I'm about to install blind footbrace studs and the jig is an awesome idea. Of course I'm here watching you build a boat instead of me out in the garage building mine, but watching these have probably saved me the equivalent time in fixing mistakes. Thank you.
Thanks Nick. Really enjoying the series. When I install my foot braces I bury and epoxy a 1/4-20 nut in a small plywood square. Kind of the female version of the studs. Then I can use a 1/4-20 machine screw to attach the braces. I’ve had to pull out a set for maintanence and it wasn’t too difficult.
A nut or a bolt, I don't think it matters much for how easy it is to reach. In this case the far end of the foot peg is just at the far end of my reach. It won't be too bad, but not as easy as a through bolt from the outside.
I like the way you mounted the rail for the foot pegs. I wonder if a small knurled knob on the forward stud might be a good idea? Without having seen the kayak in person it might make it easier to tighten/loosen the nut for servicing. I don't think they would be in the way since they're behind the footrest. Just a thought.

Nick you can use a release agent on the threads so the epoxy does not stick and it will clean off with acetone or MEK. Do you put Lock Tite on the nuts when you mount the footpeg rails?

Man...I’ve binge watched the whole series so far in about 3 days! Now I gotta wait! 😁 Just curious, how many days (or even hours) do you have vested in this so far? I know some episodes are multiple days, and some are just partial days.

Hi Glen, It is fairly easy to modify the length of some designs to accommodate different size paddlers. You can do that by changing the spacing between forms. I am able to completely customize any design to any size paddler, but it takes some time to do it right. Unless, you have some very specific needs and know how to gain the performance characteristics you are looking for, there is probably a design available that is already pretty close to what you need without modification.

I guess I probably could. I did lock-tide the nuts on when it came time to install.

I am able to completely customize any design to any size paddler, but it takes some time to do it right.
Unless, you have some very specific needs and know how to gain the performance characteristics you are looking for, there is probably a design available that is already pretty close to what you need without modification.

Yes, I often make kayak paddles. I think I have one video showing some of the process, but I have not done the whole project video yet.
