The 2nd loss was from a VERY recent change in the rules, he let go of a break obviously that was a mistake but the judges deamed it that Gardner broke the break.. he didn't... either way it should have been a draw... but what ever this guy was easily the best of all time

“Men like him are born every thousand years.” Sums Karelin up perfectly. Imagine if this beast competed in UFC 1, I don’t think Royce would have been able to submit that bear. Karelin would have suplexed everyone... Tank, Severn, Shamrock...

UFC 1 was a gracie show to prove how good jiu jitsu worked. Chances are Royce would have won because Karelin would be confused by what Royce was doing. Ground fighting to those who never seen it even a blue belt average man can kill a bear of a man they call it drowning lions in the ocean for a reason.

pro boxing bouts in modern era are so carefully curated they are barely worth anything at all. Promoters very carefully choose matchups and a boxer fights only 1-2 times per year.
Pro boxers also get to win multiple championship belts and hold onto them just by beating one person.
in "amateur" sport an athlete must be continually competing every season, participating in your tournaments where they compete against multiple opponents in the same day.
If at any point they miss competition, their whole season dies there and then.
I like boxing, but wrestling of all kinds is way more demanding physically and mentally.
You have to remain offensive and active or you immediately lose. So you are in full contact with a dynamic moving weight in the most awkward shape fighting against you for several minutes straight. It's brutal. And there is zero financial reward which makes it more hardcore.
If you have ever wrestled, especially freestyle, it feels like you are getting mauled by lions or crocodiles. It's a very intense feeling and incredibly satisfying when you become that lion or crocodile.
