Nice choice. Speaking of Santana, I remember I bought Moonflower double LP and went with it to a big basketball game, in a huge crowd I was afraid I''ll bring back home just pieces of plastic. Luckily, two LPs got to my home undamaged and boy listening to them was a great joy.
Hey, Pete... Thanx so much for showcasing Santana, an ensemble that is truly greater than the sum of their parts whose best stuff is always ambitious and challenging, a fascinating band-----I absolutely adore Zebop and Beyond Aopearances man!... What incredibly LIVELY discs they are, filled with outstanding performances(especially those instrumentals) ---both don't get enuff luv... ... Take Care, Ghostrider Rick
Thanks for this ranking by one of my favorites for more than 50 years. Keep up the great work, Pete, though I am still catching up on all the shows you did last week through the weekend. Thanks again.
A band that still kills it live to this day. Saw them and the Doobie Brothers in August 2019. Both bands were great but Santana was ON FIRE (both the band and the man himself)
@@thomasbeck2934 Same here! I went straight to bed afterwards 😂 I went with my dad and we got super lucky because Santana and the Doobie Brothers played one night and then the NEXT NIGHT, Heart and Joan Jett were playing at the exact same venue. So we made a little 3 day trip out of it. Both shows and all acts were fantastic.
60s - Santana 70's - Moonflower - I love Abraxas and III, but this is the first album I had at age 17. Love the studio and live element. Especially love She's Not There and Europa. Great live album also. 80's - Shango 90's - Milagro 2000's - I do not have any!
Santana 4 is really really good. IMO. I play it quite often. SUPERNATURAL sold 28 million worldwide. That’s Psychotic ! Boatload of $$$$. Lol. Thanks PETE 💯👍
The run from "Amigos" through "Shango" is by far my favorite era of the band. Greg Walker, Alex Ligtertwood, Tom Coster, Alan Pasqua, David Margen, Graham Lear...and...and...and... Untouchable.
Caravanserai, Welcome, Barboletta (untypical album, highly underrated with B. Miles), I like those albums very much. My all-time favorite one is Carlos Santana and Buddy Miles Live (from 1972). Influences of Rock, Jazz and Funk come in a soulful way together. Many great musicians on stage, the setting of drums and percussion is outstanding. There are many great Santana live-albums, but no one got this special kind of energy that blows you just away. The opener of the record is a statement in itself: “Lava” written by John MCloughlin. There is the best version of “Evil Ways” I have ever heard. The last song is an incredible rock - funk -jazz - session that goes on over 20 minutes.
Along with Queen first band got into.Have most of 70's albums love the Greg Rolie period. My sister bought Moonflower in late 70's still love that album.
Must admit I've only ever had compilation albums. Love some of his stuff, especially Europa, what a tune. Big Clapton influence on his playing, Peter Green as well.
My favorite Santana tunes are all instrumental and from these albums in the video: From SANTANA III: Batuka/No one to depend on (ok, some vocals here but essentially instrumental) From MILAGRO: Red Prophet From SANTANA IV: Fillmore East
Hey Pete, greetings from Germany. Here is my ranking: 60’s Santana 70’s Abraxas / Inner Secrets 80’s Beyond Appearances 90’s Supernatural 2000’s Shaman 2010’s Santana IV Like your ranking shows. Can you do this for THRESHOLD ?
My all-time personal favorite Santana album is "Caravanserai" which was released in October,1972. Sadly, Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon left Santana after finishing the album. Rolie didn't like the Spiritual direction the band was taking. As a result, Rolie and Schon did not tour with Santana during the American and European Tour to promote the album from October,1972 ~ December,1972.
I enjoy every period of Santana's eclectic career, so there were some tough choices here. But these are the ones I landed on. '60s - Santana '70s - Inner Secrets (Greg Walker is my favorite Santana vocalist, and this is my favorite studio album with Greg) '80s - Zebop! '90s - Supernatural '00s - Shaman '10s - Santana IV
The only Santana cd I have is Latin Rock Fusions which is a great compilation by a company called Charly Records, but it is not part of the official discography.
Remember your recent video about bands that are huge but you just don’t get it? Yeeeaaah, Santana is in that list for me. I know, he and Schon are guitar legends, but as much as I tried, I just don’t could never get into their songs. 😞
I'm a big Jonathan Richman fan, and there's this live album of his where he kind of takes the mick out of Santana: if you know the Richman Classic 'I'm Straight', Santana is kind of like the 'hippie Johnny' in the track. But early on Santana definitely had something - if I still prefer Fleetwood Mac and Zombies originals. But Santana's albums were so varied, in terms of being different to each other, got me thinking, I don't know if SOT has done anything like this, but how about artists who have made albums across different genres, but they are - both, or more - still brilliant. Or how about a feature on the acts that have made the most amazing albums and what those albums were? Counting down to which act has made the most brilliant albums? Or the real dark horse albums within bands' catalogues, that were overlooked but are still great today. And progressive/psych folk would be a good album countdown, stuff like Forest, Roy Harper, Mellow Candle, Comus, Pentangle, Tyrannosaurus Rex, a lot of brilliant albums in that genre. In terms of artists I'd love to see featured on the album countdowns, how about Richard Thompson, that's quite a catalogue, and some of it really rocks, The Pretty Things too. Or a big favourite of Floyd and Zep, Roy Harper (again)? Or Jonathan Richman himself. Anyway, enjoying the countdowns and agreed with Caravan and Tull and Yes and Sones number ones - as I often do agree with SOT - though think Caravan's superb debut is underrated. As is Too Old to Rock'n' Roll and Broadsword by Tull, and Undercover by the Stones. Keep on rockin!
70 Super close but I'll take Caravanserai 80 Hmm... Blues For Salvador 90 Milagro 00 Shaman by default 10 Africa Speaks - check out "Blue Skies" for a dirty vintage jam. Also for 70s is the live release Lotus.
60s self titled, 70s marathon, 80s Shango, 90s spirits dancing in the flesh 00s shaman 10s Santana 4 the reunion album with the original band this wasn't easy so hard to pick one and just a small mention to Alexander ligertwood he's my favorite vocalist for Santana

I've been waiting this since subscribing.
I love seeing interviews with Carlos Santana. He’s very cool and articulate about music and its spiritual and cosmic aspects. Great episode, Pete!

I notice nobody brings up Borboletta from the 70's.Pretty good album and quite underrated.Amigos is just as strong !
Borboletta is a fave of mine. Definitely underrated.
A band that still kills it live to this day. Saw them and the Doobie Brothers in August 2019. Both bands were great but Santana was ON FIRE (both the band and the man himself)
Saw that tour as well! Left the show exhausted!!

The only one I have is the "Santana Brothers" album. Killer instrumental album!
Thanks for mentioning, just heard, sounds real good.
Thanks Pete!
Can't wait for the "Top Ten Metal Church songs" .
One of the most underated metal bands of all time.

Always had some love for the Marathon album from Santana.
Graham Lear was Gino Vannelli's drummer between 1974 and 1976
Amazing studio albums are Storm at sunup and The Gist of the Gemini
Popoff with Pardo tomorrow!
Santana IV "The Reunion" lp is totally🔥🔥🔥🔥. Great album, along with the Live album that followed it.
Must admit I've only ever had compilation albums. Love some of his stuff, especially Europa, what a tune. Big Clapton influence on his playing, Peter Green as well.
Caravanserai is the great album and is still one my all time favourites. The band didn't recover from the departure of Mike Shrieve
My favorite Santana tunes are all instrumental and from these albums in the video:
