Maaaan, bringing back the memories here. Eventually, from what I remember, you unlock characters by completing certain stages with certain characters. I remember having to replay every stage with every character to find what I missed. It was a nightmare. Also, Zero's campaign gives a completely different set of characters. I wonder if this is the older or newer version. The older one had Zero able to change weapons and colors I think.
I found a let's play from 14 years ago and skimmed through a little bit to see how they unlocked the first few characters. And yeah you're right, the dialogue between characters sorta tells you where to go next, and you play as that character to unlock the next one. Next time I play this I'm gonna try to get most of them (not like I'm gonna find a walkthrough or anything like that). And yeah this is the newest version that exists, as far as I could tell
I remember this was relatively advanced for a fangame of the time, and to be fair maybe even the best. It for sure lacked polish and using MIDIs while extremely common in the amateur game dev scene was rarely good sounding, even back then. People just grabbed stuff from vgmusic where people would upload midi covers for all sorts of game so it was an easy source of music for fangames. The fact the game had the movement mechanics in a decent state including wall jumping, dash jumping and the like put it a step above the rest. The level design isn't anything impressive but at least it had a quite complete set with bosses even. And on top, a roster of characters each with their own gimmicks. That said, it for sure was an unpolished buggy mess though.
Yeah I definitely agree. I played this back when it was new and I thought it was really cool. There are definitely positive things to be said (although the character design is extremely inconsistent, especially in terms of quality). Just didn't have the tools back then that we do today when it comes to game development. Plus MIDIs would drastically reduce the file size (which was important because most people were still on dial-up, including me). The entire game and its assets is like 7MB lol.
Yeah it was impressive for the time. Especially considering the amount of animations that have to be programmed for each character and enemy. My only real complaint when I played it back in the day was that it was too hard and the artwork is really inconsistent
Hey I remember this game. The first thing I did was walk left and fell off the screen and died. Edit: It must have been further along than the opening screen.
I think it's not running right. Judging by the game's poor quality, it's speed might be tied to the CPU frequency. It might run better on a virtual machine with a slower emulated clock speed.

The art style looks soo awfull to be from a 2000's fangame, im sure they just could have used the X4-X5 Art style for the chars. And everything would have been allright

I will give it a try. I tried using a VM before but it was before I found the version that actually works
@@HyperDefective Try frequencies between 500-1000 MHz, that's what most PCs had at the time.
