Maggie Smith - the name alone invokes an enormous talent. I have been a long time fan of hers and do not miss anything she does. I had the good fortune of seeing her perform at Stratford (Ont) four years in a row in the mid 70s and do effortless Shakespearean comedies with impeccable timing and humour as well as dramas with equal fervor under the direction of Robin Phillips ... what a treasure she is to the theater and cinema. I am so looking forward to catching her as well as other dames as Joan Plowright, Judi Dench & Eileen Atkins, all of whom I am also a fan, in the new documentary 'Tea with the Dames' coming Sept. 21st. Dame Maggie has an enormous list of credits and Downton and Harry Potter series are only the more reknown vehicles for which she's more famous ... I urge those who are fans to view the section on Maggie Smith deliver some biting comments and quotes from Downton Abbey dvd collection, they are hilarious ie., "What's a weekend?"

I read that Fellows had an aficionado to ensure that all history was correct, but I saw one thing that I don't was right. When the American mother was eating, she ate with the fork upside down as the British still do. I was in England for a while and learned that they still eat by pushing the food onto the back side of the fork and placing it into the mouth upside down. Americans eat with the fork right side up. I love the show and have the complete series on dvd. I have watched it about 3 times now. The series can be found at the libraries to borrow.

Sadly I stopped watching after Mathew died. I hated that he wanted a baby so bad and on the day of his kids birth he dies. 🤦♀️It was only six season long I wish the actor would have completed the series 🤷♀️
I love a bunch of British shows. I get their humor. I get some of their references. For drama I like their period peices, but I really love their mysteries especially the ones taken from older British mystery writers who really knew how to thrill you. But yes Maggie Smith's character was done perfectly, well worth many awards.

Too bad The List didn't get the time period correct - Downton Abbey began during the Edwardian period, and the social and economic changes brought by World War I through to the 1920's were major themes in the show's plot and character development.

I was a little surprised that an American show was not an influence on "Downton Abbey". Here in the U.S. in the mid-70's there was the critically acclaimed "Beacon Hill" about a wealthy family in Boston in the 1920's. Excellent as the show was it didn't catch on with the viewing public and last maybe one or two seasons.

that is beacuse the dog in the first season is Pharaoh and the dog in the second series is Isis, they are not the same :-)

All the actors are perfect for their roles. I am glad they passed on the other actors.
Sadly I stopped watching after Mathew died. I hated that he wanted a baby so bad and on the day of his kids birth he dies. 🤦♀️It was only six season long I wish the actor would have completed the series 🤷♀️
I love a bunch of British shows. I get their humor. I get some of their references. For drama I like their period peices, but I really love their mysteries especially the ones taken from older British mystery writers who really knew how to thrill you. But yes Maggie Smith's character was done perfectly, well worth many awards.

Does this narrator ever take a breath?! After three minutes I wanted to scream at her to SHUT THE HELL UP, but since this a one way communication, that won't do any good. I just instead cut watching short. Maybe I should watch it at slow speed?

The untold truth is that this Downton Abbey is really just a remake of the 70s show Upstairs, Downstairs.
I love both series (have them on DVD and Bluray) but prefer DA.

No wonder I went off Downtown Abbey, “Fellows was Influenced by American TV” well it shows. British TV programmes should just be that BRITISH!
Too bad The List didn't get the time period correct - Downton Abbey began during the Edwardian period, and the social and economic changes brought by World War I through to the 1920's were major themes in the show's plot and character development.
King Edward died in 1910. The show picks up in 1912. But You are right that King George did not out his person stamp on society until after the War.

Fact check, fact check, fact check! “Upstairs, Downstairs” preceded them all. Mind you, talking about family drama, let’s not forget “Hamlet” and “Macbeth”, these played in London before Broadway ever existed.
I was a little surprised that an American show was not an influence on "Downton Abbey". Here in the U.S. in the mid-70's there was the critically acclaimed "Beacon Hill" about a wealthy family in Boston in the 1920's. Excellent as the show was it didn't catch on with the viewing public and last maybe one or two seasons.

I think it's funny that you desperately try to make it sound like Downtown Abbey style format was basically an american idea, with the interlacing of similtaneous storylines from different characters at the same time. Hmmm..... obviously never watched any British soaps/Series... EVER. Coronation Street, Eastenders, Brookside. Yes, he may have mentioned he liked those US series, but i think this is stretching it a little.
