2 out of 7 attempts to make an online/mobile version of Yu-Gi-Oh! is not a commendable track record lmao

They literally announced this during Pecorine's Birthday, what the heck crunchyroll shame on you! I've seen gacha games die left and right but some had at least put their games into "life-support". But no, Crunchyroll just had to shut it down out of nowhere. Hoping cygames can pick this game up, or at least get a trusted publisher but this is all unlikely. Condolences to fans of Priconne's global server.

I thought Princess connect would be too big to fail. It even has a nice 2 season Anime but somehow Crunchyroll dropped the Ball and instead of adapting like Nexon did with Blue Archive or decreasing the free gems to push players to the cash shop, they basically just gave up with little effort. It doesn't help that players were discouraged by their record but shutting down an IP this big just proves players right and shows they know nothing about long term business.

Priconne was not my first CR game, I did play just a little bit of the Overlord game, but this was the only CR game I invested so much time into since it first launched. It made me get into the anime, and it has become one of my top 10 because I absolutely love the world and the characters. The reason why FGO is an outlier is likely because of Type-Moon having a big stake in the project.
Most of revenue from outside FGO like figurines and posters are probably mostly going to TM rather than Aniplex. The reason why Aniplex treats FGO different is because want to remain the publisher for all the future TM games and anime. For example, Mahoyo, a TM game, was just released worldwide under Aniplex. Pretty sure they want to remain on good terms for the Fate-Extra remake and the potential lostbelts anime

    • @otakuspirit

      @dark_rit Рік тому +17

Yeah, FGO just expanded their global servers to many more countries too. Sure, most the money comes in from the JP server for FGO because they have the most players on the JP server and many of them are whales when it comes to spending for new servants. Not to mention actively hiring more people for the game staff right now. Aniplex does want to maintain a good working relationship with type-moon though because if it goes sour, type moon can enter talks with any number of publishers who would love to publish Fate franchises to make money.

I wonder if maybe they needed to pay a continuous licensing fee to CY for PriConne… Because I have a hard time imagining that this game would be losing money just from ongoing costs (okay, to be fair, I'm on JP and always have been, so maybe it's not as popular here?) If I'm running a business, I would feel hesitant to cut off anything that is not literally in the red, since, first, it might be temporary, and second, you pay in brand recognition and customer good will, as mentioned. So unless if they need the resources for something else, or their management has some super short-term KPIs (or just bad), I have to imagine that they're actually losing money, potentially sizable, to this. That said, it still feels weird that a game that is still doing quite well in JP would just fail so quickly…

  • @Nauibotic
    @Nauibotic Рік тому +54

The biggest thing about this EoS is that the JP side is going strong as is KR, CH, and even THAI. I could understand if the whole worldwide service of the game is shutting down due to low sales, but its not. They also CHOSE to announce it two days before April Fools, give us a one month notice only, AND announce on the day of the Mascot's birthday, which is such abhorrent bad foresight that saying I can't trust them with any future gacha responsibilities is an understatement. At least with like Dragalia Lost, another Cygames, they gave their player base a six months advance notice, still made enough events, and also concluded their story. Eng won't get that for Priconne now.
As much as people are saying "go jump to JP". I don't read/speak japanese, I don't want to download an emulator, and I don't want to start from scratch. I literally have four characters (Ram, Rem, Uzuki, and Rin (IM@S)) that you CANNOT get anymore in the JP server. That was the whole point for me to stay in the ENG because I've grown to love the collab characters too. Two years of work on a currently 5 year strong JP game going to complete waste is just the final nail in the coffin for my opinion of CR.

I saw the news and could tell whoever wrote the blogpost was sad about it getting shut down as well. Precon was such a big title imo, I knew a vtuber who played it, some of my friends did, and although I never did, I didn't realize it was a CR game because of how popular it seemed.
For future reference for mobile players, when you play a Gacha, despite how much you enjoy it, look at the company who published it as well as how much traction it's making. Used to play a mobile game called Heir of Light and spent probably close to 1k shortly after it released. I started to see signs that it was going to be all too popular so I made the hard decision to leave and while it's still running, it's littered with ads and 0 direction.
Mihoyo I'd say is a good company. I grew up playing their games (No Honkai Impact 3 wasn't their first) and the only reason they shut down one of their mobile games, Houkai Gakuen 2, was because it truely wasn't popular in the US (still available in JP and CN though) which makes sense as I've never really met anyone who knows what that game was.

I tried to get into Shadow, cuz I love the franchise but...immediately deleted it. Gameplay was so boring and not challenging enough (technically not Crunchy's fault), but knowing who's running the EN server was the nail in the coffin.
A friend of mine who works for the company told me rumors circulating of the shutdown after one year cuz it wasn't "earning enough". Oh and saying that, it's exactly what you said, shareholders and top brass want to see "consistent growth" which...yea that's not how gacha works. Ya got rise and dip, typical of how gacha works. But true to how American companies run games (looking at you Activision), they want a massive cash in, and then bail when it's not making money day by day.

The first summer event i put money on it to get the summer karyl and i used to buy the monthly pack but i stopped about a year ago. It's funny, I played Final Fantasy Record Keeper for 3 or 4 years and when that shut down last year it sucked but it didn't hit me as hard as this, it's probably the strength of the characters like you said, I haven't even watched the anime but Yukari and Mitsuki are just too good. Mitsuki barely shows up in any events probably because Kotono Mitsuishi is too busy or something, but I was excited to see she finally got her 6 star upgrade in Japan and even though it was 3 years away I took a mental note of it.

Well, release the usual swimsuit, maiden temple suit outfits etc. The game was fun at first ... then they introduced skip tiickets, content became rare but we had a new outfit for miaksa everyweek ( with blatant powercreep). I played Princess Connect! Re:Dive probably for a couple of months at some point, can't really remember when this was, but I took a long break from it and only recently came back just for a little bit when one Twitch streamer who I follow on Discord wanted to try out the game, and that reminded me "Oh yeah, I could check it out for a bit.". As a side note, it might tell something about the duration of my break that I had enough stuff in the in-game mail that I was able to do about 300 pulls on a banner when I returned. There was about 45k worth the gacha currency if I recall correctly.
Maybe it's because I wasn't active in the game for such a long time that this doesn't personally hit me so hard but I can certainly understand that players are sad and upset. There are some characters who I liked, and earlier today I even went back to the game so I could record probably about an hour or so worth of video of the game so I'd have at least something to remember from it when it's gone.
Just because I'm not as heart broken about the end of service as active players are doesn't mean I can't imagine how they are feeling right now. All I'd have to do is to imagine my currently active gacha game, Arknights, facing the same end and I can absolutely imagine how I'd feel about it. I've been playing Arknights for over 3 years (started at the end of January 2020, a few weeks after global launch), and I don't think I've played any other gacha game where I remember as many playable characters by their names (including Azur Lane, which I played for several years before I got burnt out from the end game, and soon after found Arknights) as I do in Arknights. Not just their names but their traits, talents, skills and in some cases some of their information from their profiles or voice lines. For a few of them I even remember when or how I got them, or even how many pulls I did for them.
If I was being told Arknights was shutting down (the global version) then it'd be like suddenly losing 3+ years of my life. Not just that but I'd be losing the excitement I had for the upcoming events and content, and I'd have less to talk about the game in some communities I've found out thanks to the game. Yeah, it's not like I'd have to leave those communities even if that happened but communities can make games so much more fun when you are aware of other players who are into same things as you are.
I don't doubt I might find another gacha game I'd start playing as my main gacha game but out of all the gacha games I've played or tried out, I'd say Arknights is probably my favorite.
The point is that I believe I can imagine how the Princess Connect! Re:Dive players might be feeling now. No one wants to lose something they have spent a lot of time and effort into over a long time period. It's sad news and I don't really have any words to offer that might make those players feel better. I know any live service game can't last forever but that doesn't make it any easier when a game you greatly enjoy gets EoS notice. I don't really have anything else to say so I'll just leave it here.

Re: Dive that will be shut down on April 30, 2023. This is a popular mobile game that was extremely successful and garnered a massive fanbase that was loyal to the game.
One of the main producers of the game is Crunchyroll, which means they have control over the game when it comes to non-Japanese servers. In the announcement post, the platform didn’t particularly state a reason that was directly responsible for the removal of the game. This certainly upset the entire fanbase, since a well-performing game was removed without them receiving a proper explanation.

Surprised to see that even DanMachi game was part of it before (which leaves a bad taste to me). Good thing I never played any of their games, as I only play FGO mainly which I have confidence Aniplex won’t f*k this up, else they want to face hell in reality and cyberspace. Again, my condolences to all Precone global gamers here...

God. I got burned so hard by Magireco. They ran two of the most anticipated banners, waited for them to end, and then announced it would be shutting down. Like, actual scam activity.

Yes shutting down one of the most popular Gacha game seems a bad move for a company. They are too impatient and didn't think the future upcoming updates will make them more money. PriConne is one of the loved games brought out by Crunchyroll and they are going to shut it down is really a bad move

This is the first time I've heard the Crunchyroll does this kind of thing I've been playing Eminence of Shadow now for a long time. I know they're making a buttload of money off that game that's probably why they haven't shut it down. You're absolutely right we put a lot into our games. I'm definitely not picking up any of those others from Crunchyroll

I got into the game and the anime was really good

Priconne was definitely fun. I played it for about six months pretty casually.
I've played a lot of mobile gacha games over the years so here's my take on this. The two year cycle is typically for cheap gachas. Companies spit them out like clockwork every two years after shutting the old one down in order to milk whales. It's best to avoid them and stick with notable titles from reliable companies like Epic Seven.
That said, Priconne did not seem like it would suffer that fate. While it wasn't making a lot of money it seems like the shutdown came early due to the economy. EVERY company worldwide is taking measures to weather this terrible economic period. This has hit the tech and entertainment sectors especially hard.
Personally, I'm taking a break from mobile gacha games this year. They are addictive and time consuming. I may give Valiant Force 2 a try because I like the dev studio but that's it.

Figured I'd add a minor correction about one of the vaulted games, Grand Summoners. The game is still alive with 0 involvement from Crunchy Roll. It's been a joke on the GS discord for a while that GS was the only game to survive CR, and that still stands true. I don't know if CR is just bad at managing their games or if they just have predatory contracts with the companies, but when GS and CR were partnered back in 2019-2020 a lot of units got rushed because they were highly anticipated.

Ok, crunchyroll is definitely to blame for most of this but i doubt Cygames is feeling too bad about it. Cygames recently dropped another one of their big global gachas late last year being Dragalia Lost (Nintendo x Cygames), which makes me worried for all other Global Cygame gachas that are still running. Also Cygames still has the JP server of Priconne running and they always seem to make their gachas and care more directed towards the JP audience anyway.

@@redrose1179 Honestly, I don't think it would have made them as much as we expect. Compared to a game like FGO, which is stinginess incarnate, Cygames gachas are almost all very generous. At least with GBF with them running on the same server, there is no foresight, meanwhile with Priconne the only people who whale are new players who want to get caught up quickly, but the entire game is structured in such a way that it's designed to retain players over a longer period.
It's sad, but I think if CR are going to be this ruthless about profits (and spend so little effort promoting/advertising the game, running livestreams etc) then this was always bound to happen.

Revue Starlight Relive is a more niche title than Princess Connect, and so far, it's still going strong over three years and counting.
FGO is going to hit it's fifth year in NA and doesn't look like it'll go away anytime soon.
Azur Lane and Blue Archive are looking good, too.

Thank you for covering this. I was honestly pissed when I found out about the closing of Priconne Global. For context, I came across the game a couple of years before the game came out for global and I found out that it's Japan only so I was bummed and hoping that one day it comes to global. So, when the global version of Priconne came out, I was super excited, but then I notice it was publish by Crunchyroll Games which game me red flags as I had not too long had played the Overlord game that they were publishing the global version for. So, I was trying to give them the benefit of a doubt that with this one it will last for a long while, but I didn't spend any money on the game cause of the lingering red flag that it was Crunchyroll Games. So, sure enough, when this happen it made me mad because I was losing a game that I waited for so long for a global version for but upset that the game I was waiting for was picked up by a company I didn't trust with mobile games. I really do feel Priconne would have done much better in the west under a different western publisher. I really do hope Priconne has a happy story like in Danmemo situation where the global version gets picked up by another company. After this shit that they have done to their mobile games especially with Priconne, I refuse to play anymore of their games and I was even looking at the Eminence in Shadow but not anymore. I also refuse to subscribe to their anime streaming platform. I do not want to give Crunchyroll any of my money whether it's through their published games or streaming platform as they have left me this bitter cause of what they keep doing to good mobile games.

Take this with huge, and I mean HUGE grain of salt, but a rumour I've seen regarding why priconne got shutdown was actually because Cygames doesn't want to associate themselves with CR anymore. Now I know this is a stretch but hear me out, the main reason apparently was because of how CR notoriously handled Street Fighter and because of that Cygames have decided to cut all ties with them.

FGO is only an 'oddity' because it has a larger fanbase + it is more difficult to obtain characters. NA received the pity system early sure, but it's still more costly compared to Priconne. Priconne showered you with jewels. I stopped playing Priconne for months. When I came back and I was able to pity NY! Kyaru. The game is very F2P friendly, but it definitely translates to lower sales.

The one nice thing about fgo when it comes to getting saint quartz in a F2P experience is that you don't need to roll multiple copies of characters like you might in other gacha games. You get one copy of an SSR servant, usually that is enough. They also don't make old servants obsolete by pushing heavy powercreep like some gachas out there. To top it all off, it is possible to borrow units from whales that can beat some hard fights by themselves in the story.
