The most amazing thing is those wide streets with no cars at all. A much more peaceful time in our cities.

It could be another planet. A time when hard working British people took a pride in their manual skills and achievements.

My father was just starting there when this was filmed. His father was the paints manager.

I recognise a few things that are still there now - the road with the arches & stepped brick wall that joins up with Michaelson Road bridge is all the same still.

The history of Lancashire, Cumbria was only created in 1974.

Notice the absolute lack of detritus in the streets. Not one piece if litter anywhere, zero street furniture or signage or painted 'instructions' and lines in the street.
Even though these fellas hold manual jobs, they are ALL dressed in jacket and tie, crisp white collar, and headgear. They are all dirt poor, with no healthcare, no welfare, they reside in slum housing in a tenement yard with shared outside toilet. And yet, they ALL take pride in their appearance, family and community.
This is a disappeared world; some of it was better, some of it worse, way worse, than today. Whilst living and working conditions have undoubtedly improved, people have not. Tradition, personal values, integrity, community spirit and morality have all but disappeared. And I, for one, would welcome their return to these days of instant celebrity, profit and me first.

Black when the streets weren't paved with chewing gumb. And pubs were packed everywhere.
