    I ride all the time and have had a ton of flats. I’d add one caveat to this excellent video. DON’T carry a patched tube as your spare. When I get home, I promptly repair the replaced tube from my ride and swap it out with the NEW tube I used while on the road. I put the non punctured tube back in my carry bag. I was once stranded in the middle of nowhere because the tube patch failed and that’s not the place to discover this. Just my thoughts based on actual real life adventures.

      Just get yourself some airless tyres and you don't have to worry about flats ever again.

    • @jimsjacob
      @jimsjacob 2 роки тому +38

      @@leemanwrong Well, that's not 100% true. We've had to leave people behind for pickup cuz the sealant wasn't working. Been on the fence about going tubeless as a result. Plus, got a screw puncture that went right through my carbon Zipp 404, so I don't know if it would hold pressure. Still, tubeless is far more reliable
      Update : I misread that. You said airless, not tubeless. DOH!

      Lol I just use superglue and a piece of paper to patch the tires on my ebike. The rear tire is still holding after about a week, I just did the front tire today which I know should hold longer because the rear tire is where most of the weight is. I've changed that tube so many times now because the tires I've previously used wore out pretty quickly due to it not being flat like. I plan on just getting tannus armor for the rear wheel. Not only that but you can ride on it if you get a flat.

    • @leemanwrong
      @leemanwrong 2 роки тому +2

      @@jimsjacob I use Tannus airless tyres which have been amazing. They are quite firm so they give a bit of a rough ride on bad roads but not having to worry about flats makes it totally worth it.

      Their method for "vulcanizing" (it's not vulcanizing, words mean something) is simply wrong. The "fluid" they are talking about is, wait for it, "glue", to be precise, it's contact cement. To properly "fluid" sorry, glue something with contact cement, you need to glue BOTH surfaces, at least they got the let it get tacky part correct.

    I noticed that I had a puncture in the front tyre of my Moulton on the way back from the supermarket. Prepared as always I whipped out my brand new, unused Park Tool puncture repair kit and prepared the inner tube for a patch. Opening the tube of rubber adhesive compound I found the tube to be sealed, but completely empty, In the manufacturing process something had obviously gone wrong. Fortunately on this occasion I had a spare inner tube, which saved the day. I decided to go further up the food chain of puncture repair kits and bought the highly recommended Rema TT02 kit. This is my second one and Rema are at the top of their game as they fill their adhesive compound tubes with more than air! You actually get the adhesive!

    Thank you for a great more video. I had a suggestion about patching, i normally do all steps as you mentioned above but an step further, that is ; before applying the patch on the inner tube i inflate the tube to a diameter equal to the bore diameter of tire itself, then apply the patch, push the patch by fingers and wait for about one minute، then deflate the tube and insert it as you mentioned.
    This minimizes the stretching of the patch while inflating the tube with high psi and prevent it from detaching and lengthens patch stability. 👍

    Thank you for great video! Another small tip is always placing tube valve somewhere under the middle of the tire label when initially installing the tube. When you find a puncture and align punctured tube valve to the middle of tire label then you know where on the tire or rim a place possible puncture cause is to inspect it more thoroughly.

    Great tips!
    Great video: well shot, well edited, well directed, very well presented. Also no waffle or padding in the narrative, just straight to the point. Thank you very much. Though I'm a very experienced biker, I still picked up some fantastic useful tips like
    - the 'crosshairs' marking the hole, and not just the 'ring' which I'd been doing which became obscured by the glue
    - the leaving of the plastic sheath on the outside of the patch to reduce friction on the patch (I always worried that it would 'pull' the patch off, how wrong was I!)
    - not inflating the tube to usual pressure outside the tyre. I long suspected this might be the case where the bond is weakened due to no support from the tyre, but wasn't sure. Thank you too for confirming that for me.
    Overall, excellent, excellent video.
    Why can't all '"How to" videos be as overall well-done as this??!!

    My husband bought a CCM repair kit. It has been awhile since he has had to buy one, so of course the black patch outlined in orange was new to him. The kit came with absolutely no instructions. Good thing we found your Video which showed which part of the patch should be facing upward. He had it the opposite way. Perhaps CCM didn't include instructions because they just assume that everyone has access to the Internet to look for instructions. My husband commented that if someone got a tire puncture while biking on a trail in the middle of the woods then instructions would come in handy! Mind you, CCM might suggest you use your smart phone to find a video such as yours, but, we are the lonely few that does not have or use a smart phone. Thanks for letting my vent! I plan to write to CCM to ask why instructions weren't included in this repair kit.

    Nice video!!
    Didn't know the trick of spreading the grue with the foil of the patch, very clever!
    Most of my punctures are the "snake bite" type, some times they are so big even the biggest patches don't hold enough the high pressure the road tire needs and I have to discard the tube wasting a patch in the process...

    • @lucianonarno1408
      @lucianonarno1408 8 років тому +2

      If you're getting a lot of 'snake bites' try putting a little more air in the tire that you're used to, say you normally use 60 psi for example, try with 70 psi and see if that works. Safe riding!

    • @lucianonarno1408
      @lucianonarno1408 8 років тому +2

      Snake bites (aka pinch punctures) occur when the tube gets pinched between the tire and rim. More pressure in the tire should help prevent these. Sorry if you already all this info, if you don't maybe I helped :)

    This video is so well presented that I have to comment where an improvement can be made: at 4:15 use water as the solvent nothing else. Rubber is hydrophobic and those loose rubber bits just float away as if they are repelled by the water. And rubber dries instantly. No need for anything more volatile. Thank you for putting so much information so concisely! Brilliant!

If the hole is on the inner circumference of the tube as mine is today then it's likely due to an inadequate rim strip. If it's on the outer circumference then it is likely from a foreign object such as glass, sharp stone or splinter.

    this is a really good video.
    what Calvin doesn't address:
    -there are places on a tube that are difficult to get a good seal. these include the seams, and then those seam-like tire markings and machine marks. try the best you can to get the patch solidly on the hole.
    -getting the edges of the 2-part patches (where you put the cement on first) to seal properly is important, and sometimes tricky.
    Final thought: I'm playing around with RTV -blue silicone gasket maker as a way to seal the edges of leaky tire patches. I THINK it just may work. Currently, pre-massive-inflation-that's-coming, the stuff is about $4 per tube, and it just takes a small amount.

    Calvin, what would you do if you discovered the patch had not adhered along part of the edge, as shown at 5:55? Would you add glue to the non-adhered portion, or would you remove the patch and start over?

      Just cut out the whole patch and use a bigger one to cover the new hole.

      There's nothing wrong with patching the tube multiple times, as long as you know how to patch a tube prooerly. I've used tubes that have around 10 patches, not the Park Tools patches definitely, they fail, they're soft and the glue is weak.

    Thorne Resistant tubes are the answer and sure some complain about the weight but its a bicycle and its all about fun and exercise so what a little extra weight.

    Another hot tip… When inspecting the inside tire surface for the foreign object, wear bike gloves to avoid getting cut by something sharp!

    Superb video. In my case with the vulcanizing patch I remove the film backing after pressing the tyre for an hour in the vice. Then I sprinkle it with French chalk which is known in America as 'tire talc'. The removal of the backing film requires 'technique', and I was stopped in my tracks to see that not only did CJ not remove it, but he gave a reason with his customary nonchalant authority. If anyone else had left the backing film in place, I would have remonstrated, but who in the world can go up against Park Tool? By the way I have never seen a tyre repaired on such a spotless bench in such bright light!

    I've never known about those TB-2 tire boots, very cool! In the past I've used a slice of a NYC metrocard (like a much thinner, flexible credit card) works well to hold a blown-out tire in place. A suggestion for those in other cities who might have similar cards in their wallets/purses.
