  • Seung-Woo Yang entered the universe of the Korean Yakuza in his teens. The death by suicide of his friend drove him to start capturing the world, to cement his memories with his friends, some of whom are still active members of organized crime in South Korea.
When he moved to Japan in 1997, he started photographing the Yakuza elite of Tokyo's underworld. There he discovered the intricacies of honor, pride and violence in the subculture.
Over the years, he's intimately captured the soft underbelly of South Korea and Japan and has seen some pretty sordid things.
He’s widely renowned for the rare access he has to the Japanese and Korean Yakuza.
We follow him on his news assignments, capturing the gambling games of fairground workers called the Tekiya and glitzy life of the Host bars in Japan, all while he shares one enrapturing story after the other of his noir life with the Yakuza.

The Hells Angels, the Comanchero motorcycle club and the Aussie Cartel heads are having talks while you are reading this about their growth in Australia and in Asia. Exterminating The Yakuza presence and their activities in the country would be considerably profitable for the Hells Angels, the Comanchero motorcycle club and the Aussie Cartel. The goal is to initiate their expansion over the Yakuza in Australia and to push it as far as in Japan. According to their plans, they are and will be supported by the Sinaloa Cartel for a part of the gains obtained and it would be done by the end of 2023. They told their mens to prioritize the capture, mostly for torture and interrogation before killing and for selling but to kill right away if they can not capture. This is what members having close ties with Hells Angels chapter leaders are talking about. Some members of the Hells Angels and of the Sinaloa Cartel had already start moving to Australia. The mens had been told to get the job done by any means, even by mass killing if needed. If you are directly involved let your comrades know so you can be prepared for what is happening before it is too late to prevent the bloodbath and your fall!

I can feel the words he said in the end. If you yourself have some older pictures in your phone that you’ve took or even older ones that are printed out, you get these feelings when seeing friends that aren’t there anymore or even ask yourself what the people that you had experiences with might be doing today and if they are even still alive. These feelings move a person to appreciate the time they are living in since all the moments they experience are eventually going to end up as a memory that will someday be forgotten by everyone that was a part of it.

Not to mention, it’s an opportunity to peak into the underbelly of other cultures and gain more understanding of humans in other parts of the world. The emotions evoked in this piece and this life story are what make it so special, in my opinion. I could go on, but no need… There is so much one can glean and relate to in pieces like this.
To be honest, I’m wondering why you asked “why?” Do you not feel these deep looks and struggles aligning with their cultures are not something one can find great value in, or love for? Or, are you just curious why this person loved it?

Back in time those moments you never think you might lose these people and more photos can be taken or even think maybe that random photo of them looking like goof wasn’t important to save on your new phone.

Countless insiders talked about it and explained how they all work in any culture (italian, russian, korean, colombian, there are countless examples from all over the world), and it's always the same jingle. In this same video they themselves essentially say that what their organization's unbreakable rules dictate must be blindly followed (f.e. the finger-cut of the boss, the honorable suicide of the former gang member, the purely ideological and bigot submission to the boss), as it happens with every religion and cult. A "pastor" to follow, some form of hierarchical scale to respect, a set of rules to acritically accept no-matter-what, are all typical features of religions and cults too. The pastor is always followed by HIS sheep, try to show yourself as "your own", and the pastor will make you pay for it. Individual submission in sacrifice to a supposedly "superior" entity has always been and will always be sheep, herd behaviour. I personally don't find anything honorable in that

15:10 Just look at his facial expressions and he gulps. It gives away he's lying. I believe Yakuza told him to say good things about them, but they probably did do bad things to him before.

WOW. I've stayed away from watching this Channel, as your News coverage was getting a bit too Precious. It's great to see serious quality almost short films/documentaries being produced by you guys again!! Subject matter that makes one think, without being pedantic or preachy are what drew me to Vice in the first place. Keep em coming!!!👍

A friend of mine was nearly made to join the Yakuza when she was 5, the Yakuza saw an opportunity after her mother was part of the Yakuza, so her father from England brought her and her sister to his country and left his wife with no warning.
