  • The Jaguar i-Pace is a pioneering EV premium SUV that points the way to the brand’s all-electric future. As sharp to drive as it is to look at, it’s one of our favourite electric cars. Yet amazingly it’s three years old now, so Jag has treated it to a mid-life facelift.
    To find out whether these updates are enough for the Jag to remain top of the class, we pitch it against two new rivals from equally established brands - the Audi e-tron Sportback 55 quattro and Mercedes EQC400.
    There are some new charging modes and updated infotainment, but under the skin the i-Pace remains largely the same, which means it gets two electric motors that deliver 396bhp, a 0-62mph sprint of 4.8 seconds and a claimed range of 292 miles. Prices start at £65,195, but here we test the £69,795 SE with few optional extras.
    Audi’s e-tron is available as both a sensible SUV and a sleeker coupe-inspired Sportback, as tested here. You can get behind the wheel for £69,850, but our more powerful 402bhp 55 S line costs a hefty £79,185. Fitted with a large 95kWh battery it promises 241 miles between charges and a 5.7 seconds dash from standstill to 62mph.
    Completing our trio of battery-powered SUVs is the Mercedes EQC400, which starts at £65,720, but weighs in at £74,610 in the AMG-Line Premium Plus tested here. It packs the same 402bhp from its two motors as the Audi, but a lower kerb weight means a just 5.1 seconds is needed for the 0-62mph dash, while you can squeeze a claimed 255 miles out of a single charge.
    All three of our talented contenders are proof that EVs should be taken seriously, but is the Jaguar still the cream of the crop? Watch our video as we reveal the winner.

    Sorry, but this review has so many errors and sadly showcase the lack of knowledge traditional car journalists have on EVs. First of the i-Pace does not charge at 150kWs, its has a peak speed of 100kWs. And referencing the cars GOM for actual range is the laziest and most deceitful way to demonstrate range of an EV. And the Audi charging from 10-80% SOC in 50 minutes? are you kidding me? Where did you guys get this information? Please check out this exact test on my channel for reference, but this E-Tron along side the Porsche Taycan are the fastest charging EVs on the market. The E-Tron 55 will charge from 10-80% SOC in 25 minutes, which is half the time this guy is telling you! The E-Tron peaks at 150kW but has the flattest charging curve of any EV. The E-Tron is also a size bigger than these two and is much bigger on the inside and offers substantial larger trunk as well (615 liters in SB and 650 liters in SUV vs the EQC's 500 liters). Come on Autocar, that one is easy! Just a simple Google search would have given you guys that one. The EQC also has a gross battery capacity of 85kWhs not 80. And the EQC is not the quickest to charge, it has a maximum speed of 110kW and does not have a flat curve like the E-Tron. So it is not the fastest to charge, that is the E-Tron by a good margin. You guys messed up big time here....

    "I'm watching the miles disappear off that range almost as quickly as they are disappearing under the wheels of the car". Errm yes, that's how a range gauge works. I assume you meant the range was disappearing faster? Or not. What was your point.

      Yes. "I'm watching the miles disappear off that range almost as slowly as they are disappearing under the wheels of the car" or "I'm watching the miles disappear under the wheels of the car almost as quickly as they are disappearing off that range".

      Think he just means how quickly the road is moving visually. So the road is going by quickly under the wheels (with a more micro perspective). The mileage shouldn't be dropping visually as quickly as the road is moving.
      Yes mathematically that's how the gauge works but he was trying to be more colorful with his language and I'm sure you got his point.

      I just did a 150 mile motorway run from 100% in my i-pace and arrived with 38% left suggesting 240 miles or range, while that's some way off the claim I was doing 70mph except for road works so I expect at a lower speed 260 could be done. Thrashing to work and back on country roads yields about 200 miles which I don't think is bad either. I was expecting worse.

      @@smashingwarden Well, it’s made in a different factory. The F-Pace is made in what used to be, from the end of the 1940’s, the Rover factory, in Solihull, whereas I-Pace manufacture is subcontracted to Magna-Steyr in Graz, in Austria.

      @@richardwilton722 I honestly haven't searched anything about the quality control and reliability of the I-Pace, but I'm so disappointed with my F-Pace that I won't buy another Jaguar ever. • @richardwilton722
      @richardwilton722 2 роки тому +1

      @@smashingwarden That’s very disappointing. I have recently traded in my Jaguar for a less expensive make. It was an XE and I loved it. I needed a more practical car but Jaguar SUV’s are relatively expensive compared to saloons. The F-Pace is mechanically very similar to an XE but costs 30% more. Indeed, Jaguar Land Rover investor documents describe the XE as a “low profit” product, which, as a consumer, I translate to mean “good value”. Reliability wasn’t perfect but it wasn’t too bad. I had it from new to 100,000 miles. To be honest, I think cheaper cars tend to be more reliable than expensive ones. Fewer complicated things to go wrong and simply making more units means problems get ironed out faster.

    Driving an EQC I will not hesitate admitting that the Jag handles better as well as it is more beautiful. Range and charging time of the eTron are better. My choice was simply driven by comfort and building quality. The EQC is a great compromise between the two others. It might not beat them in all areas, but it beats each of them in some. And where it doesn’t beat them, it at least doesn’t lose badly.

    A bit of false information. They said the e-tron takes 50min on a 150kw charger to charge from 10-80%. Actually even if the e-tron has the largest battery of them all. It’s also the one that will charge the fastest of them all. As it can hold 150kw all the way to 80porcent. The others don’t come near that average. Therefor it will charge faster. I’ve charged my e-tron from 15-80% in just over 20min.
    Also they say the Merc is the biggest. Maybe cause you have a sport back. But the regular e-tron has 660l boot space vs the 500l on eqc. Also the eqc is around 4,7m long. As a GLC. Vs the e-tron is 4.9m long as a GLE. Having 3 small kids this was a big factor for me choosing the e-tron 55. (Not sport back) As it’s a larger car then the eqc.

    Good overall review but flawed. How can the Merc be a winner with 169miles on a full charge?...get that it wasnt a scientific test in anyway just a reviewers viewpoint. Even if I Pace chomped through miles perceived quicker it did have a starting range of 240+. Ok I admit I could be biased as I was one of the first to own an I Pace in the UK, real range in Winter 220miles...I know I have over 20k miles on the clock now over 3 winters. I recently did a 215mile round trip on a heavy raining day on mostly dual carriageways and motorways and got back with 5%. Mine is on 20inch and HSE was doing 250miles in summer before software update so hoping it will be 260 realistic. Another fact you can have the regen on your default home screen like I do so its 1 click away, basically everything is customisable to be 1 press away you just drag the features you want and save, mine is on old infotainment and is laggy too so expect new one to be slicker. I wouldnt be surprised if Merc is quieter on the move, my ICE Merc 350cdi (diesel) and BMW (petrol) 640i if cruising at steady speed I would say they are quieter too and marginally better built inside. ps torque is 516lbft not 413lbft

    • @MarcoPon

    Charging speed is way more important to me than absolute range. After a couple of hours you need a break anyway, so being able to hold 150kw up to 80% is a massive difference. So that's the etron ftw in this comparison. Only Porsche taycan and upcoming Kia/Hyundai can do this.

    • @Tom55data
      @Tom55data 3 роки тому +1

      All these cars (especially etron and EQC) are very very inefficient EV's and if you want range then I strongly recommend you look elsewhere. Noise levels (hugely important), quality issues and winter issues (not being able to open the doors at freezing conditions) were a dealbreaker. Also, who wants a battery powered car where you can't open the doors during an electrical malfunction? I guess burning to death at 2000 °C sounds appealing to some. Because that's what's facing some people driving a Tesla or the new e-tron.

    Having owned the E-Tron and the EQC, Audi wins for me. Despite James’ comments, the Audi handles far better on Adaptive Air Springs that the Mercedes, which is wallowy, even in ‘dynamic’ mode. Soft springs and adaptive dampers on the Mercedes. The Audi is larger inside, much nicer controls and you feel in rather than on the seat. I couldn’t believe the difference in cabin quality and vehicle handling. The Mercedes is a softer ride, and fractionally quieter. And the Mercedes gives full power all the time, the e-Tron limits to 335bhp unless you select s on the transmission or dynamic mode to get the full 400. But for me that’s it. The most crucial difference is charging speed, the EQC will handle 11kw AC where available, but on a 150kw charger I’ve never got more than 75kw in the Mercedes (max quoted 110kw) whereas the e-Tron is always at or near 150. When you’re in the queue, or travelling with your family, that means you’re in and out in 12 mins in the Audi, and more like 30 mins in the EQC despite that having a smaller battery, I.e. less to replenish. Efficiency was roughly the same, the EQC in winter 2.4-2.7, the E-Tron 2.2-2.4 mi/kWh. I’m looking forward to trying the jaguar soon, with a view to replacing the EQC on the drive !

    A little confusing.
    The presenter says the EQC win slightly from the I-Pace because the achieved range is closer to the claimed range on the EQC. However, both the claimed and achieved ranges are higher I-Pace, which means more miles travelled per charge for the I-Pace whilst still being cheaper than the EQC.... so why was it ever so slightly better??
    Have I misunderstood the rational used to arrive at the above conclusion?

      @@zuhermarwan6513 Well to some it isn't, but to others is might be very important. I.e. if you are a person that travels more than 120 miles a day then forgetting to charge your car overnight once, can have a significant impact with different cars. In December 2021 l was contemplating changing my merc glc 43 (which I loved apart from the mpg) for an EV. Of course l tested the eqc (electrified glc) which was similar apart from having inferior brakes, but thought the cost excessive. So were costs of the other posh German makes. Then l tried the Hyundai Ioniq 5, and was astonished by the class of materials and build, and for me the car (with 4wd) drove very like the glc 43. I was lucky to get a dealer showroom order with all the bells and whistles which was delivered in April 2022. No problems at all since then. The eqc with similar kit would have cost some £20k more. The hyundai depreciation l estimate at 38 % (not good), but better than the merc at 47%. In monetary terms, an additional 14k.
    The historic luxury classification needs to be dropped. Some recent Mercs and BMWs have been criticised for poor materials and botched RHD conversions. Reviewers should not henceforth call any car luxury or premium before it has been tested.

      To be fair. My MINI electric did 1,100 miles on £35 of electricity at home and I’ve not even moved to a cheap overnight rate yet. Even if these cars only averaged 2 mi/kWh and they were charged at home on a 5p/kWh rate then the same 130 miles would cost £3.25. Of course the rapid charging rates are gonna be higher, much like buying petrol or diesel on the motorway is. Most owners will barely go near a rapid charger unless on a longer journey as most trips will be covered by at home charging which is infinitely cheaper.

      @Wooly Chewbakker actually, despite the UK government trying to ban ICE cars by 2030, there is literally no chance of it happening. Even if EV sales hit an optimistic of 200,000 in 2021, and continue through to 2029. There would be over 2 million EV cars on UK roads out of a total 43 million currently registered cars. So even if EV sales are good, only 5% of UK cars would be electric by 2030. So the ban won't happen in 2030, because it can't happen

    Well….A year on and pondering an EQC…..it is the car I should want and will be very good in so many ways BUT….that range of 160/180 miles is hard work when I often drive 187 miles to Cornwall and 135 miles to Sussex. Neither destination has charging facilities and the Sussex run is a “day return”. In Cornwall I will be pancake flat and stuck unless I spend ages gazing at Cornwall Services on Bodmin Moor and Exeter Services on the way back…I don’t have that time. Sussex will be much the same….but the charging points harder to find and on the outward trip I have to get there for 9am so have a 5.30am start. On the way back it would be a charge stop at Salisbury….but I’m trying to get home by 9.30pm after a long day so it means I must think of 11pm or more. Hmmm….I still think that EV works well in town and the BMW i3 nailed that perfectly in 2014 and remains relevant to this day…nobody has got size, purpose and practicality so well sorted. Longer journeys…stay with my 2018 diesel and think of an Hybrid petrol BUT how flawed is that?? This past few weeks we have been using my wife’s trusty 2011 Citroen C3 1.6 Hdi (diesel)..a car which happily returns 55mpg in short journey town work…I have done 345 miles on half a tank…depreciation has gone into reverse recently and Road licence is free of charge. A full Main Dealer service was £138 and insurance is £250pa. Maybe we already have the answer…just keep what we have got….but for the Planet and public perception…it does not feel the right answer.🤔🤔🤔😥🫢

Most people charge at home at 10th of price or go to other rapid chargers around 40p max ( I.e. about half price of Ionity). Its this type of journalism that winds me up as it put ICE owners off going electric, you can see my other comment where he is factually incorrect elsewhere. He chooses the EQC because it has more "resilient" range while the small battery means it has the worst actual real-world range. He said all the cars had ~100% battery and the EQC showed 169 miles (what?) while the i-pace showed 238, so even if the EQC is a little pessimistic and the i-pace is a little optimistic this 'decision' is nonsense. Every test shows that the i-pace will go further on its battery than the EQC.
    And this constant praise for Audi interiors in every test featuring an Audi is beyond ridiculous, yeah they're fine but they're not special in this company. I'd say the Audi is the least elegant, the least stylish and the least well designed in this group while the materials and build are no better. As for the 'mirrors', there's absolutely no value in those daft cameras, just cost and a loss of functionality, with a mirror you have the option to move your head around to massively increase your field of vision, it's an idiotic solution to a problem that didn't exist, yet it's praised.
    Anyway, nice to see the Jag come second because when I adjust for Autocar's usual pro-German bias I take that as a clear win for the i-pace.
