Yea this is hamster breeding 101. I have accidental hamster babies right now that came from a rescue dwarf hamster named sass (sassafras) from an unregulated pet store that happened to be pregnant which I didn't know until after the babies were born. she was trying to escape the tiny cage she was in when bought her about a month ago. She had babies 8 days ago and I wasn't well versed on how to deal with this, so I did my research. If you feed them enough food to care for their babies, enough water, don't disturb their nesting area or handle your hamster at all while shes caring for her babies, then she won't eat them. She didn't kill a single one of the babies and now they're starting to grow fur a little bit and move around in their nesting area. I'm super excited to raise these babies, I'm glad they get to see another environment than the terrible place I purchased the mother at, they'll get a chance to grow up in spacious cages with plenty to do. It was completely unexpected but I'm glad that the mother is doing so well caring for them :)
Update, the babies are still doing well, she had 6 total lol so my wallets a little drained from the cages I've been prepping but it's worth it 100% to watch them grow up. They all have plenty of fur on them now and they're starting to get up and walk around in their own. I love these lil guys and I can't wait to start interacting with them more once it's time to do so.

we as humans put animals in unnatural environments. WE do not know what is best for them all the time. That is why we do research. Research shows, that in the wild, if a hamster smells ANY animal on its children, it will assume a predator has found her nest. She will eat them because they will die anyways and she is taking nutrients and energy back to herself and away from the predator. You have to think about it from a survival standpoint. SHE is a grown adult, she can make more of her species. It is a smart move in terms of evolution. A lot of animals are this way. Humans are different because we take a lot of time to grow and we take forever to have kids. 9 months vs 16-20 days for a hamster.

    WARNING for all hamster owners!:
Hamsters only eat their own baby's when they feel scared for example if ur scent goes onto the baby's the mother will become scared and eat her baby's since the mother thinks that's the safest way for her baby's even though she is eating them. So I suggest just don't touch the baby's at all and if the mother puts her babys somewhere for example in those tubes/tunnels for the hamsters,
Do not move the babys even if u aren't touching them ur scent will still go on them and the mother will feel scared again and eat her babys.😅
    Hope this helps!😊❤

Here are some things i have heard (i cannot 100% confirm everything):
    1. Dont touch the babies. The mother might kill them because she thinks a predator has found them and that this isnt a safe place anymore, or because they just smell different and not like her babies.
    2. Dont stress the mother. If she is stressed, she might eat her babies or just neglect them.
    3. Keep the place with the babies as quiet, dark and untouched as possible. Dont disturb them.
This will also keep the mother calm.
If its too noisy, bright or that she just thinks that this isnt a safe place, she will eat them.
    4. Its actually ok to give them more food than they usually need. The mother would need more nutrients in general because of the babies and the stress of giving birth.
But by giving more food than usual, she will have less the need of eating the weaker and smaller babies.
    5. Sometimes, it just happens.
Sometimes the baby is just weak, sick or already dead.
Its just free food for the mom.
Food that she can turn into milk for the others.
Less babies also means that she has more energy for the remaining ones.
    Thats just how nature is

They can't. The deed is done, and this usually happens when the mother has no food or you touch her babies... The only thing to do is to give the mother food, hoping it'll be attracted to that, must give Vit-B3. If you separate them, the mother won't be able to raise the baby. Therefore, the babies will die either way, and if you put them back together, the mother won't want them anymore and will let them die.

This is just a tip I know from owning rodents, but if you, like, overfill their bowl, and place it inside of the birthplace the second that the mother is done giving birth, she will most likely not eat her babies! This way, she will know she is in a safe place with enough food to eat. However, do not touch the babies. IF the mother leave them for an extended period of time, that's when I'd do something. Hope this helps!~

A mother hamster will cannibalize her pups if the litter exceeds 6. Female hamsters only have 6 nipples to nurse their babies, which is why they eat a few of the pups until there are 6 left. • @Isis1146Isis1
    @Isis1146Isis1 27 днів тому

Touching a mother hamster's babies can have several potential effects:
    1. **Stress to the Mother**: Touching the babies can stress the mother hamster, which might lead her to react aggressively or, in extreme cases, harm or eat the babies.
    2. **Rejection of the Babies**: If the mother's scent is disturbed by your touch, she might reject the babies or even eat them, as she may perceive them as foreign or contaminated.
    3. **Risk of Injury**: Handling very young babies can inadvertently cause physical harm or distress.
    4. **Health Concerns**: There's a risk of transmitting bacteria or other contaminants from your hands to the babies.
To minimize these risks, it's generally best to avoid handling the babies until they are older (usually around two weeks old) and the mother is more accustomed to human presence. If handling is necessary for any reason, do so very carefully and make sure your hands are clean.
Also, here are some other reasons the mother is eating her babies:
    1. **Stress or Environmental Factors**: High levels of stress, such as overcrowding, sudden changes in environment, or noise, can lead a mother hamster to eat her babies.
    2. **Health Issues**: If a mother hamster is ill or malnourished, she might eat her babies due to a lack of resources or to ensure that the strongest survive.
    3. **Weak or Deformed Babies**: Sometimes, a mother hamster will eat babies that are weak, deformed, or sick to prevent them from suffering and to conserve resources for the healthier offspring.
    4. **Inexperience**: A first-time mother or one who has not been properly socialized may not have the instinctual knowledge to care for her young, leading to such behaviors.
    5. **Overpopulation**: If the litter is too large, a mother might eat some of the babies to reduce the number and ensure that the remaining ones have a better chance of survival.
Providing a calm, stable environment with appropriate nutrition and ensuring that the hamster's habitat is suitable can help reduce the likelihood of such behavior. Hopefully this helped ❤

Fun fact: You don't have to shout "IT'S YOUR FAULT😭" given that a hamster can eat its babies out of stress, when there are premature or sick babies, or there are too many hamster babies. (If she has too many children, she will eat 2 or 3 to feed the others.) And here's my one just for you: If you don't know the situation, don't blame the person. And don't be so dumb.

Never had this happen, had a dozen babies all live before. You leave them the hell alone when they are tending to babies. They need darkness, quiet, overflowing food bowl, wheat germ, powdered milk, and shredded up bits of toilet. A week before birth you set the location, a couple days before you load her up on supplies and you come back a week later.

Before she had the kids she’d just starve when she wanted to eat until she got fed, obv. Like any pet. But now she can munch down lil babies. Plus, animals like these have so many babies at once that they usually kill a couple off for survival reasons, usually the weak. They ain’t cannibals.

  • @Crimson_810
    @Crimson_810 2 місяці тому

Yeah because you touched them! And that’s NOT ok here’s information you really need :
Cage size: In the US the recommended minimum amount of floorspace is 450 square inches or 2900 square centimeters. This is referring to unbroken floorspace so levels do not count toward this, neither do connecting multiple cages with tubes. The way to calculate floorspace is by measuring the width and length of the base of the cage and multiplying them together. That being said 450 square inches might be the recommended minimum but it is much better surpass that if you can. Most hamsters will require more space than this to be happy and can show signs of boredom or stress. Hamsters need horizontal space rather than vertical height. Hamsters are not natural climbers like rats, some may like climbing more than others but they are really bad at it, which is why they do not need vertical space. They have poor vision and are basically blind, what they can see is very blurry and dark which makes them terrible climbers. Some recommend dwarfs to have at least 600 square inches, male Syrians to have at least 800 square inches, and female Syrians to have at least 1000 square inches.
Bedding: The most common safe beddings include anything paper based (unscented) or aspen wood shavings. Unsafe beddings include, but not limited to, softwood shavings like pine or cedar, cotton bedding, or anything dust related. Hamsters are burrowing animals so they need a lot of bedding and bedding that will hold burrows. Paper bedding holds burrows the best, adding hay in between layers of paper bedding helps hold burrows more. The hay shouldn’t be pointy or poky where it could hurt your hamster like poke them in the eye. It’s safe if they eat it but it is not required or necessary part of their diet like a rabbit or guinea pig. There are other safe beddings/substrates but the ones mentioned are the most common. Since hamster burrow they need plenty of bedding. This means they should have at least 6 inches of bedding in some part of the cage, shooting for 8-12 inches. Some hamsters won’t burrow until there is 10 inches of bedding.
Substrates: Some other substrates that are safe for hamsters are soil (nothing with added chemicals such as fertilizers), sand (nothing dust related or added calcium or dyes, children’s play sand is a common type people use), and coconut fiber (choir). Hamsters have very sensitive respiratory systems so anything dusty can cause irritation and possibly infection. ErinsAnimals and HoppingHammy have many videos on UA-cam about different types of substrates in their cages.
Wheel size: Hamster wheels are necessary for a hamster, it allows them to let out their energy as they can run many miles in the wild and needs to be properly sized. A wheel that is too small will cause a curvature in the hamster’s back causing back problems. Unsafe wheels include metal or metal meshed wheels. Hamsters have very sensitive foot pads and can be easily irritated by continuously walking over a surface that is not solid, this can cause bumble foot. Their legs and feet can get caught in between the metal bars or mesh causing them to injure themselves and possible broken bones. On a side note, hamster balls are also unsafe for a variety of reasons. They do not allow for enough ventilation and hamsters cannot see where they are going and are not able to stop themselves unless they run into an object that stops them, it can be stressful and scary for them, and their toes can get caught in the ventilation holes causing injury. Hamster wheels should have a solid running surface. Some have front coverings which are good for dwarfs to prevent them from being thrown from the wheel since they run very fast. Wheels come in various sizes and different requirements for different species. Adult Syrian hamsters will typically need an 11-12 inch wheel or 28-31 centimeters. Smaller Syrians would be able to use an 8 inch wheel (20 cm) but most will need the 11-12 inch one. Chinese hamsters need similar sized wheels as Syrians. Dwarf hamsters will typically need an 8 inch wheel, it is possible for them to have a 6.5 inch (17 centimeter) but sometimes they will need to be upgraded. As long as a hamster is able to push the wheel no size is too big. Flying saucers are also another wheel option. These will still need to be appropriately sized and can also cause a hamster’s back to be curved. 8 inches would be appropriately sized for dwarfs while 12 inches would be appropriate for a Syrian.
Food: Hamsters are omnivores so they eat a variety of food. Your hamster’s food should consist of a varied seed mix and possibly lab blocks/pellets for added proteins. Most seed mixes do not contain enough protein on their own. Generally a good guaranteed analysis is 17-19% protein, 4-7% fat, 6-15% fiber. Dwarf hamsters need more protein so something closer to 20-23%. Younger/baby hamsters also need more protein than adults. Animal protein is a good way to help boost this too. These can include mealworms, superworms, crickets, shrimp, dehydrated chicken, etc. Hamsters are also able to eat fruits and vegetables and is actually encouraged to incorporate them into your hamster’s diet. Sugars in general should be more limited just because hamsters do not need lots of sugar in their diet and can be quite unhealthy for them. Dwarfs are also more prone to diabetes. The Hamster Hideout Forum is a good resource to use, they have threads on safe and unsafe foods and commercial food brands. Food
Cleaning: Depending on the size of the enclosure it can vary when needing to do a full clean. Spot cleaning is something that should be done every few days, removing any soiled bedding. Poop is fine because once it is dry it is virtually scentless, hard pieces. Hamsters are also known to eat their own poop for nutritional value. Doing major cleans can be very stressful which is why it is recommended to keep some of your hamster’s old bedding and also not recommended to do frequently. It should not be done more than once a month (unless there is a health concern such as mites) and most times it can go a lot longer than that.
Vet: It is unnecessary and stressful to take your hamster to the vet unless there is a problem. Hamsters do not need to get spayed/neutered, vaccinations, or routine checkups. Obviously if there is a problem please take your hamster to the vet so they can get the proper treatment they deserve. Hamsters are also really good at hiding pain or illnesses because they are prey animals.
Pairs: It is not recommended to house pairs of hamsters together as it can become dangerous, add stress to your hamsters, and they can possibly hurt or kill each other. Syrian and Chinese hamsters are strictly solitary animals. Dwarfs can be successful in pairs but most likely fall out. Hamsters are not social animals and do not crave human attention or the attention of their own species, therefore they do not get lonely. Hamsters typically do not live with one another in the wild, they come together for protection or to mate. Pairs will need at least double the amount of space and double of everything so they do not become territorial or fight over items. They need to be a bonded pair, coming from the same litter (same age), same sex, and same species. Also, just because you see hamsters in the same cage in the pet store does not necessarily mean that they are litter mates. The Hamster Hideout Forum is a good resource to use, they have threads on housing pairs together and the risks involved.

This is why you DO NOT keep two or more hamsters together, NOT EVEN BABIES!! Even if they seem to get along NEVER DO THIS! The mother hamster feels as if the babies are a threat. Hamsters are very territorial, so if you have more than one hamster together, that can lead to fighting and eating each other. HAMSTERS ARE CANNIBALS!! Please do not keep any hamsters together, and seperate the babies after birth. Trust me, your hamster will not feel lonely and the babies do not need each other or their mother. If your hamster is showing signs of stress, don't give them a "friend" because that "friend" will turn into a meal!😊 instead do your research on ways to improve the hamsters habitat. ALWAYS DO RESEARCH BEFORE GETTING ANY TYPE OF ANIMAL
