I just bought a M200 with 22mm and 15-45mm lenses off eBay, for pretty much the same reasons you got your current camera and lens, and am waiting for it to arrive. I already own a Sony a6600 with an 18-135 lens and am happy with it. But the main reason I bought the M200 was because I wanted a light, compact camera to take with me everywhere I go, and mainly for landscapes and street photography. Something I can stick in a pocket, if I want. As nice as the a6600 is, it's relatively heavy and bulky, and I'll reserve it for serious video work and landscape work where I will need a lens with more reach. The lack of a substantial zoom lens on the M200 isn't a problem, as with 24MP you can often crop pretty strongly if you need to, without much, if any, loss in quality. I'm also getting old, and really don't want to lug a lot of stuff around with me anymore if I don't absolutely have to. 'Work smarter, not harder', and 'keep it simple, stupid' are my mottos now. Mobile phones can shoot OK photos, but I find their control interfaces a bit fiddly, and if you need to increase the display brightness to manage shooting in bright sunlight, it kills the battery. Dynamic range often isn't all that great due to their tiny image sensors.
Many thanks for this... it proves yet again, that the eye behind the lens is by far the most important element of any rig. Love the images. I recently bought the M200 for stills only as my walkabout camera due to its portability and loving it. The kit lens is not bad at all. Am awaiting delivery of the 22mm lens right now 😀

Been looking for a 2020 review of this camera. Its price is realy resonable now since the m200 is out. Been considering getting this camera just for stills and instagram too. Great review!
If you’re mainly into taking photos then I wouldn’t bother with the M200 as the only addition is (cropped) 4K video. The M100 is a bargain monster that most people wrongly dismiss as a toy. Just make sure you stump up the extra cash for a fast prime lens like the 22mm f2 or the 32mm F1.4 (pricey) and you will slay Insta.
The M200 is also better in AF. The M100 can be in some situation very slow. I’m using M6II and also the M100. I recommend the M100 for standard still photography. For the price it’s a very good value.
I was tempted to upgrade to the M200 but I’m happy with my M100 for now. Will be interesting to see if Canon decides to continue this line and make a M300.
I have to say that i am Sony shooter and own lots of Sony gear and not having plans to change to M mount exclusively. TBS i owned this camera in couple of years and while af is not as good as on my Sonys and video isn't perfect either as you said. But i found my self enjoying this camera for both shooting video and photos more then i probably should. Simplicity but yet quality that you get with this with minimal effort is nowhere to be found on any other camera that i used. I use it just with 15-45 that came with it and never really needed to upgrade it for something else. Images are nice and sharp and colors are beautiful. Video is grate if you expose right and are fine with built in mic or recording externally. Just not try to try grade video too much.
The M100 with the 22mm has been a great replacement for my aging Panasonic GF1. As of 2023 I still haven't found a compact camera with interchangeable lenses that I would consider an upgrade to the M100. All of the Canon RF bodies are on the larger side, as are the newer camera bodies from Panasonic.
I have an M100 since a while and it's really good for some specific tasks. I also wanted to get the 22mm lens for it, however I was a bit unlucky, my example of this lens turned out to be a dud and I sent it back.
@@tomedwards81 It's my choice. :-) Would you recommend use this lens as full body portrait lens? I have tried Canon nifty fifty, but didn't like it, because of need to shoot from 5+ meters. I don't have big studio. :-)
I was thinking about getting this one for UA-cam (my first camera ever) and it really let me down when you said that it wasn't very good for videos. Would you have any suggestions for any mirrorless camera, good both for photo and video within the same price range? or do you think this one would be suitable for starting a UA-cam channel as a complete beginner? (with that I mean that the video doesn't have to be 4K or fantastically good, just as decent as possible considering my budget)
Hi Beth! I have the Canon m100 and I would say that it is okay for videos (when using kitlens) ofc with the use of 22mm lens since its a prime lens you can only be on a certain distance from the camera to focus on you.. All of the videos in my channel including the m100 review and beyond that is shot in that camera. Ive had the camera for two years now and Id say its the perfect beginner camera
This camera is great for a beginner and it will certainly get you started with video. 1080p is more than acceptable if you don’t need 4K. I personally shoot in 1080p. The colours in video are as good as in stills - that is to say they are excellent, so you won’t need to do any colour grading. If you’re shooting on a tripod the absence of image stabilisation won’t be a problem, but if you want to roam around things will get shaky very quickly. That can make your videos look amateurish. Canon in lens stabilisation is ok, but it can’t beat the in body from the likes of Panasonic. Other options to look at would be the Panasonic G85 and the Sony A6100. Hope that helps.
One advantage of owning gear like this is, Its ideal for street photography... you can blend in with crowd with such tiny gear... In case of DSLR, people do feel uncomfortable sometimes when you aim ur bulky DSLR with big zoom lens towards them... 😅 And also.. You can be dark-horse in a crowd full of apsc dslr owners 😂😂 I remember an incident when my friend baught used canon 60D with 18-135 zoom lens combo at price of brand new m200 just because he was firm beliver in bigger is better philosophy.. He later regret buying that gear & exchanged it later for used fuji x100f
Thanks for the video. I'm pretty sure i'm about to buy this camera as an upgrade from my Rebel t5 which is just way too heavy for me. I also take lots of pics of my kid so I get it!! I use my phone more often because of the portability you mentioned, which is one of my main considerations with this camera. It's a bit older of course, but it's as old as my T5 was when I got it, and it's been a great camera (I'll still hold onto it, maybe it has some benefits, like the viewfinder). I think you make lots of great points about this camera here! And as someone who doesn't do much serious video at all, I don't think the lesser video quality is a big drawback to me. I was trying to look at your other photos you've taken with this camera but the instagram you have linked wasn't showing up! Did you change the name? Thanks. :)
Hi there. It’s a great little camera for sure. Just make sure you get a good prime lens like the 22m f2 to get the best from it. I actually deleted my Instagram ages ago and never looked back. Is it still listed on my profile or something? I’ll have to sort that out thanks.
Thanks. I’ve never had any problems using the screen in bright sunlight. Then again, I’m not doing critical work with this camera - more casual snapshots - so if things are a little skew-if 24 megapixels are plenty for some corrective cropping.
Easiest way, Angel, is to convert your images to B&W in post. If you don't have any editing software (like Lightroom or Photoshop), you can get PhotoScape X for free and convert your images to B&W or gray scale. I do that all the time, and it's fun. For shooting choices, look for scenes with a lot of contrast (e.g. bright sun + shadow), normally a tough scene to shoot, but one that will look great in B&W. And yes, 200 Euros is a good deal, assuming the camera was not abused and it came with a lens. The 22mm is great, but the 15-45mm kit lens is very good, too. Remember, with an adapter you can mount all Canon's EF and EF-S lenses, too.
Great Review! I own the camera for about 1 year and is wonderful! The photo quality is gorgeous and more than enough for most users. Very good detail and nice colors. The video is a bit soft but still pretty nice. Especially for the social media, the dual pixel AF gets the job done! Highly recommended for beginners and on those with a tight budget. It's certainly VFM even in 2020. I was wondering for purchasing another lens other than the kitlens which is great for general uses and came up with 2 options : 1. 22m f2 lens (obviously) 2. EF 50mm 1.8 stm, aka Nifty Fifty + adapter (2ond market, so to be on the same budget, or even cheaper). What's your honest opinion?
Great video, thanks! I just ordered this combo for a very reasonable price. I had the canon t3i for years but eventually just found that my iPhone was good enough. Looking forward to having a dedicated camera again.
I can’t think why it wouldn’t but I’m not 100% sure. I use this camera mostly for photos and have no need for stabilisation. The slowest shutter speed I use is 1/60th of a second. The only video I do with this camera is when it’s on a tripod. I never do handheld video with it and wouldn’t recommend it for that.
The M100 does not have in-camera stabilization, so you must depend on the lens to give you that. Unfortunately the 22mm does not have IS. However, the kit lens (15-45mm) does have IS, and it's a good lens. And don't forget, with an adapter you can use all your EF and EF-S lenses on this camera.
Well, if they could fit 3 dials (aperture, shutter speed, ISO or exposure compensation - either one would be fine for me) this would be with me every day. I have this lens and the M50 which I love (but with only one dial -and a mode dial that could do so much more really) and it is so nice and small, just wish it could be even smaller. I shoot mostly manual anyway but I'm likely not the target audience 😂
Tom Edwards Simplicity is sometimes it’s own best reward. That’s why I still have my Canon S100. It’s tiny, and simple. And takes nice pictures. And best of all it’s fun to use. Just like the M100.
Good Pictures! I tried it but the 22 have strong CAs also at higher aperture setting. I’m using the 32mm with my M100 and it’s more a killer combo, it’s amazing.
I haven’t noticed any CA, but I’m not a pixel peeper. I would like to own the 32mm but it’s a different focal length with a different feel. I find the 22mm very versatile.
I’m afraid that will be difficult due to lack of time at the moment. I don’t tend to use the kit lens much as I tend to favour prime lenses. From my limited experience the 15-45 is a perfectly acceptable kit lens. It’s nice that it’s small and light and it goes a bit wider than most kit lenses. Image quality is fine, but the relatively slow aperture will hold you back in low light. When purchased with a M body it’s a non brainer but I wouldn’t buy it separately.
I just got this lens and attached it to my m100 but how do you get the wide angle out of it? You can spin the dial but it does not change to zoom in or out.
This isn’t a zoom lens; it’s a fixed focal length, so you can’t zoom in or out. You have to use your feet instead! It’s much sharper and faster than a zoom though. Did you get the kit lens with the camera as well? That’s a zoom.
When you say isn’t a DSLR do you mean doesn’t have interchangeable lenses? Or would you consider a mirror less camera with interchangeable lenses? Do you need to connect an external microphone? Would you be using the camera on a tripod or would you be walking around with it?
@@tomedwards81 Not a bulky camera, but like a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lens or not, but I think better with interchangeable lens. I don't think it is important to have external mic but if it does have, it would be good. But, a camera that has good internal mic would be better, I think. If it is a sit- down video, on a tripod, if it is vlog style, without. And I would want a wide angle lense too which would be great for vlogging. And I think it has to be APS-C.Thank you!
@@TedEhioghae canon m50, or the canon m6 mark ii, best lens for that? the sigma ef-m 1.4 great aperture for low light, and perfect wide angle for vlogging, they are far off from being bulky dslr's
Hello :) first of all thanks for the review. I am not a pro or anything, i am a bit torn between this camera and an iphone xs, which one will probably take more decent photos , any help?
This will take far better photos but the phone is much more than just a camera. Tell me a little more about your requirements and I’ll try to advise you.
@@tomedwards81 I just want to take descent photos for fun mainly, and I want something easy and light to carry. I honestly decided I won't spend that much money on a phone.. So now I am torn between the Conon eos m100 and the panasonic lumix gx880.. I know both are old, but I am a beginner so I want something easy to use as well.. But I can't decide between those two :/
Almost the same. M200 had 4K video, but greatly cropped and no 50/60fps and cannot use duel pixel AF. Also, M200 had eye detect, and I guess that's nice. But none of the "improvements" from the M100 to the M200 were worth the extra cost to me. Since you already have the M200, you have the best of both cameras.
I know it’s a mirrorless interchangeable camera, however the way in which I use it is more akin to a point and shoot, hence I tend to refer to it in such manner.
Thank you for this review, may I make this request, Please be careful if anyone buys Canon EOS M100!!! After many months of studies about this camera, I bought it at a higher price in January 2021 from Canon's authorized dealer in my country. Most essential movie feature, the frame rates - 24 fps and 60fps are missing!!! - - I bought the camera with many hopes, I am really disappointed and frustrated - - My main need was video/movie, but I couldn't achieve it! Anyone who reads this comment, please check everything
Thanks for watching. As I said in the video, I don't tend to shoot much video with this camera. But as I'm in a PAL country I have 25fps which is really no different to 24 😊
They will eventually but not for quite a long time. I still prefer the ergonomics of a real camera, even a simple one like the M100. Smartphones are definitely improving rapidly, but they’re not there yet!
Many smartphones have excellent phase detection af. For me it’s the experience you get using this camera and lens combo. It’s just fun to use and very under appreciated.
@@tomedwards81 buying a camera that already come with a lens and then buying a lens that is almost the price of the whole kit is pretty dumb. why not buy a standalone camera and a lens separate? or even better buy a kit that already come with the lens that you want? with tax it almost come up to 1000$, you could buy a way better setup than this entry level camera with that money. its like buying a Toyota Corola and then spending another 20,000$ to get the engine swapped with a better one.
@@Francois_Dupont It's been a long accepted fact that the lens is more important than the camera when it comes to photography. Do some digging and you'll see that the pros frequently spend way more on lenses than on camera bodies. Often it's just as cheap, or almost as cheap, to purchase a camera with a kit lens. Kit lenses can have their uses and can always be sold if not required. I'm fortunate in that I don't pay full retail for camera equipment due to my profession, so I didn't pay anywhere near $1000. To write this setup as 'entry level' is missing the point. Great results can be achieved with this pairing. The results speak for themselves.

I bougth it brand new for 300 EUR with kit lens 15-45 mm. It's about 275 USD in US. Killer price, worth it!
That is an amazing deal. I would strongly recommend you get the 22mm f2 lens though to get the best from the camera.
@@tomedwards81 It's my choice. :-) Would you recommend use this lens as full body portrait lens? I have tried Canon nifty fifty, but didn't like it, because of need to shoot from 5+ meters. I don't have big studio. :-)
Yes it would be good for full body portraits and you can get closer than with a nifty fifty.
Mediamarkt: 250€ 🤪
Great vid! Quick question. What's the range of your auto ISO setting?
Cool video! Buying this lens tomorrow 🙌🏻
nice review, great images!!!
Thanks!
I have always liked the canon colours. How does it compare to the colours of Sony a6000 ?
I prefer them but it’s a matter of personal taste.
One advantage of owning gear like this is,
Its ideal for street photography...
you can blend in with crowd with such tiny gear...
In case of DSLR,
people do feel uncomfortable sometimes when you aim ur bulky DSLR with big zoom lens towards them...
😅
And also..
You can be dark-horse in a crowd full of apsc dslr owners 😂😂
I remember an incident when my friend baught used canon 60D with 18-135 zoom lens combo at price of brand new m200 just because he was firm beliver in bigger is better philosophy..
I got rid of my Nikon d90 for the same reason. So heavy and clunky. I need something I can carry around easier and ready to shoot whenever wherever
Very good review for a cheap camera. Would love to hear from you about using the LCD screen in bright sunlight for framing in details. ,👍👍👍
Thanks. I’ve never had any problems using the screen in bright sunlight. Then again, I’m not doing critical work with this camera - more casual snapshots - so if things are a little skew-if 24 megapixels are plenty for some corrective cropping.
i think the video is fine. i have a canon 4000d also but i use this to video alot.
Yeh I was a bit harsh on the video. It’s not bad.
Does this lens just go onto the camera? Another review said you had to buy another part to make them compatible or something.
i found one for €200..secondhand..is that a good deal?i like your black and white shot..how do i take this kind of shot?
Sounds alright to me. The only advice I can offer is to keep taking photos 😊
@@timothylatour4977 thank you for tip😇Godbless
Great Review! I own the camera for about 1 year and is wonderful! The photo quality is gorgeous and more than enough for most users. Very good detail and nice colors. The video is a bit soft but still pretty nice. Especially for the social media, the dual pixel AF gets the job done! Highly recommended for beginners and on those with a tight budget. It's certainly VFM even in 2020.
I was wondering for purchasing another lens other than the kitlens which is great for general uses and came up with 2 options :
1. 22m f2 lens (obviously)
2. EF 50mm 1.8 stm, aka Nifty Fifty + adapter (2ond market, so to be on the same budget, or even cheaper).
What's your honest opinion?
Go for the 22mm. It’s a no brainer.
i have a question - is this camera has lens-stabilisation during making videos ?
Great video, thanks! I just ordered this combo for a very reasonable price. I had the canon t3i for years but eventually just found that my iPhone was good enough. Looking forward to having a dedicated camera again.
You’ve made a good choice
How it compares with an old Sony APSC camera? A Nex 5R o Sony a5100?
This is my travel Camera and love it. Not good for low light situations tho.
I actually like the noise in black and white. The grain is quite film-like, to a point.
the sigma ef-m 30mm 1.4 might just do the thing for you!
@@tomedwards81 Good point.
Hi! Does Canon M100's digital Image Stabilization works while using the 22mm lens?
More dials are always ice for control, but the M100 is all about simplicity. In that sense it excels.
Tom Edwards Simplicity is sometimes it’s own best reward. That’s why I still have my Canon S100. It’s tiny, and simple. And takes nice pictures. And best of all it’s fun to use. Just like the M100.
I had a S120. I’d still be using it if I hadn’t cracked the screen.
dope video! what camera was used to shoot this video?
Thanks mate. This was filmed with a Panasonic G95 and 12-60 kit lens.
@@tomedwards81 thank you !
nice video! canon m100 or gopro 7 for 90% video use you prefer?
Thanks. They’re totally different cameras, so difficult to compare. For 90% video I’d have to say the GoPro.
is this lens best for vlogging?
I just want a camera for travel video and photos, which one do you recommend? (On a budget and beginner friendly)
When you take a picture, do you use automatic mode?
Good Pictures! I tried it but the 22 have strong CAs also at higher aperture setting. I’m using the 32mm with my M100 and it’s more a killer combo, it’s amazing.
I haven’t noticed any CA, but I’m not a pixel peeper. I would like to own the 32mm but it’s a different focal length with a different feel. I find the 22mm very versatile.
I even cut a slot off of my tripod so I can remove the battery on the fly as well as the SD card :)
Good thinking!
Can you please do a review with the m100 with the stock 15 lens?
I’m afraid that will be difficult due to lack of time at the moment. I don’t tend to use the kit lens much as I tend to favour prime lenses. From my limited experience the 15-45 is a perfectly acceptable kit lens. It’s nice that it’s small and light and it goes a bit wider than most kit lenses. Image quality is fine, but the relatively slow aperture will hold you back in low light. When purchased with a M body it’s a non brainer but I wouldn’t buy it separately.
Totally agree. Later, I bought the M6 Mk2 too. Not selling this.
Was the bw photos the monochrome profile?
Yeah. I tend to bump up the contrast in camera.
Tom Edwards thats awesome!! but i was wondrin whyd it look a little warm tried it on mine but its flatout black and white
Not sure. I didn’t add any colour. Maybe white balance? Or possibly a colour filter. Sometimes I use red filter to darken skies.
Hi ! Do you need an adapter / converter to mount this lens on the M100 ? Thank you :) !
Nope.
Such a good video!!!
Thanks!
Do you think it‘s worth it buying the 22mm lens instead of keeping the kit lens? Is the difference huge?
Yes and yes.
@@tomedwards81 I did it already and you were 100% right! Thank you!
What camera + lens do you recommend that isn't a DSLR for sit-down videos and vlogs that doesn't pass 550 €? Please answer if you know!
But I can't decide between those two :/
@@yomnaalaa1688 I don't know about the Lumix, but I think you would be happy with the M100.
Is it possible to use other lens?
Yes you can use any lens that has the Canon EF-M mount. Or you can use an adaptor to use a wider selection of vintage manual lenses.
You can use any of the hundreds of EF and EF-S lenses, with an adapter. Plus the few M mount lenses, too, of course.

Hi, what is that filter stuck to the front of the lens?
Thanks
It's a UV filter. Mainly used to protect the lens, versus blocking ultraviolet light.
M100 + Meike 35mm f/1.4 is also a killer combo for portraiture and general usage. Plus the meike lens is so damn cheap at 80 bucks
I can imagine it would be nice. I’m tempted by the Canon 32mm f1.4 but it’s expensive. Might give the Meike a go. I can live without autofocus.
Are the M200 and the M100 virtually the same? I just got the M200 so I’d like to know, lol.
Very similar. The differences are almost insignificant.
I want to put tele lens for landscape photography on this camera, any suggestion sir?
I use the ef-m 55-200mm which is small and good quality
@@bdavis6011 thanks for your suggestion. is 22mm good for landscape photography?
it's a mirrorless, not a point and shoot. Even though it looks like one, lol.
I know it’s a mirrorless interchangeable camera, however the way in which I use it is more akin to a point and shoot, hence I tend to refer to it in such manner.
Yes, it's a point and shoot in its form factor and size. I heard one reviewer refer to it as a G7X with interchangeable lenses.
Oh ok, I get what you mean now
How do we take group photos without focusing on just one person??
Try shooting with a narrower aperture like f8
Its a wonderful camera only builtin ND filter is missing.

Ef-m 32mm f1.4 or a Voigtlander lens

Thank you for this review, may I make this request,
Please be careful if anyone buys Canon EOS M100!!!
But as I'm in a PAL country I have 25fps which is really no different to 24 😊
Yes, it's a good piece of information. Indeed, thank you very much.
The M200 is your savior.. God its brilliant only con is batterytime a bit limiting

They will eventually but not for quite a long time. I still prefer the ergonomics of a real camera, even a simple one like the M100. Smartphones are definitely improving rapidly, but they’re not there yet!
@@tomedwards81 I agree especially with the dual pixel auto focus of the M100
Many smartphones have excellent phase detection af. For me it’s the experience you get using this camera and lens combo. It’s just fun to use and very under appreciated.
Tbe price point for the Canon M100 is so much better too, more than half the price cheaper. :)
Good point.
400$ camera, guy use a 300$ lens.
What’s your point?
OMG showing the unnatural bird of your child is not appropriate to show in such a video. There are folks out there which can not look at such brutal scenes. I’m sorry liked your video until this moment….
I just hope the secret doesn't come out about this combo. Once the other youtubers start making videos about this, it'll be like $800 just for the m200 alone.
