The biggest benefit my Belgian father had, 35 years ago, was that diabetic products like jam were free and cheap available in the Netherlands but expensive and only available in the pharmacy in Belgium. We lived near Baarle and grocery shopping was cheaper in the Dutch stores because of the lower taxes, clothing sales were also cheaper because in the Netherlands shops are allowed to sell at the wholesale price, in Belgium you always need to sell with a profit.

You make such wholesome content Drew! Thank you very much for this! I love both Netherlands and Belgium a lot, such awesome people. Greetings from Serbia!
You’re in the Netherlands Drew? Come visit Groningen up north. This city is a student city since about a quarter of the population are students, some are international. On top of that, the city is not a tourist hotspot so if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle, Groningen city is the place to be. Finding a hotel would be difficult though, so I strongly recommend finding one in nearby Leeuwarden.
Understanding the city's layout is essential. It's not odd; it's simply a delineation, much like the city limit. I come from Philly, specifically South Philly. As you approach the city limit, just one house over, you'll find yourself in North Philly or Southwest Philly, depending on your location.
I love quirky places like Baarle, the king/queen of enclaves. There are lots of them in Europe, like Büsingen (Germany inside Switzerland), Campione d'Italia (Italy inside Switzerland), Llivia (Spain inside France), five German enclaves caused by the Belgian Vennbahn and a piece of Bosnia inside Serbia. There is even one here in Slovenia, a small piece of Croatia inside a Slovene village.
Fantastic Video!! Bram is fantastic and wearing a Brighton & Hove Albion FC T-shirt! I didn’t expect that as I’m a BHA FC myself!! I live in Aachen Germany that borders The Netherlands and Belgium! Vaalserberg also has three borders in one place. 🇩🇪🇧🇪🇳🇱🇪🇺
Drew, your videos are always so well edited, both informative, funny, touching, political when needed. And you have such a friendly and open way of handling the locals and people you meet. I'm a Belgian guy who met you in Prague this summer. I was kinda shy and didn't want to bother you, so I didn't keep you longer then a short chat and a selfie. But I was amazed by how friendly you were. Many thanks for visiting Baarle, greetings from Ghent! And lots of love to the dutch! 🇳🇱 🇧🇪
It’s terrific how well those kids are educated. Dutchies (and Belgians) between 10-12 years old speak English flawlessly, that’s stunning, they must have a very high (but difficult) level of education.
The 2 boys are my kids. They are American and we live abroad. The English they learned is from me. They only speak Dutch in school and learn france since they go to a Belgian school. I am proud of my boys English for having no teacher teach them. In our house it is dutch and English.
One important factor is that like in Scandinavia, in NL and Flanders TV programmes for all ages are shown in the original language so they watch a lot of US and British content in the original language, with subtitles in Dutch. Whereas in countries where the language is French, German, Spanish or Italian they don't as programmes and films are dubbed in the language of that country, so speakers of those languages tend not to have that advantage and their English is as a rule not as good as in Flanders, NL and Scandinavia. I'm pretty sure that in the French speaking part of Belgium they watch English language programmes on TV dubbed in French, hence you will meet francophone Belgians who don't speak English whereas pretty much all Flemish Belgians do speak English.
@@simonh6371 its true, but for childeren non-Dutch programs/movies actually are dubbed in Dutch in the Netherlands and Belgium. For Scandinavia I don't know.
When the gas prices were really high in the Netherlands. People that would live close to Baarle-Hertog would fill up their gas there since it would save you like €0,60 per liter, compared to Baarle-Nassau. Love from Brabant, the Netherlands!❤️
I was there two years ago, during the corona pandemic and it was really funny because Belgium and the Netherlands had quite different protection measures. Anyway, I enjoyed my time there. :)
Greetings from Cebu, Philippines! This particular video fascinated me so much! Thanks Drew for bringing geography, culture, geo-politics etc. into social media! I admire your bravery when you stayed in dangerous places! Stay safe always.
Imagine to have borders like the US and Mexico between them 😂. These kind of videos give me a warm feeling and should be an example for the rest of the world. How amazing is it to have such a great friendship between countries ❤
If you have the right surrounding conditions borders really don’t matter. You can live or work in any of the countries, pay with the same money regardless of your nationality, like the bar owner said, she doesn’t even know who is Belgian or Dutch. Since they speak the same language, the country you live is even more irrelevant, it only defines where you have to pay your taxes
@@SuperMistertoast Belgian Dutch and Netherlands Dutch is quite different though. Any Dutch and any Belgian will know within a second which country you're from.
I'm Belgian. What a great video! Baarle-Hertog is indeed a unique place on the map, but it shows that Belgians and Dutch people are really quite similar. Keep up the good video's, man!
French Fries are ok to order right? Only most vendors (snackbars) in both the Netherlands or Belgium don't actually have them. (French Fries are here in the Netherlands those very thin hardly baked fries you receive at some fast food restaurants).
I hope I am not late knowing you Drew. I am a fan for a month now and I am following you to all media. You are my inspiration. Ive watched like 200 plus videos of yours for a month now. Thank you! I want to travel the world too!

Recently visited the Netherlands and stayed in Amsterdam but we made it our mission to go to Baarle after watching this video! 2 hour trip from Amsterdam but it was so worth it to visit somewhere so unique and we even found Disco Nels bar!
I remember during covid seeing a report, that Zeeman had a red white ribbon halfway the store, and weren't allow to sell merchandise from the Belgian side.
Wow!! What a video! Amazing Video. Absolutely loved it. Thanks for bringing amazing stories for us Drew . This was a story which I would have probably never known if you hadn't uploaded this video. Thanks for the Amazing Content Drew.
Been there last 2019. Imagine yourself waking up in your bed in the Netherlands and taking a shower in Belgium then proceed to have your breakfast back again in the Netherlands and finally go to work in Belgium.
For anyone wondering why the majority of the Dutch and Belgian ppl speak very good English, it's because they get their first English lessons in kindergarten. The Netherlands is number 1 on speaking English for a country that don't have English as a native language. I believe Belgium is 3rd of 4rd on the list worldwide.
Also because Dutch is very close to English making it an easy language to learn. Dutch and Belgian people don't usually dub foreign movies so that helps too
Belgium as a whole is not so high up, but flanders is pretty much on par with the netherlands It's just that all the french-speakers drag the average level down a lot, french-speaking people are notoriously bad at english
@@ihakker1416 that's because Dutch and English are both Germanic languages, it's hard to learn when your main language is French as thats a Roman language (i think that's pretty obvious tho) another thing is, that Flemish people get pretty much forced to learn French in school, while the people in Wallonia get to choose wether they want to learn Dutch or not, if they also learned Dutch in kindergarten or elementary school they'd probably be much better at English aswell
I remember that during corona the Zeeman there could only sell shirts in a specific size because the other sizes were in the Belgian part and there the stores were closed due to covid
It's quite striking to me that the way you say Baarle, kind of sounds like parley.Couldn't be more fitting! I'm proud of my country (BE) and I have always lived close to the Dutch border. We tease each other, but in a way that family does. Never with ill intent, always with love
I'm from The Netherlands and I love the way you vlog this it's awesome vey interesting. We also have a place with 3 lands point The Netherlands, Belguim and Germany. Hope you can visit that too. Love you Drew and your Filipina gf and your little puppy♥️♥️♥️
These boys are my kids (Americans) They have only learned English from me at home. They go to a Belgian school and learn dutch and france. Thanks for the nice compliment to my kids.
I love stuff like this, at the dutch/belgian border its a mess at some places down south almost as bad as in Baarle. Keep up the great content and hope u enjoy your time in both countries.
Drew, this was so cool that you spended time in the south of Netherlands. Most people don't come there. First whit our red hair festival (I'm a dutch red one to) and now at Baarle Nassau. I see you had fun and was amazed by how things work there
I'm in Baarle-Nassau a few times each month for work. Sometimes I'm driving in both countries at the same time because the border splits the road in half. :) And as you have seen yourself, no issues with border crossings. Which would basically be impossible to guard anyway because there's so much border there. :P
Was there recently for the fireworks. When Autumn comes arround its nothing but queue's of people trynna buy fireworks. Fireworks arn't illegal in the Netherlands contrary to what your buddy said but Belgium's rules are way less strict so that is why that town is essentially known for its fireworks and nothing else to the people here. Thing is for us being in the EU we rarely cross real borders anyway so its kinda whatever since a border doesn't mean a lot to us anymore
I was there once with my Belgian relatives who live 30km from these two towns. They were nonchalant about this. I wished I knew how complicated their borders was. Many years later, I asked them to take me there again, they asked WHY?? For them there's nothing to see or do because they're like any other Belgian and Dutch towns. 😔
I was there back in 2010, and sure, it's a fascinating place for us geonerds! On the other hand, it's really just another small, sleepy town in the border region, without much to do... I think there would have been a realignment of the border a long time ago, were it not for the tourism revenue created by this weird situation - as the elderly gentleman in the street cafe correctly pointed out.
@@alyssavannasse1783 Well French isn't a native language to us, it's the same like saying "dont let the French try to speak Dutch", they wouldn't get a word out

I've always been so fascinated with Baarle, and I am so happy you've finally made a video on it! You made my day!
It was a really nice video! Baarle is surely one of the most interesting places in Europe. Keep up the great work! Greetings from Hungary! 🙂🇭🇺
Thanks mate! :)
I really enjoyed this video Drew. How fascinating. I’m so glad the bartender is doing better. Thanks for taking us along.

I just love this vlog. I’m so impressed on how clean that bar was! Love the old gal, thanks for sharing Drew.
When the gas prices were really high in the Netherlands. People that would live close to Baarle-Hertog would fill up their gas there since it would save you like €0,60 per liter, compared to Baarle-Nassau.
Love from Brabant, the Netherlands!❤️
They still do this here.
I was there two years ago, during the corona pandemic and it was really funny because Belgium and the Netherlands had quite different protection measures. Anyway, I enjoyed my time there. :)
Yuge confusion.
Greetings from Cebu, Philippines! This particular video fascinated me so much! Thanks Drew for bringing geography, culture, geo-politics etc. into social media! I admire your bravery when you stayed in dangerous places! Stay safe always.
We love our Dutch brothers and sisters ! grtz from Antwerp, Belgium
We love your fries too.🤣🤣🤣

This was really a big surprise seeing a video from you about Baarle nassau / hertog. keep up the good work !
Amazing story.....the highlight for me is that the old woman got better from her illness. I wish her many more years on earth with good health.
Hi Drew! Great video!! And so funny that you stayed over at my place (with Bram) without me being there. Next time i'll be there for sure!👍👍
Yes! Thank you anyways for amazing hospitality!!
9:17 see the sign with "vuurwerk"? That's Dutch for Fireworks, we Belgians like to buy them in the Netherlands (often illegal in Belgium :) )
@@SuperMistertoast Although to be honest, living in a place like that might blur the lines between the two dialects a bit lol
Imagine if North and South Korea has a border like this 💀
As a dutchman, i can stronly agree, that i love belgium and that our border is amazing
We love you too!
As a Flemish guy living near the Netherlands, I didn't even know about this town. Great episode!
I remember driving in this town and I received like 10 text messages from my provider; welcome to Belgium!
🤣
I'm Belgian. What a great video! Baarle-Hertog is indeed a unique place on the map, but it shows that Belgians and Dutch people are really quite similar. Keep up the good video's, man!
I'm so glad he gave a travel tip containing: "Don't call them French fries", since it triggers me a lot as a Belgian haha
French Fries are ok to order right? Only most vendors (snackbars) in both the Netherlands or Belgium don't actually have them. (French Fries are here in the Netherlands those very thin hardly baked fries you receive at some fast food restaurants).
American says like that. In United Kingdom - Chips.
They aren't called French fries...but french fries.
Frenching is the way of cutting, not where they're from.
@@MaDDeX93 Chips and "Fries" are different in the UK though. In general Chips are thick-cut, whereas "fries" are thin, American-style
but if fries could talk they’d speak French, right ?
I hope I am not late knowing you Drew. I am a fan for a month now and I am following you to all media. You are my inspiration. Ive watched like 200 plus videos of yours for a month now. Thank you! I want to travel the world too!
Just wow! And the most amazing segment was the one on which you encounter that nearly 96 years old rocking Lady at bar. She rocks💓
Amazing video, I look forward to visiting this place one day
I live on the border of the Netherlands and Germany in glanerbrug(Nederland) right next to gronau(duitsland) and the way the Belgians Co exists is so different to how we do it
O dat wist ik niet.. Hoe gaat het daar?
Recently visited the Netherlands and stayed in Amsterdam but we made it our mission to go to Baarle after watching this video! 2 hour trip from Amsterdam but it was so worth it to visit somewhere so unique and we even found Disco Nels bar!

“Work hard like i have since I was 13, and you will live to grow old.”
Bless her heart!
Ik denk 4de omdat noorwegen en zweden hoger zijn volgens mij
Also because Dutch is very close to English making it an easy language to learn. Dutch and Belgian people don't usually dub foreign movies so that helps too
Belgium as a whole is not so high up, but flanders is pretty much on par with the netherlands
It's just that all the french-speakers drag the average level down a lot, french-speaking people are notoriously bad at english
@@ihakker1416 that's because Dutch and English are both Germanic languages, it's hard to learn when your main language is French as thats a Roman language (i think that's pretty obvious tho)
another thing is, that Flemish people get pretty much forced to learn French in school, while the people in Wallonia get to choose wether they want to learn Dutch or not, if they also learned Dutch in kindergarten or elementary school they'd probably be much better at English aswell
not in kindergarten. don't overexxagerate lol
Thanks for promoting the kingdom of Belgium. Everything you said is correct. Hope you had fun.
My grandparents live here, I'm 50% dutch, 50% belgian, mom is belgian, dad was dutch. story checks out. I owe my life thanks to little Baarle.
I remember that during corona the Zeeman there could only sell shirts in a specific size because the other sizes were in the Belgian part and there the stores were closed due to covid
I visited my friend in Baarle Hertog in 2016 but didn't manage to explore more of this unique municipality. Thanks Drew for doing this video
We also have one town in two countries - Latvia and Estonia. The town is called Valka in Latvian and Valga in Estonian.
On the border of Poland and Czech Republic, we have also town located in two countries. It is Cieszyn
It's quite striking to me that the way you say Baarle, kind of sounds like parley.Couldn't be more fitting! I'm proud of my country (BE) and I have always lived close to the Dutch border. We tease each other, but in a way that family does. Never with ill intent, always with love
Beautiful !
Cheers From Laeken audherghem brussels Belgium.
I'm from The Netherlands and I love the way you vlog this it's awesome vey interesting. We also have a place with 3 lands point The Netherlands, Belguim and Germany. Hope you can visit that too. Love you Drew and your Filipina gf and your little puppy♥️♥️♥️

These kids english is impressive! Looks like a great place for families and older people
These boys are my kids (Americans) They have only learned English from me at home.
I see you had fun and was amazed by how things work there
The lady running the bar was absolutely fantastic! What a neat person!
I'm in Baarle-Nassau a few times each month for work. Sometimes I'm driving in both countries at the same time because the border splits the road in half. :)
And as you have seen yourself, no issues with border crossings.
I love the old lady❤ she is so precious, I hope her health is ok🙏
Drew Binsky filming one video in two different country’s at the same time. I’m from Netherlands I’m glad you enjoyed.😊
as someone who is half Dutch half Belgian i love the existence of this place is just fun
It's lovely over there on a Sunday, that's when the town really comes alive when outsiders visit the town to have a great time.
It's the same since the northern part of Belgium speaks dutch
A really cool video, especially the interview with the old lady.
Brilliant work Drew.
Intresting and unique. Thanks Drew for covering this township.
Im amazed by the english spoken by the children,.
Also, the EU surely made this whole ordeal much easier to manage
The Benelux is kinda the model the EU was built upon, so even before, these 3 countries had some rules for themselves.
The Netherlands is the best non-native English speaking country in the world 😁👏
@@ryonnl Yeah but these 2 boys are from Belgium not from the netherlands as mentioned in this video
