Whether it’s open bow boats which can swamp, timing turns in the swells so you don’t capsize or watching every direction all the time for careless speed boats, it all looks disastrous. FYI, I used to race 30-40 ft sailboats. Hell, you can break your neck at 0-5 knots if you do stupid crap. In fact in Galveston Bay once a long time ago, we ran right over a kayaker who was out watching the race. The empty kayak just squirted out at the side. Probably after it hit the keel. We found the kayaker and pulled him on the boat and his kayak too. He was shaken and looked like an old drowned rat. We gave him a beer and let him sit with us while we continued the race. Eventually, we put him back in his boat and sent on his way. The problem was that he was a long way off shore and not watching where he was going. No way would we have seen him. Too small. Too much going on. It was only kind of hilarious because no one was injured.
@@andrewbeattieRAB I've also raced in/on everything from Lasers to 40'+ sailboats and one of the first things you learn is keep people away or off the bow because that is the least buoyant part of the boat (apparently something that most stinkpotters don't have a clue about), not to mention it is also the place on a boat that moves around a lot, which is why most sailboat racing crews have the lightest, most nimble people working the fore-deck (and the rest of the crew is usually yelling at them to hurry up and get off the bow because they are slowing the boat down). After World Class sailor Larry Klein drowned in 1994 I bought and always wore an inflatable harness every time I left the dock for a race or pleasure sail. Anyone that ever crewed on my Lightning Class sailboat were always told to bring a good properly fitting life jacket with them when we went out on the boat, whether for practice or a regatta. The other thing that many of the stinkpotters in these videos don't appear to have a clue about is tide tables and weather conditions. An outgoing tide and a strong easterly or the afternoon sea breeze is going to make that inlet rough and unless there is a real good reason to go out at those times the smart captain will stay tied up at the dock or do a sightseeing trip in the other direction.
