  • For over 100 years, our equine companions have been getting us from A to B via their horsepower! Today, more lorries and horse trailers are on the road than ever before, but what really goes into building a transport that fits both horse and human?
We visited Oakley Horseboxes - one of the oldest and most recognised coachbuilders in the world!

What I love is the ability to check the temperature where the horses are. I don't think any of our custom van makers in the USA are doing this, though I could be wrong. Given the long distances & dramatic temperature changes we have (think: New England horse shipping south to Wellington), you'd think someone would have this going on! Cool vid.

Jenalee barnhill you have amazing trailers (floats) in the america. Our roads just wouldn't manage them. I am surpised how rare lorries are in the usa though.

These are bigger than my house omg.
    The real question is:
Will they be able to fit my obese appaloosa gelding?

Nice. Too rich for my blood. A long time a friend of mine who did not have a lot of money showed up at our new barn with the horse in a uhaul truck. Was a short ride. She rode in the box with him. And someone else drove. They put shavings down. It had it's own ramp, so loading no problem. 20 minute ride. Rolled up the door and rolled down the ramp. Piece of cake. I'm terrified of horse trailers. But I can drive a box truck. And I want to to be able to haul and travel with my horse eventually. People are building out all sorts of vehicles to live/travel in these days. What they are doing with box trucks is recessing the frame for the entrance to the living space in order to have cargo/front porch space. So I could buy the longest size used uhaul truck, 24 ft I think with an overhead compartment. Remove the roll up door. Recess the entrance wall 14 ft in. Leaving an 8 by 10 space to build living quarters and the over head space for a sleeping loft. Cut out a door so there is access to the cab. Cut out and install 2 windows. Then I have an 8 by 14 space left. frame out another wall recessed 2ft in for a Dutch door for the stall. And I've got a 2ft walkway still between end of the truck which can have another barrier or not at the tailgate. So basically my horse is right out my front door. And when the tailgate is open I have a little porch area I can sit and the horse can look out the Dutch stall door. And I can put in some kind of bracket on the sides to carry portable fencing even. And I can probably do it under 10k.
