    Presumably still make motor sailers for the ultimate in efficiency with that. Interesting World "Nordhavn" to go with so many others of course Serene comes to mind. Some amazingly great UA-cam channels using Nordhavn so no shortage of resources to help along in what used to be quite the lonely journey really. #that_was_a_priceless_steinway

    Gorgeous boat but there are a few elements that surprise me. The salon doesn’t seem that much bigger than the 41 and there isn’t much natural light in the galley but I guess that is the compromise with pilot house. For me the midship cabin is the master and not being able to sit up in bed not something I’d expect in a 51 foot boat. Still the pilot house area with that couch and the watch berth all awesome. Going to make a great passage maker. Really looking forward to the sea trials. Thanks for sharing with us.

    Great walk around vids, Mark and Renee. The standard of finish and all the nice to have stuff just great and the size of those bathrooms - wow. I got a real laugh out of your dustbuster on the bridge - it reminded me of the long hours spent "watchkeeping" at altitude, over the middle of the Pacific, watching the skipper trying to stay awake by using a soft bristle paintbrush to clear all the dust and crumbs from inflight meals and out of the little channels and crevices between radios and various other black boxes. Bon voyage to Rhodes - slow travel at 10 knots or less will beat the hell out of rushing everywhere at 500+.

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  4 місяці тому +1

    Very nice. Transatlantic range. Impressive.
    It’d be interesting to see if running one engine at a time, and then alternating to balance hours, you could get your gph even lower. Running a higher load can let the engines run more efficiently, and still maintain your 7 knots.
    I do really like the Nordhavn’s, but I’ve also recently discovered Berings, and am quite torn between the two. Although Bearing doesn’t build below a 62 I believe.

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  4 місяці тому +1

      I do like Berings but prefer fibreglass to steel. Steel starts to rust the day it is exposed to the air. Moisture is also a potential issue. There is no shaft brake so running one engine not good for the one NOT running in that scenario. At 11-1200 rpm total consumption less than 10 LPH for 7kts so pretty impressive…yet to be verified

    I think I spotted a Vesper Cortex system on the bridge - a great example of New Zealand innovation (sold to Garmin in 2022). I suggest adding a corded handset to the bridge so a) it’s always powered and b) doesn’t get lost. As a future video suggestion - how about a rundown on the tools and spares you will set up for your voyaging?

    The Webasto heater....it's not using that much fuel. $3/hr is waaay too high. A gallon per 24 hours is more like it. Be sure to get some rebuild parts to carry with you. Gaskets, igniter, that sort of thing. It's easy to rebuild but if you don't have parts, you're screwed. Butler-Technik in England has great service and world-wide shipping. Not saying it’s Covid but since then it has been much more difficult and seems to be the continuing excuse from suppliers

    Personally I'd swap the names of the vip guest and master cabin. Guest room looked much nicer and not sure how noisy the master will be underway at the front of the boat with all the waves hitting it...

      @user-lx7mr5vc2t 4 місяці тому +2

      Yes you are correct. It is noisy and you feel like you are in a roller coaster! Fun though!
      Even if we swapped cabins if we were underway doing a crossing with friends I would want them to have the best experience and be in the mid ship cabin!

    • @AwanuiNZ

      It is a bit bumpy up front but hey I can sleep anywhere. I think we may move to the mid cabin if we have a really extended period on our own. Storage in master is so good so with guests aboard we need to be there otherwise we would be continuously moving things around to accomodate them. The ride in the midship cabin is amazing!

    First off, great job Renee keeping your dad on point! Nice looking boat- best wishes for you and the family as you travel on it. I am new to the channel,so I am not sure of where you will be traveling with it, but the one thing that surprised me was there were no screens on the doors. That is one thing I would have liked, never know what the bug situation is in other ports. A little disappointed that there is no small window in the engine room door so you can see what is going on before you open the door, as I have seen on other Nordhavn’s.

    Great tour, beautiful boat. Will be perfect for the long passages you have planned (talking about the great loop).
    Just a tip, if you want to prevent problems with the toilet, do as they do in Turkey, no paper in the toilet. Just put a small garbabe can next to the toilet, that is where all the paper goes. Have to get used to it, but the last thing you want is to take apart the toilet when you are out at sea. Also, before flushing fill up that bowl with a lot of water, it will save your macerator.
    Remember; no toilet on board and you will be very unhappy !😀
    Btw, what is the reason for using the guest cabin as the main cabin ? Most people don't like the noise of the waves in the forward cabin and on top of that the vertical movement in the forward cabin is substantially more than the cabin in the center of the boat. Any particular reason ?
    As for the small space in the forward cabin ? Don't worry, women always come up with something to store there. Don't ask how, just accept it. 😅

      @AwanuiNZ  3 місяці тому +1

      Good morning….yip wifey has gone to that process but not me yet. Still thinking about it after the same process for 62 years! Bigger cabin with much more storage. We tried the mid ships cabin and other than ride at sea love the forward cabin. The view through the windows from bed and close access to pilot house are too good. Maybe on a long passage we will change.

    I've seen some tours of the N41s which come from the same factory. But am I the only one that feels the fit and finish on N51 is just on another level?
    I'm not saying N41 is not good enough but N51 is just better.

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  4 місяці тому +2

      Honestly they finish all their boats to an exceptional level. I think it is just that there is more boat so it stands out more. From the factory perspective they use exactly the same techniques on the 51 as they do on the 41 so to them the quality of build was going to be just as good as Hull 33 on the 41. They absolutely pay attention to every detail and are so proud of their workmanship

    lovely lady, wishing you guys lots of safe miles on her. One thing is absolutely wrong! An EPIRB NEEDS TO BE FREE FLOATING. In case of sinking, it will never float up as it is locked inside the boat. Many yachtsmen make this error. EPIRB needs to be on the outside that's why it is watertight.

    • @AwanuiNZ

    If you expect to spend any meaningful time running from the fly bridge, why wouldn’t you equip the upper helm , as you’ve done in the pilot house, with a Stidd helm chair ? The difference between Stidd and what I believe is a basic Pompanette is significant. After spending no doubt a substantial amount to build such a special yacht, a few thousand more to upgrade to Stidd seems like a worthwhile investment.
