Hi! I'm not in tech, but my boyfriend who is showed me this as I'm going through a rough time too. Thank you so much, finally seeing things in a different perspective rather than burning myself out with a very long to-do list. Even as an artist who recently just started a business, this resounded to me so deeply.

I've been doing the whole "what is the least demanding thing I can do right now, to progress towards one of my goals" for a while - I'll try and incorporate this idea and see how it works out for me. Great vids btw. Thank you for spending time on so many interesting topics.

holy crap the same is happening to me, or happened gladly I'm over it! I've moved for work from a third world country to EU.. first off the visa process was hell, then realocation, leaving family friends and GF back.. it was hell, the first few weeks I've cried won't lie.. I had no idea if I was good enough to stay at the job I got, (junior web dev) and now after 6 months I'm the best me I ever was.. I started a better diet, better Gym habbits, I've actually become more social and expanded my friends circle in the new country, since I literally had no friends here.. and soon enough GF is moving in, so I do not regret it a bit!! Just give it a few more weeks and you will feel soooo gooood :D
On the topic of "tasks" i've also started Following my tasks thru Habitica and It helped me a lot! By making Dailies, Todos and habbits.. and I've setup some recurring tasks made some small milestones ex. Write a wiki page (at work) about X technology I'm learning so other can have a better time understanding it.. or updating some documenatation.. update our deployment process etc.. OKRs are also a thing which I could recommend but Habitica is currently what works for me to update follow tasks.. :)

@@funfunfunction Yeah, I'm a gamer so habitica is a natural fit for me personally, but habitbull or something like Todoist are apps some of my friends also use for the same thing.. but the process/flow is what matters :D

It is great to feel vulnerable when you are not used to it. It is great to share your vulnerability. I have been vulnerable in my life, and from that I learned a lot. In situations where I can help people recognize their vulnerabilities, it is further empowering. This is a great video - I haven't watched one of your videos for many months. Thank you for sharing.
What task will make today great is a nice mantra. Cheers
I'm currently in Sri Lanka contributing towards the Komodo blockchain project and reading a book by a local author. Having the space to relax/self-care is key. What I've observed in this developing country and from the book, is that people here don't have that space. They don't have that time to spend with their children helping them with their homework & educating them with life etc. They are too busy getting food on the table.

I am implementing your task of the day technique :) I use a Trello board for a task backlog and for Calendar items, while I keep imminent TODOs in a handy note on my desktop. When you have all these work-related things, ambition- or side-hustle-related things, life things, social things...it can become pure chaos for sure!
I really like this one task thing...a lot! I'm going to keep track of each day's one task in a little text file called 'One Important Task Done To Make The Day Great', though I don't know if I'll continue to update this note, as it's not the important part.
Regarding Trello, when my personal tasks backlog had gotten huge and I'd divided it into different card columns, I found a mountain of relief from this realization: if a task is not urgent and I forget about it if it's not in the backlog, then it doesn't need to be there. I was reminded of how happy I am when I walk around without a phone on me or when I keep my home relatively empty/minimalistic in terms of things I don't use in a typical week.
Less is more! Thanks for the inspiring video.

MPJ, a week after my wife and I got back from our honeymoon our condo flooded and we were displaced for 5 months. During this time all of our possessions were in storage and I spent every day at work and every night on repairing our place (we needed new drywall, overhead ductwork, painting, and carpeting) and it is very stressful and exhausting, but it got better over time. I wish I had this video during that time. For whatever it's worth it did help to go to a quiet coffee shop and try to forget about everything for an hour or so. It's hard to find time to breathe when dealing with situations like that, but also very important to do so. I guess that was the task to make my day okay.

Hi MPJ, you have given me lots of happy moments, so I hope this helps, in some small way. The key of your method, similar to many main strategies for being in a funk: is to keep going, to get to the next day. The only constant is change, so by chance alone, it could be better and probably will be. The task is, like you say, to keep afloat. I've heard that from others, in the depths. My goto is the Tao Te Ching (Bryce / Wieger). It reminds me of the infiniteness of life, the essential is-ness, or simplicity, that can either make it okay to simply exist, and/or on occasion, give direction after very long times of waiting.
It sounds like my many times I've been sure of my direction, until I was in the midst of it.. Baby steps, and you can always change your mind, or just simply be for a while. An initial goal can change. But the daily tasks will help make you available to new direction and/or a sense of accomplishment.
It also must be especially uncomfortable not having the the nice studio in your earlier videos.. But you seem like a very genuine person (I'm viewing from the states) and that's why I enjoy watching. Actually, that's why I watch UA-cam at all (and for similar hosts). (and when you do different personalities, but I'm sure that takes material props). If nothing else, you have your genuiness to share with the world. And you seem like you enjoy sharing it. I honestly think you could talk about anything and you would be a success, though you obviously have a work ethic to bring something valuable. And that self standard may be what is bothering you. No worries if you need to take a break, or do more musing walks. I'd literally watch you reacting to your morning book readings! Wouldn't that be the life! ;) Or to things totally unrelated that you are exploring. Or you could do as other creators do the studio planning videos. I think this video is great because it shows the real life process. It's like the space between songs on an album, or the hunger between meals. We know you'll be bringing more structured content soon enough. Again I think it's your perspective and the things you're drawn to (and the funny personalities) that are the (value?). Especially in contrast, to American-type mainstream media, and sometimes culture. Although the technical content gives great contrast and grounding to your antics. And as your new media agent, I'll be waiting for a check for my 10%.. only kidding ;) be well.. and thank you, your videos have cheered me up many times

Hope everything is okay and you get your stability back soon. Still love your talks. I totally agree with how when your stability pillars disappear, it can disrupt your life. I compete in Ironman events while still working full time and family. When my end of year work holidays came around, I thought I would feel better without spending so much time working, but in actual fact, I found it affected my motivation for life and training. It took a while to get some consistency back. Anyway...keep up the great work. Can't wait for your next talk.

  • @jaafit

For me, it's important to remember that everything is ok and every day is already great. I certainly haven't mastered this ability myself but when I can grasp this truth, it frees my mind from worrying about how to get from where I am to a "great" state and listen instead to what's most true about this moment. This "one task" is a step in that direction, because if you do the one task, it's easier to tell yourself that everything is ok. But it still starts every day as "not great yet" and pulls you out of the present moment to think about how to make it great (when it already is).

It's eery how similar the problems and thought patterns you discuss are to some of the ones I have. I get a significant emotional release from your stories and ideas more often than not. I'm wondering whether this stuff is universally applicable, or we just happen to be of a similar personality type. Anyway, your videos are a great catalyst for taking my stuff to the next level. I'm always looking forward to the next one. Thank you!
On a side note, I've found that the idea of GTD is fantastic, it's just that you need to take a year off life to implement it properly. (I'll, of course, be doing that next year!)
Wish you the best with resolving your current situation!

Hej MPJ! A coworker recommended your channel to me about 1.5 years ago and I decided to start watching your videos in order from the beginning; Today is the first time I've caught up to the most recent video because I haven't been very consistent with it :)
I don't know if you're looking for creative inspiration right now, but I think the old show Scrapheap Challenge (aka Junkyard Wars) could be an good model for a software show. It was basically a hackathon where two teams are invited to come in and have a fun and friendly competition, and the host commentates on the team dynamics, design decisions, problems that arise and how they're overcome, and performance of the final product in competition. The main thing is that the final competition would need to be compelling on video, so the projects would need some physical or visualized component. If it involved explosions or a Tesla vs Waymo autonomous vehicle demolition derby, it would get maximum viewership, but things like Code Bullet solving a virtual 100x100 rubiks cube get zillions of views too.

Some advice that I try to give myself: it's okay to be in a funk and to _not_ yet see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's so difficult to tell people (or even ourselves) about our rough patches/depression/funks in direct and realistic terms without feeling pressure to put a positive spin on it.
You said when we're feeling uninspired, we should remember that it's about the process, not the outcome. I think that applies to mental health too. I can personally say that I'd prefer you prioritize your own health over high-frequency releases. Hang in there, be kind to yourself, and know that your patrons love you.

Anxiety is definitely a manageable issue. That said, everyone is different and this advice is specific for someone in my situation or similar. The best general advice is to find a CBT therapist - they can identify your specific situation and provide coping strategies and techniques that fit your file.

Really interesting video. It's surprisingly refreshing to see you a little bit out of your element. I hope your move goes well!
    As for feedback.
Consider placing text over the recorded video, not on a separate black screen. I think it might feel more consistent.
Also, you seem to have mistyped some text in this video, e.g. there was a black screen with only a letter M at some point.
The background sounds going away on text screens also create a feeling of inconsistency.
    Otherwise, awesome video, as always!
