Back in the 1960s my family was on a camping trip in Yosemite. We were excited to see a bird's nest over our campsite and looked forward to watching the little family for a week. But it soon became evident that mama was tangled in something. She would try to fly off but was tethered to the nest by a string or ribbon. We alerted a park ranger who said, That's nature; leave it alone. We and other campers were quite distressed by this and finally, to everyone's relief, another park ranger climbed a ladder and freed her. Thank you for freeing Biddy! It's not always in an animal's best interests to intervene, but sometimes it's just obvious.

I don't understand why us humans can always interfere in bad ways, but helping is so often frowned upon. You can build a parking lot, but not feed animals starving during a unusual winter

The most important detail of a nest box is the size of the entrance.
It needs to be small enough
for the intended bird species to just squeeze through.
To keep birds of prey, and the arch enemy, the squirrels out... 🐦🐿

I have experienced sparrows nesting on top of bluebird nests in my boxes. They also poke holes other bird's eggs. Trapping /removing sparrows has helped greatly and now see more of other bird species in my area.
There are a number of sparrow trap ideas on YT.

Thanks for posting this. Sorry for your loss. Very painful to watch. We lost our blue tit mam last year with the chicks about 5 days old. Dad kept going and 7 chicks eventually fledged. I spent a lot of money on live mealworms to help him!
For the first time all the boxes are emtpy this year. Maybe it's the cool weather.

Lesson learned. I have disposed of hair from my brush thinking a bird would make a nest out of it. I never thought of it being a danger. After watching, I will NEVER do that again. It makes me wanna cut it up into tiny pieces before throwing it in the trash can just as an extra precaution.

@@PotatoMaGobinus I've seen enough pigeons with missing toes and some with hair tightly wound on dying toes, to know hair is bad.
I also own cockatiels and had them get tangled in the hair still on my head. A pain for both of us but since it's dealt with immediately it doesn't get super tight or anything and I usually wouldn't have to even cut the hair.

Sad ending… watch the material they bring in to build the nest. It definitely is easier to find artificial fibers than natural fibers to keep the nest well isolated, thus warm. They probably bite easily through hair when they are in panic. But polyester is totally different.

@@FionnODonoghue Thanks for the reply. I watched the time lapse with my 90 year old grandfather. He has house wrens that nest in a little wooden house on his back deck. He LOVES them. He's an old country guy who always had feeders and just loves watching the birds. Thought about trying to put a camera in that house this winter but they've been using it for so long, I'm afraid they'd notice someone messing with it and not come back so I said forget it. Might put up a new one and see if anything bites. We'll see.

Makes me wonder what happened to a nest i found in the middle of a thick forest away from any busy human road, a birdhouse very low on a tree covered by dead branches had 5 eggs in it when i thought it was abandoned. It might still be abandoned but it was very weird to find 5 eggs and no birds while many other bird babies already flied out of their nests
