What I’ve got out of it was Pink was a musician who couldn’t handle it so he hid his emotions behind the metaphorical wall and was caught himself showing emotions during the song the trial and found himself being guilty so he tore the wall, again metaphorical, down and revealed his emotions.

What I got out of it was Pink is a successful musician who despite his success has fallen victim to his "wall" a classic 'whats the point?' his mental wall between people he has built. The many 'bricks' in the wall which are the events of the movie such as school, mother, wife, father and in the end his way of 'rebelling' against his feelings is to basically fight for what his 'ideal' world would be which is 'we are all victims and we need to fight back' mostly they tend to stem toward racial or political issues (imho this is how many teenagers tend to vent their own frustrations) but then he realizes at the end he was the one to blame and in the final minutes of the film he is 'judged' by the bricks in his wall but he makes the decision to bring it down.. to move on.. to bury his guns in the ground.. to no longer blame others (being racist/political) and just accept that he is beyond his 'feelings'.. What is the main takeaway? Your feeling of your past and present at first blur who you truly believe you are. You think that your father dying in the war, your overbearing mother, your inability to open up to your wife is a fair result of your wall (the things that have happened to you) but in the end your only truly free when you can overcome the need to be behind your (personal) wall and just live life above your past, (imho a very hard task many with bad pasts will struggle to overcome) and look toward the future. (TLDR, a person who is consumed by thoughts of his past/ego and overcomes it and starts to embrace the future) Thanks to any who any read this.

I thought it was about how the Wall, Pink’s Childhood defence mechanism of distancing his problems, has corrupted him into the very things that made him build the wall (The Nazis that killed his father, The predatory lashings out of the teacher, the cleanliness obsessed and authoritarian mother. Realising what he’s become from his delusions of a Nazi persona, he calls for it all to “STOP” letting his feelings halt the natural progression of the show, leading him to put himself on trial in his mind, both to figure out if he’s guilty for showing feelings or guilty for the construction of the wall.
On the natural progression thing, Nazi Pink continuously references following and staying in order out of fear of reproductions. He represents how Pink has to accept his place and meaningful change is impossible, so why not take it out on those lesser people.

I feel like attempting to paint this as an album about antisemitism is a big stretch. A more accurate conenction would be Pink believing he's no better than the forces that took his father from him and caused him so much pain and sorrow, as well as showing the vileness and hate that's building in him as he lives in a world of sex drugs and rock n roll. Its more psychodrama than an attempt at showing that london was """racist""".

In addition to my other comment: I remember listening to The Wall when I was 12, and the album was first released. At the time, I was attending a very strict, traditional English prep school, similar to the one attended by Pink. The refrain "We don´t need no education, we don´t need no thought control" struck me as being very profound at the time, and probably helped to set me on the path to juvenile delinquency. However, when I was 24, and somehow found myself teaching in a public high school (ironically, while also playing in a rock band, and going through a nervous breakdown), it occurred to me that I had been completely wrong about that, and that kids desperately need a quality education--and great teachers to lead the way. Unfortunately, I wasn´t up to that challenge at the time, and chose to pursue my music instead. Wearing two contradictory hats at the same time was just too much psychological pressure, and I had to leave the arena for a while. I can´t help but wonder how many high school teachers find themselves in the same position...Sting, I believe, was also a teacher; that´s what inspired his great song, "Don´t Stand So Close to Me".

I'm American. I'm just now exploring the true meaning of "The Wall." Though we do need education, we don't need the type that fosters thought control and lack of creativity. I'm 65 now and didn't find the creativity. Those that break free are the exception, not the rule.

The Schoolteacher scene is more significant when you realize the schoolteacher mocks Pink's poetry and that might be the worst triggering incident of them all. This is a HORRIBLE thing to do to a young artist, it's very possible the poems were about his father and delayed his ability to process the trauma with another one on top.
I think Pink Floyd is commenting on the bleak defeatist attitude in Britain, specifically with two examples: "Mother's gonna put all her nightmares into you -" alluding to what I've heard is a pretty common negative/hopeless attitude of british mothers, and the "The boy thinks he's a poet!" scene, setting up school as something else that sucks all the joy out of things, especially art.
Great teachers are desperately needed, but the system is so fucked (in America) that they're quitting in record numbers. I stumbled upon Finland, best and most cost-effective public school system in the world... you should check it out. As a society they decided to pay public school teachers the same as doctors and lawyers, and give them the same status. They probably have the least centralized and least structured curriculum in the world, and the whole thing works supremely well.

Roger Waters' father died in 1944. In the movie and on the album the protagonist's father dies at the battle of Anzio in Italy which also happened in 1944. There is a dedication to Roger Waters father at the bottom of the album, the final cut.
There are definitely some autobiographical elements to the wall for Roger Waters as well as depictions of Syd Barrett. I believe that the fate of Syd Barrett haunts Roger Waters to this day.
By the way, this was a great background to the movie. Thank you for posting. The historical observations you made are fantastic.

You missed a lot in this review and also forgot about history. Britain stood alone in 1940 against the Germans in painful defense of her island (as Churchill would famously say) until the Americans and later the Russians came to fight the Germans later to defeat Germany by 1945. That said, the Wall (the part you blatantly missed) came down both between Communism and Western democracies as well as the continuing Cold War which arguably exhibited even more violence in the 20th Century after WWII (especially in Russia and China). Recall that Europe felt the tension of the Cold War and the risk of nuclear war. The use of the hammer was a definite reference to Russian Communism using the same methods as Nazi Germany. The endless symbols of materialism, sex, and drugs in modern life represents the endless existential isolation not just within Pink but society at large. Individuals are crushed to conform even more from every angle (family/school/relationships/work/the State) with kids turned to sausage and a plethora of scary and violent imagery. Baby Boomers, especially in Europe, were scarred from this post war experience despite the sex, drugs, and rock diversions symbolic throughout the Wall. The psychosis of Pink is a greater reference to the violence and insanity of the 20th Century in the entire world. Roger Waters wrote this partially of his experience but extrapolated the thoughts into modern existential sadness all the way to the climax trial where feelings and humanity are ignored in the final verdict of Pink (both imagery in his head but also existing in the world, highlighted by "Hey You" and "Comfortably Numb"; the show is a metaphor for one's life in society, not just a concert). That said, it is Roger's sad indictment of modern life (in his view).

An interesting commentary, tackling some of the prevalent themes in The Wall--one of the greatest rock albums of all time, also notable as the very first production to be recorded using digital technology. I was particularly struck by the clip´s emphasis on postwar antisemitism in Britain, a concept which was previously unfamiliar to me. However, I would venture to suggest that many of the most critical issues addressed by the album and film are barely touched upon by this brief, but intriguing, documentary. Yes, the historical and sociological influences and impact of The Wall were discussed in some detail--Roger Waters, along with an entire generation of stellar British rock musicians, was indeed profoundly influenced by the state of the UK after two devasting world wars in quick succession (And--just as importantly--the rising popularity among Britain´s disenfranchised youth of underground Black American blues artists, and the early years of rock ´n roll.). Many thousands of men were lost in these epic conflicts, and, after Hitler´s Blitzkrieg and the Battle of Britain, the country was left in ruins, and the population was both poor and demoralized. (As a tangential aside, it is important to note that the US mainland largely escaped the cataclysmic destruction on the other side of the planet during this period, and in many ways, even came out ahead of the rest of the world.) However, the main thrust of The Wall is undeniably psychological. The music of Pink Floyd has largely been preoccupied with exploring the causes and effects of mental illness, ever since the psychedelic self-destruction of their original singer/songwriter, Syd Barrett, in the 1960s. Roger Waters has admitted that he was particularly influenced by the then-groundbreaking theories of Scottish psychiatrist R. D. Laing, author of the seminal text, The Divided Self (Some of which, it should be acknowledged, were later discounted by Laing, as his professional perspective gradually evolved over time). Many of Laing´s theories on the genesis of mental illness are artistically dramatized in The Wall: the lack of a suitable paternal role model, the overcompensating smothering and projection of a narcissistic mother, the paralyzing mental conflicts of double-bind psychological demands and low self-esteem, the crippling effects of a strict and abusive childhood education, and the gradual development, implosion, and destruction of a false, protective sense of inner identity. Waters and Floyd also explored the psychological demands and effects of celebrity--on both talented, superstar artists, and their adoring fan base. Pink, the principal character of the film, (portrayed superbly by Bob Geldof, a talented musician in his own right, singer for the Boomtown Rats, and producer of the global Live Aid benefit concert in the 80´s) is generally accepted to be an alter ego of Waters himself. The Wall is symbolic of the sensitive soul´s psychologically suppressed true identity, and its eventual trial scene and self-destruction may also be viewed optimistically, as an opportunity for spiritual rebirth and healing. It is also interesting to note that the actual concrete wall, dividing East from West Berlin at the time, was a primary centerpiece of the Cold War conflict and animosity of this period. It may be only mere speculation to suggest a mutual influence between the Berlin Wall in Germany, and Pink Floyd´s contemporaneous concept album, The Wall; however, the Berlin Wall was finally torn down, nine years after The Wall´s release, and an actual live performance of the entire album was later staged by a sizeable gathering of individual recording artists, at the site of the Berlin Wall itself. Many keen observers of contemporary world affairs commented on the revolutionary significance of this concert, and some even believed this performance to be de facto evidence of the actual end of Cold War hostility and ideological polarity, and the beginning of sincere efforts toward the long-awaited German Reunification.

I never thought of it this way before, but it all makes sense. To me, I always thought (after watching another video about this movie and album), that it was about a wall that many of people throughout the world have mentally due to past trauma and bad experiences in life. Regardless, whatever the true meaning is, that movie beautifully depressing. What I mean is, it’s so dark and depressing (because all of us have past trauma in our lives at some point, some more than others), but at the same time, it’s so beautiful, original, and creative that someone could come up with this concept. The only other band that could remotely come close to Pink Floyd (in regards to using metaphors to describe something or illustrate a bigger picture), would be Tool. However, there will never be another concept album or movie like this ever again….. unless bands and writers start using psychedelics again.

I had thought that the album was about the Cold war and Vietnam, since the wall would have implied Berlin, and in "The Trial", you can hear 'Tear Down this Wall!' A famous line from Ronald Reagan
Plus you can hear Helicopters, Shouting, and just overall chaos
Plus 'Bring the Boys back home' also would have supported this
Plus the kids in the school sections of the album probably could have been when the teachers were shouting could have been the discrimination black people, Jewish people, or people that weren't white in the Times of the Vietnam war or cold war (probably not the latter) and the album is kind of a symbol for a descent into insanity because at the end of the album, it repeats itself and goes back to 'in the flesh?'
