After many years, I found it has higher probability to be sweet when I just pick a random one
Yep for many years I used a process for picking a watermelon and then when I met my wife she had no process and was grabbing at random and had high rates of success with finding sweet ones.
I always try to find the biggest one.😁
I've found the same to be true about women.
Ahh, the missed opportunity. All you had to do was to pick the best looking one to you -> discard until you find one that doesnt look good.
Maybe you put too much effort into finding the perfect one, so when you "gave up" with the screening process, your subconcious did that job for you and picked what seemed as the best option. Might have been random in your knowledge but instinctively chose the good ones.
Im currently at the supermarket watching this video 🤣

Actually watermelons that have seeds are the sweetest. These are usually elongated and larger then the seedless kind. The best place to find watermelon is at a local grower or farmers market.
I love the big, long watermelon with seeds best of all.....but I can't find them anymore. The last 2 melons I bought from the supermarket were not only expensive, but I had to throw them both away. They were that bad.
Charleston grey is the very best
Yes, seeded watermelons tend to be sweeter but people are lazy and don't want to deal with seeds and that's how we have seedless watermelons with no flavor. Sucks because seeded watermelons are now hard to find i'm guessing because the farmers know there is a bigger market for seedless.
@@daveheel weird. I don't think I've ever come across a seedless watermelon. Region?
does it matter ? all watermelon we buy is GMO, already altered to have more sweet content
I want to note that the most common kind of watermelon in my country (Egypt) is mainly a very dark green with little to no stripes and is still very sweet (and a lot redder than the one in the video) when you pick the right one so I wouldn't say the stripes are a thing for me but they might be for the type of watermelon in the video... the way I personally pick watermelon is to ask a trustworthy vendor at the market to pick one for me, even if they don't know you, they'd typically pick you a good one (which they surely can) to build your trust so you'd go back and buy more
Maybe I am tone deaf when I knock the melon, they all sound the same.
its a trained listening skill. knock and listen to more melons, unless the fruit seller chased u away :P

My mom was a thumper, but I never quite got it. My brother told me about the creamy yellow spot (where it sat until picked), and I have had 90% success with that alone. I saw a video last year and added one trick: look for tiny brown crystals formed on the blossom end. The more there are, the sweeter. I get my best workout at the grocery store picking up watermelon and turning them over. Even the occasional dud is salvageable chop them up and either freeze, then toss in a blender or (if you have one) put the small chunks and juice into your electric ice cream freezer. Even a less than ideal or an I-bought-too-much-fruit-to-eat-this-week watermelon is delicious when dehydrated. (The texture is a bit strange, but it’s amazing how much flavor is in even a slightly mushy pale melon!)
Watermelon lovers one other important thing is, when y’all pick a watermelon, make sure no parts of it is SOFT, I’ve just bought two 🍉 watermelons and both of them had couple soft spots, since both were the last ones, I bought them both, when I opened them, both were bad.
Once a watermelon is damaged, all the damaged areas become bad and caused the rest of the watermelon to go bad very soon
Threw both of them away and look at me came back here right away to share it with y’all lol.
I've learned to go with the one that has a bright yellow spot. Creamy pale yellow isn't quite sweet enough.
I agree to a point I been using this method for several years, one thing that needs to be corrected is on the yellow spot where it's been on the ground,I've always gone by it needs to be a dark yellow not a creamy lighter yellow,a darker yellow means it's been picked and less time off the vine,a lighter yellow means it's been off the vine longer and can be bat as sweet but everything we owe is spot on and we always pick great watermelon every year.
There are NO good watermelons in a store anymore. Years ago they tasted wonderful and the texture was so different! Anyone who had a garden knows how to pick one. Also years ago they would plug the watermelon for you to see the ripeness. I never new what the produce stands did with them when they weren’t ripe. I miss that taste and texture!
I just said that the other day. Watermelons are not the same anymore.
Definitely since the pandemic...fruit in the supermarket as a whole has been pretty sub par since the onset of the pandemic
Global warming, water shortage, pesticide everywhere, soil ain’t the same
I haven’t seen a big watermelon with black seeds in forever
This has always been a true art watermelon picking...my granny sure picked them perfect!
About 30 years ago I was watching channel 11 the victory garden The Host was talking about watermelon and I never forgot this he said the bigger the patch the longer it's sat I have used this to pick out watermelons and it's never fail me
Huh
The only different thing I do is instead of knocking it, I put it up to my ear and bongo? It should sound “like a drum”. That’s how my produce guy taught me, and it works every time.😂
Simply "pat". 🥱🥱🥱🥱
This is really the only way to really tell, slapping it and trying to hear for a reverb or that 'hollow' sound without actually putting your ear to it isn't going to make much of an impact.
@@ArcadiaP works for me lol
My Advice in how to pick certain fruits and veggies:
look for the crispy skin ones, but not too thin skin, also not too thick skin, avoid the ones that are limp and 'soggy' like soggy apples. Those are overripe and with water only cuz the old age of the melon forced it to use up all the sugar to stay alive longer from aging. Leaving a very bland taste with very little flavor taste even if the smelled aroma is rich.
And yes farmer's market gives a good chance to find more naturally grown foods that tastes better and are of better food quality.
When tapping/patting watermelons, never go for the deep/low tone sounding ones, go for a slightly higher pitch/tone or in the middle. If it sounds like the G string of a violin or a bass tone in music, avoid it. Too ripe and watery and no sugar. You'll notice the melons that are literally just dark green all over may be heavier due to having too much water.
at some point you will be able to tell apart the young and crispy and the old ones, and will be able to tell freshness of fruits and vegetables if you shop enough and actually pay attention.
For corn, look for dull color, solid yellow means its too old, make sure the light gleams off of it so the skin should be shiny
in general look for fruit or veggies that have a 'shine' reflected on their skin, showing freshness and good health of skin and no loss of color or skin health.
This is applied to eggplants as well. Never buy eggplants that are too soft either, same goes for cucumbers. Always go for firmness of food which indicates their health/freshness
For asparagus, dont go for ones with white on the tips. Never go for thick asparagus. Always go for the thinner ones, they are more tender and fresh like young bamboo shoots.
For carrots, if you like sweet and slightly juicy and flavorful DELICIOUS carrots, baby carrots are never a good choice, and avoid carrots that are too big, go for medium sized long carrots.
For apples, try to go for farm/rough skinned apples, waxed skin apples don't taste as good
Cauliflower and Broccoli:
avoid both kinds if they have black on them even the slightest if you want most fresh. You can look between/inside the head of the brocolli to see how far the green has developed. Always go for deep grey/blue green top/head area for brocolli, never light green because its closer to yellow and its not ripe enough.
A lot of how I pick fresh produce is from the wisdom from mainly the women in my family, my mom and gran, and borrowed 'some' from dad and gramps as cross-reference to find see both left/right extremes on the balance scale or peripheral vision, and narrow it down to the perfect middle.
Picking the right eggs that are organic or from pasture raised chickens also makes a big difference. There are eggs that have a slight 'greenish' layer on the outside of its yolk if you boil them. Organic eggs that come from cage free/pasture raised chickens have yolks that have less or lack the green layer, and usually has slightly or much richer yellow yolk you see when you boil it.
No time to read it all right now, but the green around the hard boiled egg yoke is from overcooking it.
I’m in produce at a grocery store. Slapping the water melon is the best way. The higher the pitch the more firm the water melon is, and the less ripe it is. As watermelons ripen they become less firm inside which produces a lower thump sound. It needs to sound almost like your belly when you thump it or like a drum. When the thump sound is flat and lifeless it means the water content is low and its mushy/grainy inside. Also check firmness. You can still get great water melons that are firm. I actually tell people not to get the ones you can push the rind in. The more you can push the rind in the more chances it can be mushy inside. Yes they can still be sweet and taste fine, but you are risking getting one that has a bad aftertaste.
Great watermelon picking directions. Much needed and appreciated. Thank you.♥️♥️♥️♥️
Awesome! Time to brag my mum to go to the store to get some good watermelon and stand there for 30 minutes picking a good one. This helped *a lot* :D ❤️
Perfect video. I could get what you try to say even without listening to audio. Your textural descriptions were on point. Great job!
every asian dude would tell you to slap it and hear if the sound inside reverberates
p.s. whether a watermelon is round or elongated sometimes depends on its species. some species are round, some are long
same goes for no stripes, there are some types that are uniform in color and nothing wrong with it.
ok
I don't even remember when last time I saw a yellow-brown stem on watermelons. All of the stems are green nowadays.
Cause they pick it early and they "mature" in transport. They do it with every fruit that's imported.
@@vashstampede8523 Do you REALLY think I didn't know that?.....
@@yelena3044 You didn't know that, don't pretend you did.
@@ass2mouthallday IDK, they seem like they knew.
Im sry but thats wrong green stem means that watermelon is fresh...
Steps to pick the best watermelon:
1 - make sure there is a strong and consistent stripe pattern with dark green and pale creamy yellow.
2 - look for the pale creamy yellow spot on the watermelon, this should be large and the bigger the better. Make sure it’s a creamy pale yellow.
3 - look for a yellow brown stem, if the stem is green, it was not ripened on the vine and will not be as sweet.
4 - knock on the watermelon, you want a deep hollow sound. Emphasis on HOLLOW!
5 - look for “dry weathering spots” on the melon, this means it will be extra sweet
6 - when you lift the melon, it should feel much heavier than it looks.
7 - the outside should have a little bit of give to the melon, if it is too tough, it won’t taste as good.
8 - rounder melons taste sweeter.
It becomes a refreshing blended smoothie if we pick one that is not too sweet.
This is 10 mins standing at the watermelon box banging on all of them.
The old school thumbing hollow sound never fails..🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉
It seems watermelon with black seeds is a rare thing these days. I much prefer the old school watermelon with seeds because it taste better and better texture and it’s probably not genetically engineered.

Mom: arrives home with perfect watermelon, but with green stem
Me: tosses it off
@My Channel no wonder EU kicked you out
They perfect watermelon is the one I pick from my garden all summer long. Beats store bought every time.
store bought are gmo & nasty
The real trick to watermelon choosing
1) yes it needs to be round but it has to be bulging out
2) bulging out is not guarantee it's the sweetest, find thin skin layer and make sure its young, not thick
3) never . ever. go for the ones that are too low tone/pitch when you flick/tap/slap the melon skin. Avoid the ones that are 'too' heavy
4) if you aren't sure if its too ripe but its too big and heavy, you need to feel and weight it in your hands. The skin needs to be dry as mentioned around 1:30 of the vid
5) stripes is a must and yes, the yellow helps, but that's not guaranteed, every damn melon in the box has stripes and a bit of yellow, you have to use the steps above to pick the right one, not by color, just avoid the all dark green ones unless they're all dark green or you're in china. They're ALWAYS sweet because they never been tampered with in their breeding and raising, at least not as much as in the west
6) You need to feel and/or detect the 'freshness' of the melon and this comes with trial and error. I found my 'happy medium' in melon age and my accuracy is 80-90%. 4 out of 5 melons I choose are always better than the ones my other family members choose, and are sweeter
7) the color of the melon: Yes, deep red is good, but that means nothing. Because melons may have deep aroma you can smell but the taste is bland because all the sugar is gone or its underdeveloped and RIPPED OUT OF THE GROUND TOO EARLY LIKE SO MANY OTHER PRODUCE IN GROCERY
This is how you know foods we eat are GMO. They are given growth hormones and picked too early so they can age after they're picked and shipped to groceries across the country. Bananas are great examples of this.
In the 90s, I never seen bananas ripen and blacken/brown so damn fast, it took at least 3-5 days before an already solid banana would go brown so fast, in fact the browning rate was much slower.
Here is another blessing aside from my list of advice/tips on how to choose for various fruits/veggies in another comment, here's another good tip for you
1) ALWAYS BUY BANANAS FROM THE BRAND CALLED DOLE
2) support festival foods the grocery store because the staff treats you well and the place is organized extremely well and the food are extremely fresh.
3) if you like fried chicken buy festival foods' roasted chicken, the skin is crispy. Stop eating the massive layer of breading from KFC that you dont need to eat and is unhealthy for you.
I gotta slap the melons and feel the vibration. I can tell how it's gonna taste like and texture, if one's sandy, dense, more juice, less juice, or unripe soggy. I have never been wrong. But I do pick up the dark green with lighter strips first. Hardest part is when the whole batch is mediocre, and I'm just trying to find the least bad one.
What fantastic advice! My hubby and I were almost over it! After this vid today, we got a delicious and sweet watermelon! Thank you so much!
Thank you . Grateful for your expertise
As someone who lives in Turkey im suprised that a seedless watermelon is considered perfect, like literally all melons here have seeds are fresh from farmers market-
6/22/21: aaahhh....my favorite summer food!
In good ol' Alabam (that's Southern for Alabama), we learned that a watermelon can have one of three distinct sounds when tapped: stomach, chest, and head. A stomach sound means overripe or thickened rind; head means under-ripe; chest means just right!
Interesting analogy! I like that better than when people say a "hollow" sound, cause to me, when I hear the word "hollow", I think "empty." But I think the sound of a good watermelon should be crisp and resonant, like the "chest" you were referring to. Also, I pat the watermelon with a full hand, not just fingers or knuckles.
I like that.thank you.

Your right about the round ones being sweeter. I love watermelon ice cold from the fridge, my dog likes it too!! One of the best things about summer fruits!
I was told the round ones are female and the elongated ones are male.
The pale patch, the brown stem & the thump are correct indicators of ripeness.
But the shape and rind colour/pattern are dependent on what variety it is.
Agreed, I've had solid dark green ones before that were amazing. The weight is very important also though. Should be heavier than normal for it's size.
@@garyco766 Oh yes! A hollow thump must be on a heavy melon! If it's hollow sounding but a lightweight, you've got yourself that nasty empty-in-the-middle grainy melon.

I love how big of a commitment chosing a watermelon is because if you make a bad decision, you have to suffer for the next several days as it is consumed slowly and painfully rather than a small fruit, closer to a serving. Also, I have chosen watermelons for several strangers and can pick a decent one with about 75% accuracy. I'm definitely not an expert but I can say that sound is key when choosing. Upon slapping the melon rather than knocking on it, a more harmonic/ ringing sound is preffered over a flat/ damp sound.
How do you know you have a 75 percent success rate picking for strangers ? Do you exchange numbers for them to call you and tell you if it was good or not ? You big bullshitter you 🤣😂

You didn’t mention the white webbing or large scarring that indicates the sweetest. Also I’ve never had a round seedless watermelon that even comes close to an elongated seeded watermelon. I’ve had lots of watermelon in my day and I only love it sweet as can be.
Totally agree. The seedless varieties are getting better but they still do not have the flavor of the older varieties of seeded fruits. I'll take an heirloom variety any day
Thank you 😊 great tutorial 👍
Thank you for your tips. Mom wanted some. 😃 😊
I also look for the bee "kisses" or bee sting markings. They know what's sweet.
Huh?
Please elaborate
How do u find that...do tell?
Just look for the small brown spots on the watermelon. Sometimes they're in a straight line. Other times the spots are random. They're created by the bees searching for the sweet nectar and usually indicate this melon is sweet.
I agree. Make sure it isn’t ‘skid’ marks. Bee kisses looks like little holes in lines or in splotches. Find one with a lot? Buy it. Will be ripe and sweet every time. I never could tell by knocking.
You can be 100% sure that the marks are not made by bees gnawing at or stinging the melon. Bees die after they use their stinger. They don't eat watermelons either. They eat pollen and nectar from flowers.
I want him to pick my watermelon cuz I suck at picking the right one.
I want the same... But maybe now I learned something
Thank you for the tips 😀❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Just had some, now I want more!
"How to pick the perfect watermelon"
It's simple, import Iraqi watermelon. Tastes like honey.
true ❤️😋
you have to get the pickers to pick them when they are ripe
I rate this video 10/10. Excellent tips and the music is fantastic!
I miss those old watermelon popsicles with the candy chocolate seeds in them.
Check brookshires/super 1 in your area they still have them!
@@rachelr3230 Thanks! I'll check it out.
this video forgot to mention one of the most important things to look for, the bee pollination marks, often called "webbing" which make the melon super sweet.
What does bee pollination marks look like on a watermelon?
@@sisterwoman9274 I think it's those teeny tiny holes around the stem--that's what people told me when I was trying to pick watermelons out.
But it did mention it...see 1:35. They just didn't call it bee pollination marks
Pollination doesn't leave a mark and bees don't pollinate watermelons. They pollinate the plant that grows the melons.
