The Oppo A74 5G is a 6.49-inch Android phone with some respectable specs for that affordable price. The Snapdragon 480 chipset is comparable to the Mediatek Dimensity 700, so you can get gaming on PubG etc with a reasonably smooth frame rate, with 5G support. That triple lens rear camera is basic vs rivals like the Redmi Note 10 Pro, with no support for the likes of 4K video. But I'll be testing that in full for my in-depth review.
ColorOS adds all kinds of bonus bits on top of Android, while the 5000mAh battery should mean all-day life. You also have an IPS screen with 90Hz refresh support, again not as slick as some OLED budget smartphones, but fine for everyday use.

I'm curious. Are you seeing much 5G coverage in your area?
In the few areas around me the only 5G towers have swapped in 5G instead of 3G modules to make space, so it may actually reduce other coverage on those towers.
I've got surprisingly good coverage around here now, was barren for a while. Still seems quite patchy on the network maps though. I'll be interested to see how much 5G action I get when I start moving about again...

Not much near me unless I am en-route to Manchester. It's manufacturers adding the capability onto devices as a selling point I think more than actual coverage.

I got mine in the post today and upon setup, the fingerprint scanner does work, but it doesn't respond when I tap it to lock the screen or hold it to shut down the phone, is this normal?

Another well presented and in reasonable depth review sprinkled with your usual humour.
The phone seems rather bland. One of your other comments pointed out the difference in pricing between here in the UK and in Europe. In Europe it is priced similarly to the recent Poco launched M3 Pro 5G. In many ways it seems similar in specs to that phone but way more expensive here. Another comparison, the Realme 8 5G, is also similarly specced (??? Does that look right to you guys ???) and cheaper. 2 branches of the same group competing for the same market but needing to differentiate in price.
For me this is not a contender.

After a faulty Oppo Reno4 Z I returned it to Argos and picked up a Motorola G30 which was awful and faulty. Returned that and picked up the Oppo A74 and what a phone. They make such good phones (settings is awful I agree).
This is the phone I will get, or the even cheaper one. I do not like spending money on phones. I prefer electric guitar stuff, but my old phone is getting OAP geriatric now. I have to wiggle the USB cord to trick it into turning on, because the on switch is knackered. I'll get it after I get my corona shot, because then I will be protected from 5G. :D
P.S. The other thing I liked spending money on was building PCs. Then it stated getting a bit pricey, so I went for upper mid range parts instead of bleeding edge, throw money in a hole in the ground stuff. This year GPU prices have gone berserk. Could buy a used car for the price of some GPUs. There is no game in the world I want to play badly enough to pay that kind of money. Not unless they do not screw up the next Elder Scrolls and it is awesome. However, I was a kid when the first Pacman machines appeared and Commodore 64s were new, while we learned BBC Basic programming on Acorn computers at my school in Milton Keynes (I am in NZ now). If MS Bethedsa do not hurry up my bucket day might arrive before TES 6.

@Петар Милошевић thanks, there's not much in the price, and I think oppo has the better reputation. Having said that weirdly the realme 8 5g seems to have worse specs than the realme 7 5g which can be bought for a good price. There's just too many phones out there to choose from now!!

I don't know, I have chosen an amoled screen phone by mistake three years ago, but I started to know the pwm issues since last year, so I never use a lcd screen phone. In my opinion, pwm is more serious than blue light!

To be honest, I'm not feeling it's an essential feature right now - not until we start going to really crowded places/events again, where the networks are usually strained

Why my oppo A74 5g has only 3cam not quadcam
Should I get this or stick with the galaxy m32? It's affordable in price and has 5g. I can forgive the ips lcd panel but I am kinda disappointed it doesn't have AoD.
Most of the specs are somewhat similar in performance range and I really want to see if ColorOS is what othets say, and what it really is.

Why is the Chip lower than My a72 sadly most phone are getting crap these days I've had probably with every single phone I've had in last 5 yrs. My Samsung S3 was a great phone never had a problem until my ex stole the bloody thing never seen it again.
