I misread the title as saying "The Potential of Terraria's Writing" and was expecting a completely different video, but I can't say I'm disappointed. I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm interested already.
My first attempt at terraria wiring was a blood moon lockdown button that barred the entrances to my prison base, and cycled lava on over it to keep mobs away. Now I just build my bases like 10 tiles off the ground. Keeps mobs and wraiths out.
Wiring is fun as heck and can actually be used for a lot of practical applications like mob switches, faster farms, boss cheese machines/ invincibility machines. Love the video and keep wiring dude!
building in terraria in general is so underrated, the shapes are limited but you have so much more color and texture compared to minecraft this makes building more constrained but it also makes it fun and challenging
I spent like 3 platinum on wire once to run a teleporter from base to the dungeon in the first play through with my kids, as we were all having a hard time with the cultists and needed that nurse heal, not the most practical but hey, nurse stayed safe
Have you looked into T-Mec? They’re a dead terraria group that seriously broke barriers with wiring, computers, auto boss fights, clocks, airlocks etc. very cool stuff.
You can use paint to help hide switches, buttons, and teleporters too. I like to make doors that look like old games you have to press "up" on to go through, to take players to a new room. On xbox, I would set up for example a wall, paint it black and put a nice looking little door frame to it, when player would teleport, it would take them somewhere in the house, (normally a room I have set somewhere underground, with surrounding area painted black to look like a single room like a bathroom). Or if I want to make a world feel 3D or flipped, I will do the same thing, and have you instead go to a duplicate of the house mirrored to look like you went to the otherside. Painting is a powerful tool for engineering. Either way, you did some cool stuff, and I hope it inspires other players to take a bit of time to learn and play with it.
That "activate plantera with wiring" is useful in hardcore, so that you don't risk your life gettng chased to your arena or making a new one every time you want to fight her
The airlock was actually super sick and just gave me an idea for a build, one recommendation i would make tho (and I’m gonna apply) is using grates under where the airlock is so water doesn’t fill the base bit by bit, make the water go under the airlock room so it stays dry
I usually use wiring to make an area off to the side of main base where no enemies can spawn, but I can flip various levers and switches to essentially turn on mob spawns on one side or the other (or both, which is default, when I'm not using it). And when the mobs DO spawn, they are led into a nice little lava-layer trap, so it's also a mob farm. Can't quite AFK Solar Eclipses once Mothron can spawn, and if I do it wrong Wraiths can get in. But it works for my purposes. And if ever I don't feel like dealing with the blood moon enemies, I can just 'turn off' spawns, and wait it out. Though... That part isn't as necessary, now that Sundials and Moonsdials are a thing, and reset when either of those events kicks in.
It's not that you can't make stuff with potential, but the more complicated it is the worse the game's engine handles it. For instance for each wire you put down the engine checks all 4 possible connection points it has. In other words, instead of them making a secondary array that verified where the wire was connected to (in the initial wire placing array) it just checks all the possible spots EVERY time it refreshes the clock - that makes it do 4 times more work for each single wire you place. 1 wire =x4 2,x8 3,x16 4,x32 5,x64 6,x128 7,x256, 8,x512 9,x1024 10,x2048, 11,x4096 12,x8192. After only 16 wires it's doing 131,072 extra calculations per cycle. After only 19, it's 1,048,576. After 29 it breaks over 1 BILLION USELESS OPERATIONS (1,073,741,824 to be exact) when if they'd written the engine mathematically it would use just 58 to do the same function. Yes the game does do a great job handling all that extra crap it's doing, well- but the point is it shouldn't need to- especially with how long the game's been out. (as an example Starbound's wiring system handles it properly. That said starbound's base game performance itself could be improved a good bit. That- terraria actually does well) If you had actually bothered to watch From Scratch's vid you'd know that, & also about the mod he wrote that eliminates that issue all together. (As reported by ThePrimeTime, From Scratch also got 3 real world job offers because of it.) Sounds to me like what he made in terraria has more potential than anything you've ever done- in both terraria & RL.
I was going to comment something along the lines of "Terarria can make more computers easier but not much else, and Minecraft's can actually be useful" but like... these are actually SICK I may or may not build the Human Extractinator for my next calamity playthrough because being able to have on demand nurse anywhere in an arena is great
first the snow gear vid, then enemy ai and now this im so glad youtube algorithm has been blessing your channel and keeps you on my feed, throughly earned a sub, hope to see you grow definitely deserve it :)
The more spaced out the hoiks are, they faster they'll travel, so I don't know if you could have spaced them out more, but it would be more efficient if you could
When I used to play the xbox 360 version of terraria, I tried moving water from the ocean to spawn, and it crashed my game. I think that was my last time using wiring to this day.
The bug diff between terraria and minecraft is there is a clear end to every terraria world where minecraft is a sandbox with optional quests. In minecraft it can be tedious and sometimes hard to get certain materials so farms are nessesary to get massive amounts of things like iron. If you’re a builder you might need chests on chests of materials! In terraria farms are mostly targeted to progression so mob farms and if you build traps for bosses people consider that cheating the game and the experience which I would agree with even though those insta kill boss traps are sick! Also with terraria being a 2D game the complexity of farms is limited since most pathing and spawning is simply around the player. To go back to building when you reach end game there are tools available that allow you to collect materials extremely quickly and most people don’t need a lot of materials when building and even then there aren’t many farms to get unique nice looking building materials. If there was a way to automate tree planting then you could make a tree farm but that’s not the focus of terraria so they never added that feature. What they do have is cool and you can do awesome stuff with it but I don’t think there will be a time where people are making contraptions to farm building blocks.
A little trick, but the logic lamps can be used as one way gates. You can use an and gate woth 2 logic lamps on top. The bottom one is a buffer, and the top one causes the lamp to send a pulse when it is toggled
With the item elevator you can make it a lot simpler, you don’t have to actuate the whole thing with all the half and half switching. All you need to do is actuate the blocks the items run into, once they are in the hoik blocks they’ll travel up on their own, no need for actuators etc
I know this video is a bit old, but I kind of did the same with hallowed stone in a farm with a 5 second timer and actuators just to farm crystal shards and gelatin crystals. Though had no idea that you could make a vertical elevator. I just had the conveyors move stuff to my safety box that I'd go to once in awhile.
one time i came up with a concept for a moon lord farm. first it brings you to the lunatic cultist where it will automatically summon the cultist and then automatically kill it without you dying. Then it brings you to the towers and somehow does something to make sure you dont die. not sure how to do that. after all that, moon lord spawns and you automatically kill it. super hard farm to make, and im not even sure if it is possible.
there is a caveat to the automated life fruit bit. plantera's bulb wont spawn plantera if there's no player in its vicinity, idk how close exactly the vicinity is, but if you just go check on it midday or midnight when it wont shift for another couple minutes, then you're fine. alternatively set it up on a switch thats far enough away from the farm itself and then just toggle it on and off when its ready and you should be safe, unless they changed that post 1.4.4
