Watch Wyomia Tyus as she becomes the first women to retain the Olympic 100m title, winning gold at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games - Classic Highlights.
Prior to arriving at the Mexico 1968 Games, American sprinter Wyomia Tyus had become Olympic champion for the first time at the Tokyo Games four years earlier.
Although her position as the current Olympic champion - and record holder - made her one of the favourites to win the race, no woman had ever retained a 100 metres title in the Olympic Games up to that point.
With a new Olympic and world record of 11.0 seconds, Wyomia Tyus was once again the fastest woman alive, becoming the first woman ever to retain the 100m crown.

Wyomia was one of the great sprinters from Tennessee State. She set quite a few world records and won several national sprint titles. I happen to be a huge fan and have been for quite some time.

Ms Tyus is from Griffin, GA, 30 miles south of Atlanta.
She was so conspicuously absent from the group of former Olympic athletes who were present to be honored at the beginning of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. She was not given the courtesy of having her name mentioned. Outrageous!
    Her Medals for the US:
    Gold: 100 meters 1964 Olympics
    Gold: 100 meters 1968 Olympics
Gold: 4x100 meter relay 1968 Olympics
Gold: 200 meters 1967 Pan American Games
Silver: 4x200 meter relay 1964 Olympics

The tall woman in Lane 7, who winds up winning the bronze in this race, is Irena Szewinska from Poland. She had an even more impressive finish in the 200m race in the 1968 Olympics, where she finished first with a time of 22.5 sec. Irena is the only sprinter, male or female, to hold the world record in the 100m, 200m and 400m. That's impressive.

Re. the obvious false start by Bailes in Lane 4 ... I'm pretty convinced that what we are looking at in this video is actually two different events spliced together. When the runners are shown in the starting blocks and up to 0.08 second point of this video is, I believe, the start where Bailes is called for a false start. I just read where Tyus stated that there were two false starts leading up to the actual race. First, Bailes false started. After they got everyone back in the blocks, Ferrell (who was known for her great starts) also false started. So Tyus felt that she now had the advantage because she felt both of her main competitors (Bailes, Ferrell) would have to wait in the blocks and not risk a 2nd false start (Note the rules for getting disqualified were different back in '68. You were allowed one false start but got dq'd after a second false start).
So I think up to 0.08 seconds of this video, we're looking at the start where Bailes false started. After 0.08, we're looking at the actual 100m finals. It seems obvious now because at 0:09, Bailes is already behind the other runners which wouldn't make any sense given the start we see at 0:08.
Beginning at 0:35, we're seeing the 100m finals event as it actually happened, i.e., not the start where Bailes is charged with the false start.

The woman in lane 1 is Chi Cheng (sometimes Cheung). She was one of the greatest female sprinter of the 1968 era. She won a bronze in the 80m hurdles. She held many world records during her prime. From the looks of the ace bandages, it looks like she may have been running this race in not top condition.

    3. Irena SZEWINSKA POL 11.19

    • @ddenuci
      @ddenuci 3 роки тому +1

@@evacookie913 Correct. It's the runner in Lane 4. The funny thing is that she (Bailes) is already behind the pack within the first 10 meters. So the false start did not seem to help her. In the first round of the 100m, three Americans (Tyus, Bailes, Ferrell) equalled the Olympic record of 11.2. Not surprisingly, that group (along with Netter) won the 4x100m in these Olympics.
BTW, Bailes is only 17 at the time of this race, and in high school. She got pregnant within a year, and never raced again. She might have won the gold in the Olympics (she had finished second in the 100m to Tyus and first in the 200m at the US Trials, and had defeated Tyus at an AAU event the week before the Trials), but had been recovering from pneumonia, which she contracted while staying at the Olympic village.
How good was she as a high school sprinter? Her time (11.3) in the 100m is still tops all-time in Oregon girls high school. Still the fastest time 53 years later! And the same for her 200m time (22.95).

It was a false start allright by Margaret Bailes from the USA in lane 4, who finished 5th, so no harm done for any medal position. But it was outrageous indeed to ignore Wyomia Tyus during celebration time at the Olympics in 1996 in Atlanta, a city not more than 30 miles from her home town, for crying out loud! She belonged there, for she was one of the greatest female athletes in the entire history of her sport. By the way: i didn't see any bearfooted athlete either, and I looked very, very closely on large sceen modus. And, Rafa AMARILLAS, if you want to see that Raelene Boyle had spikes on, look at the start, she sits in lane 7 wearing start number 107, can you the spikes now?

She had a very strong finish. There's a youtube video of the 200m finals from this 1968 Olympics. Coming off the turn, she looks to be in about 7th place. But she catches everyone, and finishes first. As in the 100M finals, she catches up to Jaelene Boyle very close to the tape. So Irena gets the gold and 17 year old Boyle the silver.

No false start? That could have impacted everyone else’s race

it is bad editing - they were recalled for a false start - this film has spliced the false start with the actual race (look where lane 4 is when the camera angle changes - suddenly she is behind lane 3)

bad editing - the false start (recalled) and the actual race have somehow been edited together to make this film.

it was actually a false start by lane 4 surely? just as well it didn't matter regarding the medals.

actually on the thread it is explained - bad editing - they were recalled but this film splices the false start with the actual race (look how lane 4 is suddenly back a bit).

Did you see the false start in this ran. Margaret Bailes from the United States false started and no one called them to start to race again. Second place Barbara Ferrell had to chase her down to capture the silver and Wyomia Tyus capture the gold. I believe it would have been a different race because Barbara Ferrell won all her preliminary heats, the outcome would have been different. I'm not saying Wyomia Tyus didn't deserve to win, however, a false start in the Olympics never heard or seen such thing until now.
