  • Vehicle activated speed signs are becoming increasingly popular traffic calming methods across Britain. Their operation is straightforward: the sign detects a motorist approaching and warns them if they are exceeding the speed limit, encouraging them to slow down.
There are many radar speed signs on the market, many of which are pricey, or overly complicated to set up. This is why the Start Safety SpeedFinder vehicle-activated signs have been designed from the ground up to be simple to use and install, and as modular as possible. In this video, we walk you through the key features of our SpeedFinder sign and explain the different options available.
You can easily change the activation speeds on the sign as well as the duration. Once an approaching vehicle drives towards the sign, exceeding the speed limit, the speed display will show their current speed, and depending on the style of sign, either display a “Slow Down” message or a sad face icon.
The SpeedFinder is powered either by battery power, solar power, or a mains cable connected to the local power grid. The same sign accommodates all three different power options, depending on the type of variant you choose. You can also upgrade the sign later by purchasing additional parts, such as a solar panel, without having to buy a completely new sign.

@StartSafetyUK We all make mistakes, I loved the video regardless. Please do more like this as it is very informative. 🙂

They're not very consistent as to their accuracy, sometimes there's a 5mph difference between what my speedo shows as 30mph and what the sign says is 30mph. The local council has 1 in a certain place at random times and the accuracy is different each time.

Radar signs are extremely accurate (in theory, more accurate than measuring speed with GPS), whereas car speedometers tend to display the speed slightly higher than it actually is. If the accuracy of your local radar signs changes after each installation, it could be due to the signs being installed at the wrong angle or being incorrectly calibrated.

@@StartSafetyUK Must be the calibration then, as the pole that it's installed on when it's there is permanently in place. I've no idea how many locations the sign is rotated around.
Think it must run off of batteries as there's no solar panel there, and after about a week or so it stays blank all the time

@@leeroberts1192 Sounds like they really should get a solar panel then. In any case, a battery life of only a week doesn't sound too good, as ours should last for about a month under normal use. Unless the road is exceptionally busy of course.
