Interesting you should say that. My van is 3 years old and starting to cost me big $ like dual mass flywheel etc.{110.000km]. Im going to sell it when its fixed. PROBLEM is what to replace with. I dont trust any manufacteuer and there bullshit warranties.
I've just had a 1 hour test driver of the 'NEW' Transit custom, Australian customer. Overall? I am disappointed. I praised the last model, and hoped this one would solve the few issues. For Euro readers, we only get basically 2 trim levels, the 'Van' and the Sport. Both are high specced compared to what you would get in Europe. This is to minimise the stock that needs to be catered for in a relatively small market. Some of my notes may only be relevant to the local market. The Good: - Drivers seat is much improved, the old one was garbage, the new one just feels supportive. It is also lower to the floor. and feels more car rather than van like. - Barn doors now do not have protruding. - The stupid half glass side windows have been replaced with a full window. - Roof height lowered to help fit into low car parks, this is great, but obviously the internal height has also reduced. I suspect this is also because of the AWD option available in Europe. - Column mounted auto selector save space. - LED headlights standard (new) - Keyless Start Standard (new) - Automatic climate control standard (new) The Bad:, the list is long. - The instrument cluster is complicated looking and hard to read, its angle isn't towards the driver, its pointed down in comparison to your eyes. - Square steering wheel, like all square steering wheels is shit. - Brake pedal way so spongee and soft, I guess that could have been this particular vehicle. - Van has keyless push button start but NO buttons on any of the external door handles. You have to pull out the fob to lock and unlock. Absolute insanity. That was one feature I was looking forward to. Having you hands full of crap and needing to dig into a pocket isn't good. - Flip up roof racks were standard in the Australian delivered cars all the way back to 2015, now you have to pay $2000! - I was told no rear lift gate option until the MY24 models. This has always been a popular option in Australia for trades vans, keeps the sun and rain off. whist working in the back. Out vans are always glazed in the rear too, so gives better rear viability. - Dual sliding doors is an option. Again, many other competitors don't even offer one door, another $1000 option. - Has plastic wheel caps rather than silver steel wheels. These are work vehicles. Silver steel wheels just work, they tried this before with one model year of the previous gen and soon switched back. - Driving position HAS improved from last gen, but its not SUV good like a Toyota Hi-Ace or Hyundai Staria. The steering wheel reach doesn't come close enough either. - Passenger seat still sucks. Its a van seat. Competitors have a full bucket just like the driver. Some of us actually drive long distances with a passenger. - Pressing the park button in the auto DOESN"T engage the electronic hand brake, its another button to press right in the middle of the dash! Why would you have the van in park and the park brake off? When selecting drive, it will release the park brake, but its hesitant to do so. - Just doesn't drive as nice as the previous model. The last model actually had alive steering for a commercial vehicle, this feels like a computer game. - The thing as a whole doesn't feel as solid or well made as the last one, doors feel tinny. Other notes, - No more manual option for the Australian market, and this engine just doesn't have the right feel for an auto, and we get the the 2nd most powerful engine spec. - No AWD option for Australia, sure it doesn't snow much, but driving off road for building sites and maintenance is common place. I have waited a long time for this, I am not impressed Ford.
Our company have had 1 just over a month and it’s decently good except things reset every time. Although when on a journey the maps will loose signal and takes ages to get that signal back.
I don't really like how almost everything is controlled through the computer screen. It means that you have to stop, in order to change settings. There's something to be said for keeping a lot of things as simple physical switches or controls, especially when you're focus should be on the road.
I liked the operation of the controls but I agree. My 2020 Custom screen sometimes freezes so that would leave you without any climate control. It could be a big problem. Mark.
Drove one for the first time today as they're newly added to the company fleet. Very unimpressed. I thought Mercs were bad after driving them for 15 years, but the Transit is a massive downgrade in almost all areas. Really uncomfortable as a tall guy too. Feels like the seat doesn't slide back anywhere near enough. The power steering feels ancient and I noticed the brake pedal sits higher than the accelerator which took ages to get used to.
For info, I have a leased 2021 L1H1 Auto. Custom. Lease term runs to end of year and I want another custom. Or rather I did. Your video and comments certainly highlights all the negatives I have read elsewhere. The new custom is also lower, and the new step looks a pain, as to be honest the old flat floor provided a nice small working and sorting space. As someone else said, may be ok for very short delivery drivers but fail to see the need. So anyone reading this it is a bit of a dissapointment. And at a rough price of £460 for 48 months and 12 months down I am now not so sure. I may keep my current one as at 40k miles seems an option. Any owner comments on the Renault Traffic out there please ?
I see they have copied the Austin Allegro square steering wheel. I guess the designers are too young to remember how well that went down. Seems a step backward in quality with this model. They have cheaped out with no buttons for the heater controls, that would drive me mad. Also the thing about not being able to get 8x4 sheets in upright anymore, the old transits were smaller but were bigger inside.
Sadly not. Ford have to make sure the van is secure from theft but not from the theft of its contents. If you are going to keep expensive tools in the van, upgrade the security.
Had a second look at one yesterday, build quality has dropped, definitely going flimsy, the fuel tank cover hinge arrangement is definitely gonna snap off
What a bunch of negative idiotic comments Had mine almost 2 weeks now. Same as on this vid. Love it. Solid as anything and drives like a High end SUV. it’s a superb van. Love everything about it.
They are still nice to drive. Apart from a few items, I didn’t feel the quality had slipped that much. We will surely get some teething troubles as you always do with a new model. I am glad you are enjoying yours.
The only thing idiotic is you, thinking your opinion is more important than others, or it’s your first proper Van , ie not French ,either way it’s nothing special
It's just been released in Australia the problem with it though it requires ad-blue which is $2/litre and is a 20-litre tank with 70 litres of diesel. And why would you want a manual car for? if you're in it 10-12 hours a day and in traffic you don't want to be on and off the clutch all the time. People will buy this as a courier van not just tradesman.

Waiting for the next repair (new engine has thrown its drive belts) so I can get rid. Landrover defender hardtop is to be picked up on Friday. Never, Never, Never will have a Ford again
That sounds like a nightmare mate. Was the wet belt replaced before 125k? I have heard of them falling much earlier and people recommending they are changed at 90k
Question to the reviewer and anyone who owns and use this latest Transit Custom. Has anyone had issue in using Waze or Google maps via Android auto wireless? It seems to all over the place on map and can't get a stable position on my Custom. As for the touchscreen yes it will be infuriating on first use and over the top for a van, but with some patience, you get use to it. Only just.. Definitely agree on the rear door with no mechanical lock to hold the door if a crosswind hits it. A real concern.
Thanks for you questions. I cant provide an answer on the problem with android but I have had problems with Google Maps freezing on Apple Car play. It seems the software cant handle it if there is too much going on. Agree about the doors. Mark.
Feels like a step backwards not being able to stand a 8x4 up in the back - I recall Ford making a big deal about that with the mk6& mk7 transit saying they listened to trades ect. another small annoying custom feature- the rear rubber door seal being on the van as appose to to being on the rear doors like on previous transits mk7 backwards - it just catches the crap and tears loading
Any change that takes the drivers eyes off of the road ahead is a FAIL, I program safety critical applications for a living and the new setup for the buttonless dash wouldn't have left my desk. I drive a 22 Trans Custom and I can close my eyes and know where every switch or dial is located.
They probably won’t spend any money on developing new diesel engines now. They won’t be able to sell them past 2035 so will be putting all of their efforts into alternative fuels. That's if current legislation stands. 😎
My diesel engine siezed last week less than two years old. Waiting for a new engine from Ford. Could be 8-12 weeks. I want out. I’m going to buy a MAN TGE 180 4x4. The diesel is shite wet belt crap. Sorry to hear that. That’s not good news. The new VW Crafter will be based on the Transit common platform, so I wonder whether the MAN will stay independent or follow VW?
The new Crafter will stay as a VW design and build, the same as the Caddy. The Transporter and Amarok are the only disasters that Ford are getting their grubby hands on !,a decision that will come back to haunt VW.
So the new Transit connect is a VW Caddy common platform. I though that the new Crafter was going to be based on the Transit but cant find any info to support this.
Great review. I've currently got one of these on hire as someone decided to drive in to the back of my VW T6. But give me a transporter or older shape transit any day, Not a fan
@@Monty-kr7py Just seems out of place in what is a working vehicle. I wonder how much abuse it'll be able to withstand in a builders vehicle, constantly full of dust and dirt....
Are they any more difficult for thieves to get into? That’s the most important thing.Basic functionality should be on buttons and dials. I had a Renault upon which the display died, had the heating and whatnot been on that STUPID touchscreen I’d have been knackered.
Sadly not. We will be making some videos on van security soon. You do have to spend extra on van security to protect your tools and equipment. Yes the touchscreen could be an issue. Especially with the software issue we are currently seeing.
No disrespect to Ford because in general they are a very sound and solid car maker and definitely know how to advertise. But I get that Ford are trying to make the Transit much more like the VW Transporter - this is why they have asked the German company for their input. The reason for this is the popularity of the Peugeot Expert and with that you can include a) Citroen Dispatch, b) Vauxhall Vivaro and c) the Toyota Proace. But it's very much the Peugeot that are selling more than Citroen, Vauxhall or Toyota. You see the Royal Mail, Police Scotland and many others using the Peugeot Expert these days and of course Peugeot took their lead off VW when re-styling the Expert and it would seem that they have found a winner, that's why many other Van makes have followed suit.
That's a good insight, Neil. Thank you. It will be interesting to see how this sells compared to its predecessor. The last Custom outsold every other van on the market. At one point it was the best selling vehicle on the road. It is a tough act to follow.
Unless you have one you can't say that, you don't know. Every vehicle in the world is more expensive than before so that's irrelevant and you need to go for the more powerful engine, my 170 has never let me down ever in 7 years.
I think the load volume is the same, if not more. It seems all vans have a cheaper feel due to cost and weight reduction. We will have to wait and see if this one stands up to the test of time.
@@kevinhurst2527 I can say that, actually. I’ve been driving multitudes of types and sizes vans since 1997 so I think I have a pretty good idea. I have owned and operated as well as hired, borrowed, and contracted so have seen them running and broken, maintenance them myself and had them in workshops. Speaking to mechanics about the different vehicles is also a freat insight since they work on them day in, day out. The consensus is that Ford vans haven’t ’t been good since they moved production to Turkey. I’ve owned Ford before then and since and can agree. I’ve currently got a transit Custom and although I like the space and comfort of the cabin, the overall quality just isn’t there. I’ll be going back to VW next I think or else just go cheaper. I’m not a fan of overpaying for something.

@@Metal05the current 2023 Transporter has a conventional cambelt that lasts 100,000 miles without issue.
Thank you. Lets hope the new T7 is of better quality
The T7 is a rebadged transit custom that is built alongside the transit by ford. @WhiteboxUK
English version? How much? Free transportation?
I would look on UK van leasing and sales sites for a good idea of pricing.
Ahh!One of those ruddy screens plonked on top the facia!
It didn’t feel too much different from the previous model.
It’s like an iPad , total overkill for a van which should be primarily for doing some graft
@@Monty-kr7py Just seems out of place in what is a working vehicle. I wonder how much abuse it'll be able to withstand in a builders vehicle, constantly full of dust and dirt....
Look nice. Shame it comes with the same wet belt and fuel pump issues
To be seen on the back of a recovery truck near you
You would have hoped they would have solved this issue. We will wait and see.
Great Thumbnail! *Totally not made by me*
Why thank you. And thanks for the great thumbnail.
@@WhiteboxUK We should should be able to get basic things offered by the manufacturer. Those lock plates should be standard or a manufactured option.
480p???
What do you mean? 🤔
Can't believe they still got that wet timing bet
I can't imagine they will change it now as all the focus is on renewable energy
@@WhiteboxUK Save those pennies from your 1% fuel efficiency gain for when you need to replace the engine.
really also on 170nhp diesel? dont think that is wet belt no?
@@theitaliangarage defo a wet belt. Same as the last one
nice one mark 👍
Thank you mate. 💪🏻
Ford didn't ask VW for any input..It's 100% designed, engineered, and built by Ford.
Looks like a transit custom only smaller, cheaper, flimsier, same crappy engine, and more expensive. I'll pass.
He cant even get the touch screen to work when its still and he can play around with it Imagine trying to ajust everything while driving lol Just put buttons and knobs for the fans and aircon for goodness sake
Its not god is it. I can see this being very frustrating. Mark
Was the video taken on Nokia 3110? ))
It was, but we have recently upgraded to a 6600 so future videos should be of better quality.
Wet Belt jelly lock garbage
At least when it does get nicked due to the unreliability the thief wont get far
Yeh security is a big issue. I don’t think any of the manufacturers will sort this. We need to be looking at additional security to secure our livelihoods.
Still got that stupid wet belt... it’s a no from me
👍
It sounds like a big put off for so many people.
Fords solution to prolonging the wet belt is special oil and oil changes every 10,000 miles.
@@jasoneldridge4738 I was told by a Ford mechanic, that belt failures are caused by any unburnt diesel being dumped into the engine oil. (This is standard practice for modern diesel engines) The belts are designed to be proof against engine oil but unfortuanely breakdown under diesel.
Belt isn't the problem, driver error.
@@stuartcraigon2003 There is a lot a van owner can do to help the situation. Such as regular serving, including the optional interim service.
minuet 10.1
You wait until you get locked out with the key not working oh and android auto maps do not work
That could be a disaster.
Well it happened to me on my van and it happened to my colleagues van
Not if it’s got that shite engine in it.
We will be making a video on wet belts and how to avoid expensive engine damage. It is due to be released at the end of March. Stay tuned.
Computer says no ❗️
Yeh, that happens a lot with my current Custom. 😆
I will keep to my van wet belt engines are crap.
Sounds like a lot of people have had problems. I haven’t had any with mine.
My wet belt transit still on original belt 189k miles no issues.
I would look at getting that changed ASAP. For the sake of £700. it could save you £££££££
No they are not worth it ,the automatic asking to place into park when pulling up at lights
Every button switch placed on the infotainment screen what happen when screen doesn’t boot or crashes ?
Knees hitting door handle really irritating on long drive ,electronic handbrake sticking and really irritating the warnings bongs and whistles turn them off and they auto come on when engine restarts
No autogearbox selector, now fitted on a indicator stalk
Nowhere to put your sunglasses
Basically it’s no upgrade it’s backward and it ain’t cheap !
Is that enough to be getting in with
That's loads, thanks for you comment. I can tell you are not a fan. Mark.
I like the colour lol
Better getting a transporter before they turn into ford !!
I have a few customers that have done just that.
If you want a proper VW Transporter, you're to late !,they stopped taking orders for a new van last May !

The new VW is a rebadged transit custom
I am sure they will have some input into the looks
Ford charging merc prices for cheap rubbish..
With the new regulations coming in the cost of vans will continue to rise

Is it even a ford ?
Sure is. It was developed in conjunction with VW as they will be sharing the common platform.
There's virtually no VW input in this collaboration!
