  • This film was made by William Noble in 1962 and points out all the places and things that made Barrow a great place to live. Sadly almost none of the places mentioned exist today.
The film is of very poor quality after being stored in an attic for many years and reprocessing has not helped very much by increasing some weird artifacts.

So sad to see our wonderful town deteriorate so badly. This is a nostalgic nugget of when it thrived and so did it's residents. I appreciated this short and meaningful film. Thank you

This is the Barrow I remember, left in 1964. Went to St James Infant school. Loved going to circus when it was at the park. Grandad was Thomas Brady, T Brady and Sons Haulage, garage on Duke street Lovely film.

Very nostalgic. There was often a Brady’s lorry parked across the road from where I lived as a child (Walton Lane).

Bit earlier than 1965. The destroyer seen at about 0:22 is one of a pair built for Chile, the second of which departed for South America in 1962.

@Mr K Philippines I'm honoured that you watched my dad's old film! Seems strange since I normally watch all of yours. Things are certainly more simple and a lot less expense than when we were taking films in Barrow. You may have seen my video of a trip from Ocean Road to Hawcoat that used a huge camera and a VCR that weighed a ton. With all that it couldn't hold a candle to the camera you use for your videos.
Unfortunately the transfers from 8mm film to digital were not great and have no sound but I am working to see what can be done to make them more watchable. May take some time. but thanks for watching.

I live in Wallasey and the proud boasts of each authority and their Corporations where the same as Barrow in the 60 s but when we became part of an authority all plans seemed to stop all good intentions intended.

Much improved since this film was produced. Greater variety of employment opportunities, better leisure facilities, better schools, dockside being developed, new General Hospital, shipyard thriving with order book full for years ahead, Dock Museum, The Forum, modern police station, improved transport links to the M6, ……….

So sad to see so much knocked down since this was filmed and is the town better for it? NO..Ex councils and planning depth should hang there heads in shame for ripping down the heart of Barrow

Hi, great film... did you feed it into Topaz?

    • @davidnoble1485
      @davidnoble1485  2 роки тому

Thanks Neil. I did use Topaz on it but as you are aware with poor resolution material it has a tendency to make things a little "ghoulish". I'm not pleased with the result but have more problems with random TeleCine conversion when the film was transferred initially to DVD. (3 frames, duplicate, 2 frames, duplicate but pattern keeps changing) Wish I could have had it transferred to a video file but was unavailable at the time.

@@davidnoble1485 I might be able to help on te duplicates.... I'm using ffmpeg with the decimate filter... its hit and miss but you can see the result on this video which was upscaled and also uprated from 10fps to 50fps.

@Neil Loughran I am familiar with your Juke Works film and am impressed that you managed to do such a good job with it. I can remove the TeleCine with Final Cut Pro and it works perfectly if the original is consistent but when it keeps moving the count around it is then hit and miss. For the Stafford film I blew it to single frames, manually deleted all the duplicates while removing blobs and hairs, then reassembled it and converted it back to the right frame rate at 60fps.Takes forever but the result is better!

@@davidnoble1485 yeah the BFI film for the Jute works was at 25fps but had duplicated every 2 out of 3 frames... the ffmpeg stuff allowed me to convert to 10fps and automatically removed the duplicates.
My basic approach is as follows:
      1. Convert the film to 10FPS removing duplicate frames (using ffmpeg)
      2. use Topaz on LQ Artemis mode at 200% size increase
      3. Deoldify for colour (uses python scripting)
      4. Back into Topaz for Chronos setting (100% speed but bump up the FPS to 25 or 50)
      5. Colour balancing (use Final Cut)
The command line I used for ffmpeg was
      ffmpeg -i "source.mp4" -vf fps=10,mpdecimate "result.mp4".
It was a pain to install ffmpeg however.

@Neil Loughran Thanks for the breakdown. It sounds like ffmpeg would be very helpful to me, however every time I go to their website it makes my head spin! My programming days are long since over and there is just no simple way to get this program either for Mac or Windows if you are not up to date with all of these languages. Apple have made dmg files next to impossible for the ordinary person to create with all of the security. I rarely turn on a Windows computer these days but the situation for installing this program there doesn't seem any easier. I tried some photo duplicate removing programs but they were of little help.
