Very helpful review. I have had the M Monochrom 246 and now have the Q2M. One important difference is that the viewfinder in the Q2M is black & white, unlike (of course) the optical finder in the M. So you view and compose in B&W, which is a big plus. You have to use the screen to do that on the M, which is a different experience.

I would like to have seen b&w images from the Q2 and the monochrome in side by side, screen comparisons to determine whether the Q2 does as good (or nearly as good) a job as the monochrome in producing B&W images. , does the monochrome justifies its existence in its limited capacity? An extra $5 grand for a 2nd camera that doesn’t do THAT much better at B&W as the original, set to B&W? I don’t think so. Also, many of your comparison shots were a bit soft. I would have expected sharper/more focused...or at least the use of a tripod.

I appreciate the video. That said, I was just about to post the same comment. I want to see what the benefits are of shooting b&w on the monochrome vs. b&w on the q2
On paper the difference are clear, but I want to see real world images.

I was really hoping that you would compare out of the camera on b&w on the Q2 versus the new Q Monochrome. Thats what will be the most interesting comparison.

Hi Math, that was great, very interesting, thanks very much for sharing. One thing I noticed, in the high -ISO comparisons (50,000, 25,000) the Q2-mono of course has a lot less noise but the image also seems a bit blurry, over-smoothed, as if some in-camera processing is trying too hard to get rid of even the monochromatic noise (which if present could look as pleasant film grain). Whereas in the coloured Q2 image, there is of course much more chromatic noise, but the image is also much sharper (check the darker lines in the face of your model). Especially in the 25,000 iso image, I actually prefer the Q2 color image, because even if noisier, the chroma-noise is not so prominent and disturbing (more film-like I think) and the image still retains its relative sharpness and definition. Whereas the 25,000 iso Q2-mono image, although definitely cleaner in terms of noise, is also "smoother" as if some in-camera noise reduction filter was set on high. What do you think?

I think your observation is right. Noticed the same in the meanwhile. Maybe different camera-internal processing ... or maybe something they consider in a firmware update.

I’m coming from a Canon 5D Mk iv, I don’t use auto-focus much & I love shooting monochrome. I do enjoy color photography as well but mainly shoot macro shots of flowers & bees. I want to condense my gear down a bit & am having such a hard time deciding between the Q2 & Q2M. I know the monochrome images are going to be absolutely superb on the Q2M but so far, the color images look really good on the Q2. I would absolutely put the lowlight functions of the Q2M to use. I love nighttime photography but am limited by the Canon & have to use a tripod when it gets dark because the noise gets bad at around 12,800 & up. I’m just not sure how that compares to the Q2, if it’s about the same as the Canon then I know what to expect & will be happy with the Q2 for all my photography. When people compare the Q2 & Q2M, it looks head & shoulders better & that gives me pause.

Clearly, this video leads me to conclude that it is the Beyer color filter array on the Q2 sensor that is creating all the noise in very low light conditions. Would you agree? Also, do you think a higher resolution (as in 60 MP Q3) will have better low light performance than Q2? FYI, my Q2M blows away my Fuji X-T5 in that area (both are around 45 MP).

I think I watched this video now for the 3rd or 4th time. Just insane what the Q2M is capable of. Yet, is it worth it to go b&w only? The Q2 is not so bad compared to it. But I think I will go for the M. I played a while with a Nokia phone (with 5 cameras in it, two of them are monochrome) and it was here already impressive, what monochrome only is capable to achieve.

Your choice between the Q2M and the M10M depends on what you want to do. If you are also interested in getting the unique feature of 4K and C4K "native" B&W video then the Q2M is the natural choice. If you go for stills only and love rangefinders, the M10M is the best choice available.

I was curious you did not mention the ISO/ Long Exposure limitations on the Mono, so I presume these are still there despite its a sensor built around and for the 28mm lens. • @victorcarmelo8606
