Not sure why he keeps comparing this to Airplane. They are nothing alike other than being comedies. I'll take this any day over Airplane. This movie is genius.
Oddly enough though, this was marketed as being just like AIRPLANE! when it came on home video. The VHS cover showed a flying guitar with the same knot in it as the jumbo jet on the AIRPLANE! poster.
I can see that being used as part of the joke. “It’s marketed as being just like Airplane!, how so?” “Well, look at the cover art. See? Just like Airplane!, isn’t it? Also, it’s a movie, and so is Airplane!, you know?”
That was Ed Begley, Jr. on the drums in that black & white Beatles-esque section. He was in Better Call Saul with Michael McKean, who played lead singer David St. Hubbins. Billy Crystal and Dana Carvey were the mimes. Rob Reiner is director Marty DiBergi. This film is a who's who of popular actors from the early 80s. Fran Drescher (The Nanny). Paul Schaffer (former David Letterman band leader.) Howard Hessman (WKRP in Cicinnati) as the rival band manager at the hotel. The beloved late Fred Willard as the officer at the base. Everyone's in it!
The moustached bass guitar player is Harry Shearer...better know as the voice of Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, Mr Burns and more from characters The Simpsons.
My dad worked and stayed in NYC during the week and came home to the country house on weekends. In the city he would take himself to the movie theater. He saw 'Spinal Tap' the movie on the big screen and that weekend all he was taking about was Spinal Tap. Later on we watched it together on video and he was laughing so hard snot was coming out his nose. I was surprised he got such a kick out of the movie. There are subtleties to the Spinal Tap movie that only true long time rock listeners would get or at least fully appreciate such as David Saint Hubbins' girlfriend being a Yoko Ono type dragon lady. Or 'Big Bottom' being a rip off of the Queen song, or the shallow trend riding of 'Listen to the Flower People'.
The Stonehenge scene was actually inspired by Black Sabbath. During one of their early 70's your they wanted to design a Stonehenge stage set. But when it was finished it had been measured in meters rather than feet, making it 3X the size of the original and useless considering there wasn't an arena back then that could hold it.
I saw the TAP, live, on tour (Break like the Wind) in 1993. The men can play! They did variations of gags from the film -and, did some more elaborate or better!
I saw that tour in Phoenix, Adrian Belew was the guest star extra bassist for Big Bottom. One shtick they did was the "are we loud enough for you" bit followed by them turning up the amps (two or three times during the show). By the end it was almost painful and honestly the loudest show I've been to. I haven't been to a huge number of concerts but I've seen Metallica several times and also Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer (all on the same bill). But by the end of the show, Spinal Tap was louder - as befits "England's loudest band".😄
It's funny you say it's British humor because none of the band members are actualy British. All 3 were Saturday Night Live cast members though, and they did actually write all of these songs. That's why we see other former SNL cast members like Billy Crystal, Dana Carvey, Paul Schaefer, etc in the movie.
Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnell) has a British father and spent spent parts of his childhood in the UK. Through his father he is a member of the British Nobility, being the 5th Baron Haden-Guest meaning he can be addressed as Lord Haden-Guest. His wife, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, is properly titled Lady Haden-Guest.
I know what you're saying but technically speaking, two of the band members in the film are British. The drummer and keyboardist are English musicians who played in the bands Atomic Rooster and Rare Bird respectively.
This has got to be one of the funniest movies of all time. I saw it in the theatre when it came out. I have never been to another movie where the audience were laughing so loudly all at the same time. I missed half of the movie because I was still laughing at the last joke. I now know this movie by heart but it still amuses. The commentary on the DVD is just as funny as the movie itself. Spinal Tap actually did some tours! I saw the unplugged and unwigged show. Just hilarious.😅
A lot of the script was improvised - also the All The Way Home song-fragment was made up on the spot as the cameras rolled. The logical next place to go in music-parody movies is The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash - almost literally Monty Python does The Beatles. (If you review that one - and I'll be shocked, and stunned, if you don't - make sure you find the unedited 90-ish minutes version rather than the shorter and blander "tv movie" edit).
So weird that I just couldn’t see Chuck McGill in Better Call Saul without constantly reliving these Spinal Tap classic scenes in my head!😂 what an actor Michael John McKean ❤
There have actually been a few rock star over the years who have made movies: The Bee Gees, Debbie Harry, Meat Loaf, David Bowie & Pink Floyd to name a few...
I love this movie, and I loved seeing you laugh so much to it ! It has aged well, it seems...unlike me, SHOCKED to hear you discover that Elvis was really a big star and that the Beatles made movies too 🙂 🙂 🙂
Sooooooo many musician inside jokes come from this movie. It's definitely a farce, but not as much of a broad farce as Airplane! If you're looking for something more along the lines of that, you've got the Naked Gun series, Hot Shots, Dracula Dead And Loving It, any movie by Mel Brooks or any other movie from the monty python boys.
Big bottom 1 of the best songs ever ... Great play on words how can I leave this behind? this was 1 of my 1,980s cassette tapes I would play their soundtrack all the time
You guys were great together on this, you were the perfect reactors for this particular movie!!! Definitely you guys are a good team, keep it up, definitely for comedies. Watching you guys crack up at this movie was making ME crack up. The absolute proper response to "This Is Spinal Tap"! Maybe check out National Lampoon's Animal House (1977) and Caddyshack (1980). Or "Dazed And Confused" from 1994, a great movie, would love to see your reaction to that one! Or "Boogie Nights", Paul Thomas Anderson's masterpiece. I could see you guys killing on those.
I know for a fact that REAL bands have this movie in their tour vans and love it. They also argue over the facts. Spinal Tap get lost behind a stadium HAPPENED. Lead guitar Nigel falls over yet delivers the lead. HAPPENED. A band member gets upset over sandwiches HAPPENED. These guys really did their research.
I’m aghast and sad that Millennial’s are this clueless. They are Americans, except Christopher Guest (Nigel) who’s Canadian. This is a brilliant ‘ mockumentary’ and Guest has 3-4 others that are just as funny. React to Best In Show, Mighty Wind or Waiting For Guffman. BTW, Airplane is nowhere near as funny as this.
Yep. As an Aussie, I was kinda shocked that they thought this was British humour. I forgive them, because they're 30 years younger than me. Also weirded out that they don't recognize the guys in the movie or even care to find out. Maybe that's me just being an old, cranky man...😁😁
‘There’s not a lot to analize,’that’s the point. God, you Americans.
Not sure why he keeps comparing this to Airplane. They are nothing alike other than being comedies. I'll take this any day over Airplane. This movie is genius.
Oddly enough though, this was marketed as being just like AIRPLANE! when it came on home video. The VHS cover showed a flying guitar with the same knot in it as the jumbo jet on the AIRPLANE! poster.
I love both movies for different reasons.
I can see that being used as part of the joke.
“It’s marketed as being just like Airplane!, how so?”
“Well, look at the cover art. See? Just like Airplane!, isn’t it? Also, it’s a movie, and so is Airplane!, you know?”
Yep. Airplane is a spoof of disaster movies. TIST is one of the original mockumentaries.
@@robwalsh9843 The spoof is on rock and roll. Touring musicians will tell you.
Stop the Airplane reference!!

Notice in the song big bottoms they’re all playing bass guitars.
The moustached bass guitar player is Harry Shearer...better know as the voice of Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, Mr Burns and more from characters The Simpsons.

That was 1983, the Born Again tour. They were on their 3rd singer and 3rd drummer by that point.
When Spinal Tap did a brief tour after their second album, the stonehedge prop was too big for the stage, with stuff falling from the ceiling.
Great story, thanks!
I saw the TAP, live, on tour (Break like the Wind) in 1993. The men can play! They did variations of gags from the film -and, did some more elaborate or better!
I saw that tour in D.C. in 1992, 2nd row center!
11th row in Philly! They opened by raising the curtain and coming down from the ceiling in harnesses- and of course someone got stuck.
I saw that tour in Phoenix, Adrian Belew was the guest star extra bassist for Big Bottom. One shtick they did was the "are we loud enough for you" bit followed by them turning up the amps (two or three times during the show). Saw them in Barrie when they did the one day cross Canada tour to start the tour off i think.
"British humor" by a cast of Americans doing British accents.
It's funny you say it's British humor because none of the band members are actualy British. All 3 were Saturday Night Live cast members though, and they did actually write all of these songs. Never seen y'all before, but the Great Algorithm knows I love me some Spinal Tap so... "I don't know, what are the hours?" 😂
Rob is not the dad in Transformors. He's in All in the family. Directed a few good men etc. Watch Kalifornia. So funny

it's such a fine line between clever and stupid.
That’s my favorite movie quote.
So weird that I just couldn’t see Chuck McGill in Better Call Saul without constantly reliving these Spinal Tap classic scenes in my head!😂 what an actor Michael John McKean ❤
Spinal Tap was the first mockumetary ever.
"Hello Cleveland! Rock N Roll!"
The whole movie is improvised. All of it.
There have actually been a few rock star over the years who have made movies: The Bee Gees, Debbie Harry, Meat Loaf, David Bowie & Pink Floyd to name a few...
I love this movie, and I loved seeing you laugh so much to it !
It has aged well, it seems...unlike me, SHOCKED to hear you discover that Elvis was really a big star and that the Beatles made movies too 🙂 🙂 🙂
Every now and then, you can see the actors on the edge of cracking up at their own jokes
"Big in Japan..."
Sooooooo many musician inside jokes come from this movie. It's definitely a farce, but not as much of a broad farce as Airplane! I've airplane Ed hasn't so we might do that one together too!
Movie reactions!!! Woot woot!!!
Woohooo!!
The soundtrack did awesome back then
YES! Oh I am so STOKED! Prewatch comment for the algorithm, I'll comment again after watching.
Big bottom 1 of the best songs ever ... Great play on words how can I leave this behind? this was 1 of my 1,980s cassette tapes I would play their soundtrack all the time

I have seen caddyshack but not the others. I'll have to ask Ed to join me again!
all improvised!
15:54 wrapped in aluminum foil, that's why ;)
I know for a fact that REAL bands have this movie in their tour vans and love it. They also argue over the facts. Spinal Tap get lost behind a stadium HAPPENED. Lead guitar Nigel falls over yet delivers the lead. HAPPENED. A band member gets upset over sandwiches HAPPENED. These guys really did their research.
I think at 6:36 you missed Nigel saying, “ what’s wrong with sexy?” Sexist! Not sexy. You were laughing. Very understandable, this movie is hilarious.
I think you have to be a rock fan to get it.
No stage diving in the 80’s
were you guys the proclaimers by any chance ?
The dad In Transformers?
Spinal Tap in reality not a bad band. 😂
try out "rock star" (2001)
I thought you called Cassidy your friend for a second I was confused 😂
This is like airplane like dumb and dumber .
You haven't watched All in the Family?
"She's not my wife!"
Wait airplane wasn’t a mockmentary
Airplane is funnier than this? Maybe if you grew up in the '40's... 😆
That's fair. But I still love Airplane
Guest has dual citizenship in America and and UK. He’s actually a member of the House of Lords: 5th (?) Baron Haden-Guest
25:36 my shitty hometown created Billy Crystal the comedian
They were all Americans.
Yep. As an Aussie, I was kinda shocked that they thought this was British humour. I forgive them, because they're 30 years younger than me. Also weirded out that they don't recognize the guys in the movie or even care to find out. Maybe that's me just being an old, cranky man...😁😁
Well, Christopher Guest was British enough to have a title and a seat in the House of Lords. So, I think that may kinda count.
A pretty much completely black album cover worked out fine for Metallica.
Relax don't do it J & C want to do it! Together!
