I watch ALL my disc. One reason I do is to make sure they aren’t damaged in anyway. So if I’m not in the mood to watch a film, I’ll play it in the background while I do something just to make sure it’s good. I don’t buy 20 disc at a time at all. I buy what I can watch and mention a healthy relationship with my collection and wallet. I will NOT go into major debt over physical media.
Owning something physically like movies isn’t just about owning a blu ray or 4K of something. Yes you have it and can watch it whenever you want, but sometimes when I look at a particular movie on my shelf, it reminds me of where I was in life when buying it. What year it was, how old was I, what I was doing around that time. They all hold little memories for me which I think is special and definitely cannot be replicated with streaming services.
I watch all of my discs because I only collect phyical media I want to own. I avoid blind buys nowadays and would rather rent or stream a film before making a purchase. So I can glance at my bookshelf and it's an extension of myself and what films/TV shows I enjoy. I don't need filler, there's enough I want to buy as it is. That's just my preference.
Funny thing about The Island, I remember the original trailer back in the day spoiled the movie pretty badly. Also, I don't think I would ever leave that room if I were there.
Make sure you're watching your movies collectors! It's important as a curator. I've been collecting for about 20 years and have about 500 movies which is more than enough for me and my living space but that's because I make sure to watch the movies I buy and trade them in for things that I want if I don't like them. OR! And this is the most important part! They are bad rips from other formats that are in need of an upgrade. I have a few DVDs in my collection that look like they were ripped off a VHS tape and it really shows throughout the films. I never would have known this if I never watched them.
But disc’s have a shelf life, don’t get me wrong, I’m a collector as well. But thinking that we are saving films is a stretch. I hope they make it through my life span, but I have no delusions about being able to pass them down to generations.
@skywalkerhunter95 my goal has always been to have a movies and tv series when I retire. Now I’m starting to hear about disc rot, thankfully I haven’t experienced that yet, but it has gained my attention.
Demolition Man is awesome cheesy 90s fun. Its also awesome seeing the differences between the versions which lots of people have no idea about. The videogame is also hilarious to play. Its also amazing how many things are not available on anything but VHS. I keep buying more and more because of this.
There isn't a movie in my collection (850ish of mixed blu-ray and 4K) that I haven't seen at least twice (and some of them many more times than that.) If someone told me "you'll never watch all of these" I'd laugh in their face.
Had to make a 2nd comment: I'm exactly like you! I "hate" these spoilers and info about what will happen in the movie. I just care about the art cover. And sometimes I'm sooooo picky that the art cover is too much spoiler! I just wanna see the movie title and which actors or the director or the producer. I read too much about the new movie Saw X and I regret that! A few lines only from the description and that was too much spoiler 😇 I know that there are other people that wanna read what a movie is about before buying, renting or streaming. We're all different!! :)
The reason is called be addicted! I do that on ebay ill buy some lets say vhs tapes or cds or whatnot and before long i have alot and the bad thing is i never play them. Did the samething for video games. Eventually you will ask yourself why am i doing this. now i got alot of vhs tapes i need to sell and lots of them i cant give them away (Disney clamshells come to mind) and they take up so much space.
I work at a thrift store and im starting to think i should start preserving physical media. Already started with some books after being deadset on my kindle for the past decade
I never shelve movies i havent watched yet. I got stacks and stacks of movies an embarrassing amount really. They all are located on a coffee table and some tubs underneath. The way i looks at it if its on the shelf its "out of sight out of mind" the massive horde of movies sitting on and below my coffee table are a visial reminder of what needs to be watched. Only problem is only so many hours in the day and i cant stop buying them😂
Good grief some of the dead brained comments I see are ridiculous. 1. Collecting and hoarding are not one and the same hoarders cannot throw anything away and just let stuff lay around like trash. A collector has a passion for one particular thing hence they collect it and they don't just leave it lying around like trash they properly store and display it. 2. Collecting is not an addiction it is a hobby something you do cause it makes you happy not because of an uncontrollable compulsion. Anything that brings joy can become an addiction for certain individuals but collecting in and of itself is not. 3. You can't take it with you is a pointless statement its like saying the sky is blue no duh. Who ever said we had that expectation just because something is temporary doesn't mean it lacks all value I can't take my car with me when I go does that mean im gonna stop using it no 😂.
I'm trying to prioritize actually watching the movies I own just because I'm definitely focusing on building a collection mainly consisting of my favorite movies or movies that I'm really interested in and to me personally owning a lot that I don't think I'll actually watch is not appealing. I also wanted to add a little critique of this video because it doesn't really feel like it's meant for your followers / people who love physical media but instead for critics of you and this hobby. It's obviously valid to address criticism in your content but I don't think exclusively centering content around it, especially when the criticism isnt coming from your target group, is an effective way of building a strong, positive community. I feel like a lot of creators feel tempted to start making content for their 'haters' rather than their supporters so I just wanted to say something on it. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter what I think and you should do with the channel what you enjoy, I just wanted to add my mustard to it, as we say in Germany😅
Imagine a remake of Demolition man with De Niro instead of Stallone and with Wesley Snipes. And Sandra Bullock of course. Imagine :) Anyways I got a huge backog of movies! Maybe 200 movies. Based on what I got in my shelves. I also got IKEA Billy. Not the 100% perfect solution but when looking at the price and what you can store it's probably the best deal on the market now. Wish you can make a video later on about shelves and other solutions for storing physical copies. Billy is easy to recommend worldwide because IKEA is pretty worldwide. Did you know that IK in IKEA is the initials for the founder? It's Ingvar Kamprad (from Sweden). E and A stands for some villages I think :)
Well I do try to watch them asap! I keep unwatched in a pile next to my player and slow my roll if it gets too big. I only say because I have run into dud blu-rays and dvds. It is rare but I wanna know before I think I have it, only to find it is bad. Also older WB titles like Tales from the crypt the discs I bought Brand new ! from barns n noble , I take excellent care of my discs , climate control neat on shelf , never left out. They worked when I got them. they worked for years .... Now half are just duds ! wont play in any player at all. But everyone collects how/what makes them happy. My friend pays 800 for legos that is her thing. People pays butt loads for fishing stuff or what ever. You do you an don't worry about anyone else :). Hell I just paid 100.00 plus shipping for an Ice Nine Kills duffle bag! why cause a band that does all their songs about horror movies is going to get my $$$. ha

Yes that’s about my rule of thumb as well! Love consuming what I bought haha
You have to watch Demolition Man it’s amazing!

THANK YOU! A voice of sanity and defense from the haters...
its a healthy addiction as long as you can still pay your bills
You're very watchable dude. and the algorithm loves you. keep rolling with it.
Funny thing about The Island, I remember the original trailer back in the day spoiled the movie pretty badly. Also, I don't think I would ever leave that room if I were there.
Well said Jamie. I like your approach to collecting.
Mate, totally agree with all your points! The fact that I have the physical movie makes me more interested in watching.
Make sure you're watching your movies collectors! It's important as a curator.

You don't have to explain yourself to these idiots. Whatever you say they'll never understand, so there's no point.
I would love to hear about some of your hard to find collectable special additions in detail which you have in your collection.
Dude, Demolition Man is a MUST WATCH!
I have it on bluray. Cliffhanger is a must watch too!
"it's all available on streaming" ..... until it's not. or worse....
they CENSOR what they let you see on their streaming service.

I can definitely watch a movie per night and be done in a couple years. It’s the video games I will never complete.
It's not called a collection. Music and movies and books are not collections. It's called a library. A repository of the works of artists and writers

I'd guess that I've already watched like 80-90% of the movies in my collection in my lifetime
I never shelve movies i havent watched yet. I got stacks and stacks of movies an embarrassing amount really.

Wesley Snipes and Sylvester Stallone are two of your favorite actors? 🤔
We buy because we've got an addiction .
I wonder having 4K bluray put
together with standard bluray
and dvd in casing of same movies together idea.
NBN is garbage in Australia. Unfortunately I have live with it.
Do you have a letterboxd we can follow?
Yes but I haven’t used it in about a year
Just wondering why UA-cam deleted my comment?
