R.E.M. is a unique band, nobody sounds like them. The lead singer, Michael Stipe, said he wrote this song for teenagers, because they have such a high suicide rate. "everybody hurts, take comfort in your friends." He's saying they are not alone in their pain. He says "when you feel like letting go of this life, then hang on." You only hear it faintly, but he sings "you are not alone" near the end of the song.
My granddaughter had some depression...at12. I played this for her and she smiled...showed me where a friend of hers had put it on her Playlist.
This song fits Military Veterans too, with the suicide rate of them these days.
I bawled my eyes out when I first heard this song, waaaay back. This song hits deep in so many different ways for so many 💚

I'm so sorry you had to lose your granddaughter. There is no way for me to empathize with the enormity of your pain but you do have my deepest sympathy.
The pain never completely goes away but as long as you live, she lives in your heart and all other folks hearts who knew and loved her.

This song is in 6:8 time, not the usual 4:4. You count the beats like ONE two three FOUR five six. It's like 2 groups of 3. That is why, as you so quickly noticed, the 'flow' is different. Good ear.

😢This song has SAVED so many lives....including mine...in so many dark and hopeless times.💔 It has been used a lot in suicide awareness campaigns - it's heart-breaking, but somehow gives you hope? Such an important song for so many people....Everybody Hurts & some of us almost take that final step. Michael Stipe was a good friend of Kurt Cobain, and was devastated when he committed suicide just a year after this single was released. But as we know, for some people, the PAIN is just too much 🖤 R.E.M. will always be remembered for giving people this timeless saviour.
