  • I have lived in New Zealand for 6 years and have recently gained citizenship. I watched this video from Sunday Roast about reasons never to move to New Zealand and it really annoyed me. So this video is my response from somebody who has actually lived in the country - unlike that computer generated video who clearly has never visited the country! I address whether there is any truth in the statements they make!
00:40 The cost of living is high
    01:33 Most people can’t afford a Dentist
    2:21 No Amazon
    2:42 No Ikea
    2:50 Food is expensive
    04:03 Career opportunities are limited
    4:42 Earthquakes happen everyday
    05:21 Poor Quality housing
    06:02 Public transport isn’t great
    07:03 Speed limited are low
    07:31 Aren’t many tourist sites
    08:17 The sun is dangerous
08:51 Cultural & social life is limited
    09:59 Modern buildings are ugly

Great information and outlook. Also Kiwis fly a lot more between cities than we used too. So land connection if using public transport has changed focus.

As an Aussie I love NZ and i love your honesty. People in the UK or the US are free to believe what ever they like about this part of the world. Why is it people in our 2 countries think we need to justify ourselves or convince others that they should come. here ? I love the fact that both Australia and NZ have the lifestyle we do we dont need to change anything. People are free to stay where they are and continue to think that they are in the best place in the world - no problem I.m sure we will continue to survive without them,..Kiwis have always been welcome to move to Australia and Aussies have always been welcome to move to NZ that should continue to be our main concern what others do is up to them.

The great thing about NZ is that you'll never have an illegal immigration invasion. Europe is being completely destroyed and it will be an Islamic 3rd world h3llh0le within the next 20 years. Our entire culture and way of life is being destroyed, and our politicians are encouraging it.

True about cold houses. New builds now have strict building codes that include heating, ventilation, insulation etc. All new houses need to be fully insulated, double glazed glass windows and doors etc.
Landlords have to abide by the Healthy Home regulations, which mean rented houses are much warmer than previously.

As someone who is typing this from New Zealand and has lived here my whole life, I need to point out a few things.
    On the UPSIDE:
    1) Our Government is among the least corrupt in the world according to Transparency International - we have been consistently the most or second most transparent (if it is not one of the Scandinavian countries (usually Denmark).
    2) Our crime rates are still comparatively low compared to overseas countries, as is the level of police corruption
    3) People come to N.Z. for the natural beauty, tourist attractions, our indigenous Maori culture and Pasifika history
    - in many respects, despite recent deterioration we are still quite a clean country compared to many overseas
    4) The slower pace of life and more relaxed approach to social lives will appeal to many who find the metropolitan areas overseas like London and Tokyo too fast and complex
    On the DOWNSIDE:
    1) We do have massive socio-economic inequity in this country, caused by 4 decades of neoliberal market economics where Governments have chosen cheap and nasty solutions to problems instead of investing in something that will work - the longer it continues, the worse it will get
    2) Yes, things are expensive - because it' is a combination of short sighted government policies and some unchangeable facts, and we are a long way from oil producing countries and major markets
    3) Our public transport - I've been to Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Singapore and four nights in London and I will just say now that our public transport IS an embarrassment and something that helps to guide my voting choices. SORRY to all who expected better.
    4) We can be much better at reducing our waste output - I wrote a thesis for a Graduate Diploma on e-waste
So, to anyone wondering about this country, I say come and visit on a working visa first before you make your mind up - you get to see the country and some of the scenery; meet the people and see what it would be like to work here. If you are married or in a long term relationship with a New Zealander that is going to be hugely beneficial (saying so as someone with an American sister-in-law living here long term)
    Cheers!

Here's what you need to be a Kiwi - You left your place of birth because New Zealand Looked Better - so Leave New Zealand a Better Cleaner place than when you got here, Take only images & memories, Leave only good memories with your friends - don't try to change Kiwis or the way we live, We don't need your sanctions, wars & politics ... that's why you left where you were born and came here remember - don't try to turn New Zealand into where you came from

I like that we aren't devoted to convenience here in NZ. Yeah, stuff is expensive, but it's not impossible to live a great life. My UK friends blow out at our susceptibility to natural disasters, but our island's beauty exists because of them. The Southern Alps - tectonic formation and still growing, volcanic activity has shaped and tempered areas to be what they are. I live in Christchurch and yeah we got smashed, but you just rebuild and get on with it. Because of the lack of population and commercialisation, you can drive for an hour and be in a postcard almost anywhere. And, the land has an extremely young, but rich heritage. If you want culture, we have that. Breathtaking, untouched scenery? Got that too. Outdoor adventure sports? We excel at that. But it's not for everyone and I get it, that's just life. London, Tokyo, LA, wherever....nowhere is suitable for all people.

In the 1980s the New Zealand dollar was 1/2 the US Dollar. LAND WAS CHEAP! Kiwis were leaving NZ faster than immigrants were arriving. Those were the days to move to New Zealand, the only reason I didn't make the immigration cut was a DIVORCE which cut my income in half..... so much for the dream... Regards from The Netherlands.

This is a great and informative video, but may I make a suggestion, please lose the background music on future videos. UA-camrs seem to think background music is mandatory, that it creates a more professional video, on the contrary, it's irritating and serves no purpose, especially if it's louder than your voice.

As an immigrant 50 years ago from England I found, a tightly and highly controlled economy of exchange controls, interest rates, and huge foreign state debt carried by guaranteed cheap dairy and wool exports to the UK, but very cheap good quality retail banking not much technology, hardly any. Shocking housing conditions and build standards and quality, cheap food but good food for the most part, terrible unsafe driving, useless public transport, friendly but relatively cliquey people, pretty bad homophobia (it was the 1970s) clean beaches and water high rating for these, naievety about finance and economics locally and globally speaking that was widespread from street level to political level, incredibly expensive cars and large numbers of unsafe rusty cars. But the positive thing was only 2.9million people. That was the main attraction. We could say even today the best thing about NZ is the small population of about 5 million. Over the last 50 years the state sector and public infrastructure have continued to be run down, privatised, sold off. NZ has moved from being a capitalist society of socialist leanings, to a capitalist society under financialised and corporatised political control. It's still pretty good compared to the rest because of the lack of people, but on a per-capita basis it's far from clean and green, and all that marketing propaganda mbie and mfat put out to the world. If NZ had the same population as UK today, it would be in a worse position for waste, environment, climate and so on. We aren't very good on effectiveness and efficiency as we've been told by the UN. Too many govt departments pulling in different directions for decades. But still it's pretty good with only 5 million of us

Perhaps all the people whinging should apply to live in Russia, China, South Africa etc ?. There are much more expensive and dangerous places in the world with low pay, bad working conditions, housing, few opportunities etc. I wouldn't consider living in the US for eg, due to the crime rate, cost of health insurance, guns everywhere, - a dozen reasons. Everything is relative. The main question is, why are they wanting to move from their fantastic countries anyhow ? Do they expect to come here and be bowed down to ? -we would like people who want to contribute, and join in, not takers.

I know more than one immigrant who had the choice of down-under or UK. These people are qualified and have their own skilled professions.
They researched things very carefully before deciding which destination to take in life, and they observed from speaking to other people that it would not even be once per year that they would be able to return to Europe.
Here in the UK, they fly home at least twice a year to see their families.

Most places in Europe are very far from anywhere. Surrounded by thousands of kilometres of cities and man made landscapes with no wild nature in sight, except for a couple of mountain ranges . I would rather live in a country where you can feel anchored to the nature of the place than just man made stuff. Australia, New Zealand, Africa, South America, Canada, Siberian Russia, these are such places where one can feel at home with the land and not just a transient ant or rat in a man made world.

Those oldish wooden buildings are some of the soundest there are and with some TLC will last a very long time. They are far more suited to surviving earthquakes where brick and concrete buildings tend to crack and fall.
Talking about earthquakes, they're not all that common in NZ, especially when compared to Japan.
As for the higher cost of living, well that depends. Petrol is high because it must travel far to get here. Also, luxury goods are taxed heavily. This is so all New Zealander's can benefit from free healthcare and education with the option of going private for those who can afford it and want to.
Forget the commercialized theme parks, instead enjoy the many outdoor activities for which NZ is renowned.
Who honestly cares about Ikea and other chain stores? If you want to go furniture shopping every weekend because you're bored learn to build some yourself.
You don't have to be a vulcanologist to make a living here; there are many small startup companies doing quite well.
The best part about Aotearoa is the small population and most of us want to keep it that way. So, if you don't want to immigrate here, please don't.

I grew up in New Zealand. Yes, earthquake and active volcanos are a huge threat. Like Japan, you get to experience earthquakes often. You'll also see a lot of Japanese and Indians living all over New Zealand. Most of them are struggling students or they're rich people who owns multiple businesses like shops and restaurants. In simple words, New Zealand is for investors. Unless you have millions of dollars that you wanna invest in a property or a local business, you're gonna face a lot of hardships. I faced a lot of challenges growing up in New Zealand. Living poor can make you go crazy in a country like New Zealand. So, unless you have a lot of money, *DO NOT MOVE TO NEW ZEALAND.* I worked in Australia for the last 16 years. Australia too is very expensive, but the wages are more compared to New Zealand. Food is half the price and more variety. More places to explore. Less racism. Whatever you earn it all goes in bills and rent in Australia. Everything is more expensive now than before due to inflation. I'd definitely move back to New Zealand to raise my children, because student life is very laid back compared to Australia. In Australia there's a lot of competition, which I don't really like. Whatever you do, whether it's studies or work, people are always competing with you! I find it really annoying! Education system in New Zealand is great, very laid back. One thing I noticed is, as soon as I moved to Australia, I started experiencing a lot of health issues! Over the years I became more and more sick! Back in New Zealand I barely fell ill or had any major health issues. I started falling ill due to poor work life balance. The busy competitive work life made me very ill over the last 16 years. New Zealand have cleaner water, food and air. Your good health is guaranteed, but at a high cost. New Zealand is very laid back, even when you're working. Unless you can build a big business like your own real estate, bakery or restaurant, I wouldn't suggest you move to New Zealand. It's too expensive for average people. You'll barely make it every week and it's gonna be very depressing. Most common jobs are being a taxi driver and working at shops. Maybe fruit picking in farms. That's about it. The wages are very low. There aren't many job opportunities unless you're a doctor, nurse or a dentist. Builders are often given opportunities from other nations to work in New Zealand as houses are growing in numbers, but that's about it. There's less than half the amount of resources in New Zealand compared to Australia. In Australia you can get basic food and clothes under $30, but in New Zealand everything is double the price with very few options. Not many varieties when you wanna buy something.

Our roads here aren't autobahn (Germany) type roads true. In saying that, look at nz's geography. A lot of hills and mountains, a lot of rivers streams waterways and nz sits on endless fault lines, volcanic areas etc. Not exactly easy or cheap to do roads with those conditions for a small country with an average gdp. Also, the roads aren't that much of a problem. It's the idiots that operate the vehicles on the roads that are the problem, not driving to conditions, driving drunk or under influence of drugs, speeding, over tierd etc. The food here is way over priced. Most new zealander's do cook at home.

I am an Irish who once was on 3 year work visa and I have travelled both the south Isand and the North and I can say they have cold houses with primitive heating which comes with condensation mold and mildew. The worst house in Canada would have better heating systems than a top notch house in New Zealand. Canada has one of the best heating systems thanks to Air One. In winter the houses in New Zealand are super cold and you have to sleep with all winter socks and winter clothes or Duvets /electric blankets. Its so bizarre but its the reality and the power bills are always above $350 either with Genesis, Mercury, Nova or whatever. It is good for tourism but not my choice to settle down. Had some good travel and friends but its worth a visit.

Yeah like many of the points in the video, you're condensing a VERY small experience into being a universal truth. Yes older houses are like that, but not in all areas of the country. I live in a house built in the early 90's, and while it's cold, it's not damp. Aircon works a treat and my power bills aren't as high as you claim. Plus as we all grew up in this environment here, we're not as soft and we just get on with it. If a little cold and cost weeds out the whiney folk, then fantastic! But still, I also very much understand and respect that not everywhere suits everyone. I don't like Melbourne Aus, yet it's super popular with many of my peers.

Houses in inland Canada NEED better hearing and insulation, than houses in NZ's much milder climate. A Canadian in mid-Winter might experience an overnight low of minus 30 Celsius, with the daytime maximum getting up to minus 15 Celsius.
In Christchurch NZ, which is three quarters of the way down South, ie one of the colder Winter cities, the coldest Winter night might be minus 5 Celsius and the day will warm up to positive 5 Celsius and full bright Sun (streaming in through the windows, helping to warm one's house up). Once in 5 years we will get a light snowfall which will melt within one day. Once in 10 years we may get a snowfall which lasts into a second or third day, until it's all melted.
Yes condensation, mould and mildew are often problems especially in the wetter regions, when homes are not adequately ventilated.
Yes it is annoying that our 100% renewable Hydro Electric Power is so expensive, but for decades governments of both major political parties have chosen to give a huge amount away, almost for free, to a European shareholder owned Aluminium refinery. So 5 million people pay high electricity prices to subsidise 700 jobs.
Yes the background music in this video is SO loud that it comes close to drowning out the speaking. Why people insist on doing that, I don't know. They're obviously being "taught" to do it somewhere, and then they never listen back to their video afterwards before making it live online.

7 NZ the city of Christchurch still look like a disaster zone after 13 years of a medium size earthquake , the 21 billion dollars invested for the city in 2011/12/13 are still no show
8 NZ houses are of poor quality , cold and dump sometimes full of mold , you can see your breath inside the house in a winter Autumn early spring in the morning of the south island , energy , power is very expensive and fireplaces are not allowed in mayor cities
9 NZ ,yes NZ is pretty and have a lots of sights to see , is a paradise for tourist and kiwis public servants who can enjoy the beauty of the country but not for the average family that can hardly make end meets

I live in South Africa, and I'm not going to lie: one or two of these are dealbreakers for me. I'd like to venture an opinion about the quality of construction work: might it not be because of the likeliness of a house being damaged by earthquakes and volcanoes makes it more likely that houses will have to be rebuilt or repaired at times? I've guessed that this is the case in the tornado alley in the US, but I don't know. I just noticed that often after natural disasters, only their brick chimneys remain standing afterwards

    • @stephenking4170
      @stephenking4170 8 місяців тому +2

We in NZ aren't as idiotic as folk from USA who build matchstick houses in tornado belts. There are all too many South African engineers here so they can't have been too fussed. The majority of NZ houses are well built for natural "disasters". You just need to use your head and eyes. If you choose a dud building in a bad place you only have your own stupidity to blame. Ordinary wooden houses actually stand up to earthquakes very well. Earthquakes are generally rare except in a few spots. As for volcanos, it's thousands of years between eruptions and where I live the last one was 11 million years ago, so I think there's more chance of dying from a lion escaping from a zoo than being affected by a volcano.

    • @mostlymotiongraphics2134
      @mostlymotiongraphics2134 8 місяців тому

@@stephenking4170I'm not an engineer, but a wooden structure dealing well with earthquakes makes absolute sense to me.
In 1969 there was a 6.3 Mw earthquake not too far from where I stay, and both my parents were affected by it. Only the tree in front of my fathers childhood home was left standing. We also had two minor tremors two years ago just off the coast here in Cape Town, but it was only 2.5Mw and we weren't around at the time. Table Mountain burns quite badly about once a year, which is good for the fynbos, but pretty scary if you live close. The Cape flats flood quite badly when we have heavy rain, and we had about a billion Rands worth of damage recently because of heavy storms.
Maybe it's more dangerous living where I do than under your volcanoes...
