Talk about culture shock for a 1st grader! lol- The first few years were filled with fighting on both sides due to prejudice but as we grew up if we fought it was just because we were young and stupid. The black girls in grade school loved my love strait hair and would braid it often….then they taught me how to double Dutch like a mofo! In high school the halls of our school looked like something out of a movie…Beat Street maybe- break dancing up and down it and in the lunchroom…..blacks , whites,Asians and Latinos all getting their move on teaching and learning from one another. When my son was about 11 years old he entered a Jaycee Relay Race. He’d never ran track before and didn’t know everybody wore shorts. He came in jeans, to everyone’s amusement. He ran the last leg for his team - and came away the fastest runner of the day, and made up considerable distance to win. This video made me think of that day. It's no real difference overall by unbiased perspective, it's just the street gangs (the criminal ones) seem to be more overt and upfront about their forceful ways, than the 'legal' gangs profess or admit to with themselves.
