How to make a Sketchbook for your Art Portfolio

We’ve compiled a few sketchbook examples from Ashcan students, to give you some ideas on where to start, and if you have a sketchbook already, to inspire you to try something new.
At Ashcan we encourage all of our students to keep sketchbooks and draw in them daily. If you do this every day, or every other day, you'll see your drawing skills improve really quickly.

Wow, your videos are so helpful! I'm applying this year to schools in the US. I'm really confused about what to draw because there are so many possibilities but such less time, but your videos really give me a sense of clarity in that every possibility is good in its own right! Love from India ❤️

What kind of sketchbook do you buy for a portfolio sketchbook?

Hi! A sketchbook is a very personal choice. You can go to a place like Blick Art Supply and choose the one that you like the most, the one you think you’d most like to use. Most of our students use somewhere around 8.5 X 11” - 9”X 12” but there’s a lot of different sizes that are all good. Arteza sketchbooks are great & we like Canson XL too.
