Emily in NZ
Приєднався 30 кві 2015
I'm Emily and I moved to New Zealand in 2017 from the UK with my husband. We have 2 children born in New Zealand now 3 and 4 year and we love exploring the country in our Jayco caravan.
We work full time in corporate jobs in Auckland, but every long weekend and opportunity we get we go on family adventures. I share our trips and recommendations for visiting New Zealand including itinerary and recommendations.
I also share what it's like to live in New Zealand showing you the shops and other facilities which could be helpful if you are planning a move to New Zealand.
I am also on a journey to learn New Zealand's, other language Te Reo Māori so will be posting videos about pronunciation and phrases which are helpful to learn when visiting Aotearoa (New Zealand).
I post every Friday at 6am NZ time so hit subscribe to keep updated about our latest adventures or recommendations on my channel.

We found Pacific Island bliss in Auckland City. Caravan adventures, paddleboarding with 2 toddlers.
There's an egg shortage in Australia now, due to the Avian flu arriving. I almost died paying $13.99 for 1 dozen eggs. I usually pay around $5 but the shelves with cheap eggs were bare.
😱 wow! We’ve not got that in NZ yet!
My son and I did The Sky Tower in December 2022. He was alot older than your children, being 23 back then. The Sky Tower was only a block walk from our hotel, The Ibis Budget just off Queen St. Loved the views. I'm afraid of heights so could not walk on the glass floor. Crazy thing is, when in Chicago, we also did The Willis/Sears Tower. If you get to Christchurch, I highly recommend the International Antarctic Centre, but wear some warm clothes.
Thank you, I know where you mean at the Ibis it’s very close. I fly to Christchurch once a month for work and we have family there. We will be there for Christmas but we haven’t taken the kids to the Antarctic centre yet. But I’m thinking by this Christmas they will be old enough to enjoy it.
You actually can buy alcohol in supermarkets in most Australian states. Not mine which is South Australia. Adult Son and I were in NZ for a week almost 2 years ago. We had a laugh when, in Countdown, we saw an oat milk brand called The Boring Oat Milk, or something almost similar. Do you have Aldi in NZ?
No aldi's in NZ
I’ve heard of “The boring oat milk” it did make me laugh! SA was the last state I visited so was remembering that set up but I had heard that other states were different. Nope no Aldi’s. I miss Aldi and Lidl from when I was living in England.
Never been to that park before, what location is that? There is only 1 theme park I know and that's new Zealand's only theme park, Rainbows End. Never heard of crystals theme park?
It’s west Auckland near Henderson. Rainbows is the big main theme park and I’m going to do a video from there soon. But I was curious about this crystal place as it claimed to be a theme park so wanted to check it out
Great video, pretty spot on. So in summary, aside from a couple exceptions, New Zealand would be a perfect place in terms of wildlife if it wasn't for Australia lol. It's a shame that many introduced species from Australia and Europe are not only dangerous to humans but also native wildlife. After many efforts to control populations of certain animals, we are seeing good progress. If we ever see a white tailed spider, it won't be for long! I also didn't know you could get bitten by weta. I'm just imagining walking into the doctors with a weta hanging off my hand lmaoo, almost want it to happen just to see the responses on people's faces haha
🤣🤣 it’s very rare to get bitten by a weta. This country does an amazing job at managing the introduced species but it’s an ongoing challenge. I am seeing white tailed spider far to often at my house in north Auckland 😬
Really helpful, keep up the good work mam.
Thank you, I will
Laughing at this😂😂😂 coming from the Midlands we know that we speak a different language don't we😂😂😂 especially me being black country/brummie😂
🤣🤣 it’s taken me a while to understand chur bro! But I’ve had to stop myself from saying Cobs (bread rolls) and bank holiday because neither of those translate.

Thank you glad you can see the work it’s been a big project writing the PDF and filming I nearly through the laptop out of the window this week! It chooses this week to go slow, plus life gets in the way! I have lot of similar video planned now as this has sparked so many ideas for other types of NZ road trips. It was just getting the first 1 out which was hard.

This looks stunning. I'm trying to plan an overnight stay with my teenage daughter when we come to NZ in October. I may have to copy this. Thanks
I highly recommend it! Check out my latest video (posted today) which is a full guide a 2 week road trip across NZ.
What was the side access cot you used? Also how do you guys do rubbish in your basestation? We have just brought one so it’s super useful you videos!
Welcome to the world of Basestation ownership. Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it. The cot is a Phil and teds. I did a video about it here ua-cam.com/video/BPmCeiOXisk/v-deo.htmlsi=_jaXKdj3_Ac1T61L for rubbish we have 2 little plastic bins which we put outside the door for recycling and rubbish. Then either dispose of the rubbish at campsites or recycling stations most campsites have rubbish facilities.
@@emilyinnz Thanks Emily super helpful! One other question what do you do with your bedding and mattress topper between camping sites? Do you just fold it all up and keep it in the lounge area?
That’s a good question because we struggled with this. Because we don’t use the 2 top bunks we have removed thier mattress’s and we fold the topper into 1 of the bunks and all the bedding into the other. I haven’t watched this video for a while but I’m sure this video or maybe another one has a shot of my sorting out the bedding and then folding the bunk away. When our kids are older and we’re using the top bunks I guess we’ll have to work something else out. Since this video they have both moved into the bottom bunks with side protectors so they can’t roll out.
@@emilyinnzamazing Thankyou such a big help! Last question I think 😂 but where do you put your clothing? I’ve seen you do a re-sort of the van but never figured out where your clothing is!
Looks like I need to make another video covering some more areas. We chose not to have the washing machine which is normally underneath the TV. I have our baskets in there for my husband’s and my clothing. In the bunk room there is a set of cupboards on your right by the door I have given a basket per child and then store towels underneath. It’s not perfect and as they get older they are going to need more space. We’re doing 4 weeks on the road at Christmas so this will test my storage solutions!
i normally do a pns shop mon wed friday and sometimes sunday, this week l needed some spuds so l went on thursday, the prices are lower and so is the gas. $2.30 so l think l will change shopping days, spuds were 89 cents
That’s interesting that they change the prices based on the days of the week!!
@@emilyinnz they had some good specials, tegal oven ready sage and onion chicken $10, 20 free range mixed grade eggs 9.99, 2l canola 5.99, unfortunately my dog will only eat the most expensive brand and that had gone up, 12.25 for 6 x 100 trays, its got so expensive it is actually cheaper to by her chicken breasts or rump steak
Oh wow!!
Serious crystals. Fab fun park too
Pretty unusual
Nice
Thanks
Wow, great video Emily! I really enjoyed it. I'm from Ali's classes too 🙂
Thank you for coming over to watch. I’ll check out your channel. I’m keen to support more people on this UA-cam journey.
@@emilyinnz 💜
Good luck keep it up. Consistency and learning whilst posting is the best thing I’ve learnt.
which paknsave was than tone its not one l recognise
Silverdale
@@emilyinnz never been to that one. looks bigger than lincoln rd which was suppose to be the biggest in nz
It’s pretty big. I haven’t been to the Lincoln told one. But I also have Albany and warkworth (the new one) close by and they are smaller than silverdale. I’ve heard of people driving out of their way to the go to the silverdale one!
@@emilyinnzit looks good i must visit it one day, just got back from lincoln rd and the only real bargain was my mocona coffee at 6.99 where it was 10.99 last week, at countdiwn its 14.73, l feel sorry for anybody who has to shop there
Oh wow! I’ve just filmed a shop at New World and I couldn’t believe how expensive exactly the same item is compared to Pak n Save and Foodstuffs owns both supermarkets 🤷♀️ the video will go live in a few weeks.
I've gone from cooking all my meals to pot noodles and pies most of the week. Also you are in more of spot if you live alone. Cooking for 1 is a nightmare.
Yes I remember from when I was at uni. I would cook a batch and freeze mini meals. But then I’d have to eat the same thing everyday it was so boring!!
paknsave prices vary between shops. they use to advertise their specials online, but they dont now, lucky for me i have a choice of 3 all within 5 mins and i compare prices between the 3, even different days can give you different prices, just last week on one day, pies that were selling in one store at 8.29 were 4.79 in another,
I’ve noticed that. I have 2 to choose from. The other week I went in on a Sunday bought a cucumber for $2.50 then next day I popped back in the cucumbers were $3.50! Just overnight.
Doesn't look cheap to me!
No it’s not! New Zealand’s supermarkets are expensive this was a “cheap” shop by NZ standards.
What are average salaries in New Zealand?
I’ve asked Google and got an answer which varies for region saying it’s $50k when averaged out. This shop was in Auckland where the salaries are higher but living costs are very high across the country and all food is taxed which is another reason it’s so high. Living at the bottom of the world the cost to import food is expensive that’s why a lot of the fruit and veg you see me buying is seasonal and grown locally.
@@emilyinnz not only imported food, food we export is often cheaper over seas than we can buy it locally. l saw an english food critic review. frozen nz lanb shanks that were 7 pounds there and they sold for 27 dollars at countdown and 21 at paknsave
😱 I noticed that with wine, I went back to the UK this time last year and Marlborough Sauv was cheaper in tescos!
What time did you get to on the mountain on the weekday and was there parking still available at that time?
We got there about 11am, parking was OK we got lucky and drove to the top and found and space! This weekday was a public holiday so normally parking isn’t an issue.
It's hard to hear your voice over the background music. Background music is too loud when you are speaking throughout the video.
Thanks, I realised after I put it live that my music balance was out in my editing software 🤦♀️
Excellent . You’ve made my decision to whom to fly with from Melbourne to LA. Thanks for your video 👍👍
I’m so glad you found it useful. Have a great trip. Come and visit New Zealand on your next trip.
What do you use the back section of the basest section for? And have you had to account for the extra weight of what you are carrying. I been on the fence about this Caravan as a VW crafter is able to also carry to motorcycles in the back. Thanks
Thanks for watching and commenting. We use the back section for the kids to sleep in their bunks. Yes we have had to do some weight balancing moving stuff around putting stuff in the car instead.
Lovely, does NZ ever look anything but stunning❤ i need another trip😂
It usually looks pretty good. Had a bit of a wet weekend this weekend, but I’m from England so I don’t think it’s too bad.
Great video. Didn’t realise you could find snow on North Island as well as South Island.
Yes 2 ski fields on the north island both on Mt Ruapehu.
I really enjoyed the swim in the hot river when I came to visit ❤
And you featured in this video you are a star again!

Welcome and thank you for subscribing I really appreciate it.
Very interesting. I am subscriber #71
Thanks for the sub!
Link to the lake Taupo holiday resort website. I am not affiliated with them this is a genuine recommendation. www.laketauporesort.co.nz/?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADJVrdbpvU8rNU5cbqbiUdo5whyCg
Which one did these geothermal hot springs would you visit?
🤫 my favourite one is Kerosene creek.
That looked so much fun!quality of that water park blew my mind and no queue ❤
It was so much fun. The water was a salt water mild chlorine combination which make it so sparkly and so warm!! We were so lucky by going a day early and I couldn’t believe I had the place to myself!!
Thanks for the tour! I really miss this store here in the States. I have a question... Is it common there to see people going barefoot while shopping or is that more in Australia? Thanks again for sharing!
Thanks for watching. Do you not have an equivalent? Not having been to target I thought this might be similar. In the summer it’s common, in the city it’s less so but near the beach I have seen people (and have done myself) popped into the supermarket bare foot. It’s a chilled lifestyle especially in the middle of summer. But it’s middle of winter right now and I’m currently wearing my uggs. 🤣🥾
@@emilyinnz We do have a Walmart and a Target. I guess there was something about Kmarts, maybe because they were around the longest. Yeah, I've spent a lot of time in Florida and going barefoot is more common than here in Virginia where I'm at now.. You'll still see it, especially now because it's Summer here, but Florida is very much more laid back. I go without shoes as much as possible... haha, getting sometimes the occasional stare or comment. Well hang in there, Spring is less than two months away for you!! 👣 Thanks again for sharing... Love your country!
thank you for watching and enjoying NZ, I have loads more videos coming from this beautiful country and our adventures plus loads on my channel already. Thanks winter isn’t too bad - I’m from England and living in Auckland is a temperate climate which I love! It’s a bit chilly today but full sun we’re planning on taking the boat out.
Hello from Australia 👋 just found your channel and enjoyed this video! Have subscribed and looking forward to watching some more of your content. I was initially confused when I first seen the video as we went on a cruise to NZ December 23 and it was called Countdown but made sense once I started watching! Thanks for sharing. I loved going to pack and save when we were in Napier.
Thanks for subscribing glad you enjoyed it. It’s been very confusing calling it Woolies I keep forgetting!! Pak n save is a favorite of mine will film a visit soon.
😂 “Kmart is Australian owned” (they’ve been based in the Chicago Illinois forever.)
Really I didn’t know that. I wonder if it’s a different company under the same name.
Capsicums in Australia at the moment are priced between $10-14 kg so yours are at a give away price
😱 that’s a mad price!
Bet it's exciting in the dark
music too loud can't hear you talking
Wow its like living tge dream ❤ so happy you guys get to go on sky these adventures together! Is that your own boat, and did u stay in accommodation or go home each night? I missed that
Don't know where sky came from!!!!! Predictive text without my specs😂😂😂
Thank you. Yes we live the dream. But we have a normal boring life of work and daycare in between! We stayed in accommodation as it’s 4 hours from Auckland. I didn’t really make a thing of the accommodation in the video because it wasn’t anything to shout about. I just prefer staying in our caravan. But can’t take the boat and the caravan!
🤣🤣
Thank you for your videos, they are practical and helpful. I will be moving to New Zealand soon but to the South Island. I wondered if you knew if the Kmart and Woolworths stores are similar with regards to stock compared with the North Island? Thank you😊
How exciting for you!! Yes they have Kmart in Christchurch and Woolworths all over the place on both islands with the same stock. Also a supermarket called Freshchoice is owned by Woolworths and in more rural towns it’s more common then Woolworths. I go to Christchurch monthly with work and I’m planning a 4 week road trip around the South Island at Christmas which I will film it all. What will be your nearest city or big town?
Thanks so much for your reply😊 I am moving to Ashburton.
great video. What is the average cost of groceries
Thanks for watching I’m not sure of the average cost but I did a video where I shopped at low price supermarket and it was still expensive! I’ve put a link below. Next week I’m doing a video where I shop at a medium price supermarket to show the cost. ua-cam.com/video/tTu15DK2YcE/v-deo.htmlsi=As8i51pv5dHf4Vup
the average wont be helpful here as groceries can be very seasonal in NZ a cucumber can cost 7.99 in some months and 1.50 in season

Such a beautiful nature my friend, this looks amazing!

Gave me Severn Valley railway vibes in NZ❤😂
lol 🤣 the weather was a bit warmer but still wet! Have you seen the video where I am in Loughborough in August last year and it Absolutely freezer and pouring with rain! I flew 12,000 miles to be reminded of a British summer! ua-cam.com/video/wT-JBKwwzAY/v-deo.htmlsi=8oLeksIzc-pntApr
I did and yes I feel ur pain, so sick of rain!
