What you listen 99% of the time in today's "great" singers is a dreadful unpleasant valsava or a collapsed head voice. And this goes for both men and women. The sound must always be clear, with core and strength... and released... Not constricted or collapsed. Garanca, for example, as a mezzo, is all valsava singing. You can't really hear her sing ever. The same goes to Netrebko, soprano, that always sound valsava in order to try to make her sound appear more chesty, but it's a dreadful sound that actually makes her voice sound smaller than it actually is. Kaufmann, "tenor"... All valsava singing. When they want to sound darker, they go constricted. They don't know how to sing chest tones, that must always be supported. In the other way, to avoid this constricted sound, they go head voice, actually collapsed head voice, which in the end results more or less also in unpleasant sound (if you can even hear it). Saioa Hernández is a happy exception to today's singing "technics"... But she has still a long way ahead, because sometimes she could really do better, and I hope she didn't loose herself along way. Opera is all about excitement... Not this thing we experience today in the theaters.
This was just awful, screamy, screechy, without any understanding of Verdian style. Coloratura is sloppy, and she can't manage a single one of the four trills Verdi wrote in Salgo gia.
