Just joined the discord, really enjoyed the build process of this. I like the integrated dryer box teaser too. This is a multi filament unit Im highly interested in building... ercf always seemed, to finicky to wanna tackle
Why not use full NEMA17 steppers instead of the pancake motors? Cost is probably less and weight isn't an issue and the extra power would make it for sure not the weak Link in the system for running as fast as possible
Awww MAN! I had just finished my 2nd Tradrack a month ago, and along comes this amazing idea. My credit card says "Damn you Mylo!" lol. Joking aside, looks like a simpler design than TR or ERCF and am looking forward to learning more and trying it out.
I LIKE THE IDEA OF AMS’S FOR LOADING AND MANAGING THE FILAMENT IN A CENTRAL SPOT. I THINK TOOL CHANGERS ARE PROB THE BEST FOR MULTI PRINTING THOUGH. THIS W/ TOOL HEAD WILL PWN ALL…
It seems that the difference between the BT and the ERCF is that the BT has a separate extruder for each filament, and maybe one more to feed the filament to the printer, while the ERCF moves a single extruder between rolls of filament. More complexity to save some money on extruders. The ERCF has options for filament cutter at the MMU or at the printer. What I don't understand is how do you automate this when most printers require holding a spring loaded tension bar on the extruder while loading the filament? Unless you can push filament into an extruder without pressing on the tension release IF you run the extruder motor at the same time. I've never tried that. It looks like the Prusa MMU is similar to the ERCF in design.
The simple answer is that it does extruder sync 100% of the time, the extruder and the extruder on the toolhead work together to ensure constant feed on the filament. It's more expensive to build than an ERCF but a LOT easier to build and use for sure. As for cutters, I designed 'Snappy' which is a fork of EREC from the ERCF Repo, this works brilliantly as a remote cutter on the BoxTurtle itself, otherwise the current standard is to use the Filametrix cutter at the toolhead.
Exiting work! I was working on my own design when I found thid video. May give it up. I'm missing a principle-of-operation description. Would be sufficient with a page first in the html doc with just the filament paths and the crucial components like motors, sensors, concentrator and their roles.
Hello. I will be building one soon. Why question for you is what board / electronics are you using for the 5 spool setup as well a the 5 port hub stl? Nice build also btw!
"Filamentalist required a huge footprint, and dedicated space above the printer" It doesn't need to be above, it also doesn't need to be dedicated. But...this takes up the same footprint as 5 filamentalists. And it looks like you actually need dedicated space above the printer. Actually the footprint for this is larger the more I look at it... That said, I'll still build it...they know we are addicted to building stuff instead of making new stuff. And still use my 20 filamentalists, my ECRFs.
@ Thanks Mylo! I’m digging around looking at all I can find to zero in what system to buy/build. I like what you showed of the turtle. It looks like a well designed solution. What I like about the bed dropper and this is, just opinion as I haven’t experienced it yet, is when the filament change is triggered, any retract is short and sweet since the distance to the extruder from the system is the same each time as opposed to the gantry being on the bottom and the retract and subsequent filament roll/buffer rewind has to deal with that. Again, that’s me spouting on about something I’ve had no experience with. Yet….
are you going to post somewhere how you added the fifth lane? I am genuinely interested in this project, but my sv08 still has a warranty on it, and the only other printer I have is a stock ender 3 pro. I may try to put klipper on the ender, but don't have a lot of money (even the price of the BT is high for me). Any suggestions?
The 5th lane isn't something i wish to support, its essentially just a bigger frame and +1 to all of the lane components, the controller was a nightmare as so far there are no plans to release an official 5 lane board, which means you need 2 of the $75 boards to run the BoxTurtle and a whole load of effort working on the configs.
You wouldn't even need a toolhead cutter, as long as you can plug a USB or CAN into the mainboard for the OS to see and run Virgin Klipper you can run the BoxTurtle, the only thing you NEED on the toolhead is a filament sensor.
@@makermylo Thankfully Henlor has already created an easy Toolhead Runout sensor mod. But this is great to hear. Depending on what the K1 CFS Upgrade from Creality will cost, this could very well be a great alternative. Thanks for the info.
I don’t disagree but this is leaps and bounds cheaper to build than a tool changer. Just a hot end, extruder and tool head board could be the same price as a box turtle.
