It's funny how through watching youtube videos about shaving with straight/safety razors I got a bit anxious and thought I would head shave with a straight razor a month or so after owning one. So today is the second day of me owning one and I did both beard and head without cutting myself. Not the closest shave but still. Tip for newbs: just do it. Don't overanalyse. Don't think about it. Just do it. Not hard at all using a straight razor.

+18ceasar Yeah, the though of shaving with straight/safety razors can actually be scarier than actually doing it. All you have to do is just shave what you are comfortable with shaving and then finish off with your regular razor. Each time you shave with the razor you'll gain more muscle memory and will be able to shave more of your face/head. After a while it just becomes second nature.

Nice collection of videos mate. Thanks for sharing. Considering doing this myself very, very soon! The amount of criticism, vitriol and downright nasty comments on UA-cam astonish me so 10/10 for bravery etc. Peace.... Paul, UK

I think you are going to find nasty comments everywhere you go. You just have to learn not to take it personal. When someone leaves a nasty comment, I just interpret it as they are having a bad day or going through a rough time in their life.
Definitely give it a shot. It turned shaving from a necessary chore to a pleasurable hobby.

Good stuff. I've been getting better with the Dovo and half DE blade on my head. Coming off a Head Blade 4 blade cart razor there. I don't need the mirror much, but getting the area around the the sides and back of the ears is tough.

ronnie greher Yeah, the ears are really tough. I actually really like the Head Blade razor. It was one of the most intuitive razors I've ever shaved with. I just don't like paying for the replacement cartridges.

Hi. Great video. I’m after a new straight for face and head. What point would you recommend for the head ? Is rounded point better than a square point please?
    All the best.

I've only really used the rounded points. I feel like you might be less likely to nick your head with the rounded points, but I really don't have anything to back up that opinion with.

I am new to straight blade I wanna learn cuz it's cheaper but I do have a question about shave cream I use a gel right now does it matter?

    • @ShaveWithThomas

+david knuth I'm the type of person that tends to advise people to use whatever they are comfortable with. There is no set rule that you have to use shave soap/cream with a straight blade. If you're just starting out and want to use gel with your straight blade, I say go right ahead.
If you do decide to stick with the gel, I would NOT recommend a badger hair brush. I bought some zirh gel shaving cream one time and tried to spread it with a badger hair brush, and it's just not the same.
If you have never used a badger hair brush and shave soap/cream before, I would highly recommend trying it out. It seems like a small thing, but I really do think using the badger hair brush to apply the soap makes shaving a lot more enjoyable.
Finally, if you do give the straight blade a try with the gel and you don't enjoy it, then don't abandon the straight blade until you've tried it with shave soap and a badger hair brush. There is a learning curve to the straight blade, but I think it's worth the effort spent learning.

+P!K.UR.PO!SON This really depends on how you hold the blade. I like to straighten the scales(handle) out so the blade and handle are in a straight line. I tend to think about pushing the spine towards the back of my neck. I keep on pushing the spine down towards my neck as I shave up the back of my head. This helps me keep the correct angle.
I find shaving the back of the head is kind of shaving an "S" pattern. When you start at the neck it tends to go in. After awhile the head starts protruding back out, so you have to adjust the angle. It's like a reverse scooping motion where your thumb is getting closer to the back of your head and you are pushing your pinky and bottom of the hand up and away from your head.
I hope that helps, it's kind of hard describing it in words.

I tend to open the razor up in a straight line and put my thumb on the back of the spine. I start from the base of my neck and go up. I tend to error on the side of having too shallow of an angle. If it's not cutting the hair, then I'll gradually increase the angle. You have to constantly adjust the angle since the back of your head protrudes out kind of similar how you have to adjust the angle when you transition from the top of your jawline to your neck.
