Sally Mann is one of the most influential and greatest photographers of our time. I’ve taught photography for 15 years and followed her work from the beginning of my career. She had great influence on me and my students. I lost my 20 yr old daughter Hanah to suicide in 2012 and was devastated to hear of the loss of her precious Emmett.
Her autobiography is great, but this is the first time I know of where we hear her family's ideas about her work; thanks for that. There are also brief glimpses of what look like unpublished prints, so thanks for that too. This may also be the first colour pictures I've seen that show SMs eyes so clearly: a blue black ring around a mercury green iris @8:38.
5:00 A complicated process to do at home. Now imagine Carleton Watkins with 18×22 plates way out on the deepest boondocks, with all the equipment, as well as hundreds of kilos of glass, carried by donkeys. I know of no other photographic process as labor intensive, or as insanely complex as the work Watkins did. And SM deserves massive respect for doing something similar, even with "small" 8x10 plates on her back porch. And then there is all the work she did on 11x14. Sally Mann is no slack.
First time watching her in action. Gosh. I never imagined her that way. I thought these pictures WERE effortless. Fuck she is amazing. But her fingerssssss
It makes me wonder who would want to " appreciate " the images that she took . . and why they would be interested at all in looking at such pictures.. ?? Rolf Harris was also an artist . . was he not ? I just get the feeling that there is something not right in displaying such images, especially in this world we live in where there are so many pdf-files lurking around . . .
They wanted to arrest her for child porn I canoed past her house not knowing where she lived have been lucky enough to talk to her at a gallery opening in Richmond Virginia and at the Virginia Museum of Art
There are no ‘intricate’ techniques just the over indulgence of the comfortably well off using quaint old chemistry, and not doing that very well either.

A privilege to watch. Very grateful for Sally Mann for doing this.
A true master of the camera, light and composition. An inspiration that I always reference when creating my own works.
Best video Ive found on UA-cam in a very long time. What an incredible genius

Superb movie about an exceptional artist
Such beautiful images and a beautiful family.
I could watch her work. All day.
Love the pictures great work❤🫣
Exquisite body of work. Her dad gave her the best start in life, it seems.
So indulgent in both the processes and the subject matter.
Sally Mann is awesome.
This is so inspirational

Thanks for explaining why she switched from taking non portraits, I was always curious about that.
An amazing Amerian family, in touch, directed, and physically beautiful

Very insightful from her daughter 10:58 re the landscapes likely being the legacy of all those decades of effort.
Interesting and strange at the same rime
They wanted to arrest her for child porn I canoed past her house not knowing where she lived have been lucky enough to talk to her at a gallery opening in Richmond Virginia and at the Virginia Museum of Art
I wonder what people would say if a man took them photos.......
Yea had to stop the video right there, wish it was blurred on here
Is she really washing the chemicals off the plates in a pristine lake?!
Decades old film
Shes quite normal 😅😅😅😅
Humans.
Exposing her children like that?
She should be in jail!

Exactly not to mention she sexualized her underaged children to get attention and fame!

Yeah, if she had a DSLR she could be getting far better results.
@@petemc5070 i'm going to take a guess and say you have 0 or very little expertise in photography lmao
