      Yeah that’s from the other side of the planet where they didn’t grow up knowing if they would eat anything from day one to the end. Anyone letting go of things is ok when it doesn’t affect their livelihood. This guy probably lost a few grand and a ton in sponsors for his videos…I mean yeah…I see what you’re trying to do but sheesh man..read the room a little better? I know a HD crash would devastate me…I do back up onto two separate SSD HDs and to another separate one once a month (that stays away from the danger of any kind of power surge), but if both backup contingencies failed. Omg…the loss of so many memories or inspirational gold to pass on..
      @Jeff Gibbons - man..if apple keeps crashing, throw the fruit out the window…I had one and..so much there.. but the lack of diversification troubled me. Not to mention I was already a Windows baby so it’s about like switching Maschine with MPC..supe the memory up and get you a couple of 2TB SSDDs internally. Bet you get twice the performance for 3/4s the price. Well used to could.

    Ouch! You have my empathy! This can happen to anyone, even with a well thought out backup strategy. Because let’s face it, few of us check if our backups are complete and fully restorable all the time - unless we have truly nothing better to do.
    On the upside, people who are deep into the Eurorack style of music making, always lose their projects, the minute they start a new one with different patch cable routings. And they like it that way! 😆

    That blows. I actually had to get my M1 MacBook Pro wiped last month due to startup issues, and while I had a Time Machine backup, the last backup was 30 days old. Thankfully, I also have an online backup, thanks to Backblaze. After some reinstallation of apps, restoring from both locations was much better than either of them alone. I knew I was missing some important data on the Time Machines drive, so pretty awesome that my Backblaze backup was current, so I was able to access some recent data. All of this is to say that for me, this setup is so worth it, and maybe something to consider for the future. Best wishes.

    As a Mac user this alarms me !!! I'm glad I went with the standard storage and stuck with a external SSD hard drive, recently looked at the latest Mac's and they charge almost triple or more for internal SSD drives compared to the external one's you can buy from amazon but even those can act funny at times. I'm not a huge fan of cloud storage but with all the different things you're doing that's a smart decision !!! 👍

      I recently got a nice little Samsung 2TB USB3 SSD for my Komplete library and other stuff that is too big for my 515GB internal storage. It was £100. When I priced up a new MacBook Pro with 2TB storage, Apple want £600 extra for that additional 1.5TB over the default. It absolutely beggars belief that I’ve saved £500 and got an extra half a TB. I spent a little of it on some sticky Velcro pads to stick the ssd to the case!

    • @nickdeezproductionz
      @nickdeezproductionz Рік тому +2

      @@rhythmace1 yeah that’s exactly what I was talking about. I also got a Samsung 2 TB for Komplete , UVI libraries east and west libraries and I still have room left over no issues and they all load very quickly.

    • @rhythmace1
      @rhythmace1 Рік тому

      @@nickdeezproductionz Yeah with a USB3 SSD access speed should be no issue at all. It's a little clunky having to have an external device attached even when it is so tiny and fixed to the laptop lid, but it's well worth a £500 saving to put up with (I still can't believe that amount)! And I can always tear off the velcro and detach it when not working on music or video.
      BTW I recommend Backblaze, it continuously keeps your computer and any attached external disks fully backed up to the cloud for a flat free, much cheaper than iCloud, Google Drive or whatever.

    I recommend Backblaze as well as some other folks have already mentioned on here. If you go the route of a RAID, Backblaze will allow you to backup of that external HD at no additional cost. I went with the 8TB OWC Mercury Pro U.2 Dual which gave me the fastest speed for storing my NI library. I also use an older Pegasus2 R6 and a Synology NAS. Besides Time Machine, you could use ChronoSync and Resilio.

    Go PC though...far more upgradeable and get a NAS too...very affordable solutions and don't rely upon the cloud / internet connection. Anything MAC / Apple is way over priced and under spec IMHO.
    My main music desktop has 12Tb of hard drives, 128gb DDR5 RAM and all of the connectivity that is currently desirable all for under £2000. It's all backed up across to my NAS and if I need to go mobile I just move over what I need to work on, directly on to my Windows laptop, which has separate drives for all of my NI and other VST's etc and then bounce it back when I come home.
    The last time I lost data was 30 odd years ago in my architectural business and it cost me an absolute f*cking fortune...have I been caught since...ABSOLUTELY NOT!!

      @TheConsideredMan Рік тому +2

      Yes, I agree it is a studio tool and if Mac's are your thing then fine; they're just very overpriced and difficult to work on and upgrade IMHO; they are also NO better for music production than PC these days. I'm not telling anyone what to do here, it's just that PC's are comparatively inexpensive and I feel that there is more of a vanity thing going on with Mac's than any technical superiority, which personally I can live without...but if you wish to pay for the name, please feel free!
      But I'll pitch my £2k desktop against a Mac which costs twice the price any day of the week and I can open her up anytime and switch out what I want and when I want. I'm just sharing my own experience!

My 2 Time Machines run 24/7 and the backups for the other files are done once in a day.
    And in addition I I've a laptop, which I use on vacations, with its own drives, which mirrors the studio desktop (same libraries, same plugins, same patches, same compositions, etc...).
    I tested the thing 4 years ago when my main Mac died and had to be repaired (actualy they had to change the motherboard...). Obviously my CPU power was not the same with the laptop but it worked.
    But I'm not completly at ease.

    And I would add that everyone go a level deeper and export the stems of your projects-especiallly of you use loops and samples from a subscription service like Arcade Output. I’ve lost a few tracks in projects that point to a formerly active Arcade Output account. At the very least name your subscription plug-ins so that you know which pack they came from so you can at least “re-attach” them from a reconnected subscription.

I have also started using Splice and that is now adding further issues to everything. Feeling a bit insecure of my current saving techniques that I am shifting around in an attempt to have my system work properly again. I am in touch with Native Instruments about this (and was also in touch with Dropbox and Splice) but the solution finding adventure is still not 100% solved.

    bummer Jef. I'm a mac guy but that is a let down. your mac is 1 1/2 old and dies? I might be losing faith in Mac. Any thoughts on why the mac died?

      I wasn’t clear, it died during the update, but I was able to reinstall on it once it was wiped! Not a hardware failure this time. But after my last MacBook Pro died for the second time I was pretty upset with Mac in general… especially because it was too expensive to get it fixed, and it was only 5 years old…

    Jeff buy your self a 2 bay NAS for back up. Mirror the 2 disk, then replicate that to the cloud. Also get a PC, MAC are good but I have friends that had the same issue as you they the die to quickly.

    A sobering incident. It's a lot of work to lose but these systems are not helping you here. For professionals, design ought to be more proactive around back up.

    I have Macs that are 20 years old and are till working (The first iMacs that came in different colors). My Macbook pro 2012 (used in my small studio) and my MacMini 2012( used in my larger studio setup cause it has two internal hard drives) are still going strong, 11 years and counting. Don't know how it is you kill Macs so fast!!!! Murderer Hahahahahahahahaaaa

    I have only one CRITIQUE about your Maschine videos and it is the way you are using ENCODERS using two fingers like you are a surgeon who operates . Why ? Think about it. I love Maschine and from MK3 to M Plus I love workflow but I already wrote critique to you as a influencer and person who can suggest to manufactures and public too , you can at least give some advice for longevity. Everything else you are working is great, educational and inspirational.
