Hi D&M, you read my mind :) My husband and I will move there in few months and are trying to decide which car we should buy there!. Your insights and info came just in time. As always, we appreciate your time and efforts to make the videos, you're are helping many people, like us. Much appreciate it. Blessings!
Hello Diana! We are so glad you find value in our content and that perhaps we helped you a little in your 🚗 research. Thanks so much for your ongoing support. Cheers! M&D
I’m going to assume you made this video just for me after my question last week!😂😂. Love the mini with the blacked out windows and black rims. Nice pop on the side mirrors too! Great info as always my fellow Canadians!
Good tips, especially about the smaller displacement gasoline engines having to struggle up hills. I had a car where I'd use a combo of the steering wheel, clutch, gas, and handbrake on steep hills. That 3 second brake release feature would have been very handy.
Great tips!! You are absolutely right! Small and powerful car is the way to go. Amazed by how narrow and steep some roads are that Madeira drivers are very used to coexist and share a 2 ways narrow road! Speaking of EV, since electricity is considered expensive on the island (no AC, dryer), do charging station cost reasonably?
Hello ahha! Yes small and powerful!! We are told EV is cheaper then gas. 😎 Not sure in comparison to other places. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers! M&D
Great info with excellent tips on selection. Can you please create a vlog with information on the drive away cost (approx price) in Madeira island for a suitable entry level car with either automatic or an EV that will have the juice to maneuver the terrain there. Also on another note, is there a pull back or cool off happening in the real Estate market both for rental and purchase. Wondering if a slow down has begun in light of G Visa, Air Bnb, and other rental market regulations being introduced by the govt. Thanks again for the Vlog and Good week end!
Hello cookmaster! Thanks for another video idea! Right now there is no cool off for real estate. Prices remain steady or rising. There is also low selection. Rentals are the same. Tough to find. Madeira is still hoping to maintain the GV. A decision is not yet made. Also the Airbnb problems of mainland and regulations are not here on Madeira. So for that, everything seems to be about the same. Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
Love your mini! Great advice all around. I've had a few EV's here in the states and am considering the mini EV or maybe the new Volvo EX30 (EV) when I arrive. I'll take a look at that Peugeot as well!
Hello Chris! We will check out the Volvo EX30! It’s nice to hear from an experienced EV owner! The Peugeot is pretty nice as well! Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. Cheers! M&D
Great advice Doug & Monique! Also, I see that you've upgraded since last we met. 🙂 Love your choice of the new car, same type I've been thinking about when we get over there.
Hello! We can no longer see names on the comments only user Id. Please let us know who this is! 🙂 Yes our mini lovingly named Chappie is awesome! Thanks for watching! M&D
Hey JP! Doug says he thinks they would all apply pretty much. You of course are purchasing on mainland. 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D
Hello Warren and Miri! Yes we drive around in our friends Yaris Hybrid and it’s awesome! Great choice! Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D ps Doug added that his friend does say that it’s not as powerful going up the hills as an EV or diesel. But fuel efficient!
Hello! You should be on the Track us down team!! Thank you as we forgot to mention that yes there is an incentive from the government for purchasing a new EV. Well… maybe a follow up video! Thanks for the reminder and thank you for watching! Cheers! M&D
@@Track_Us_Down looking forward to the follow up video 🙂. My wife and I will be coming to Madeira in September on our first exploratory trip from San Diego California. Retirement approaching in less than 9-months. Thank you for introducing Madeira to us.
Just curious…. You have to pay a yearly roadtax? And do you have your car to be inspected yearly? Like in Belgium, Holland this needs to be done if your brandnew car passes a certain age (4 years i think).
Hello! We just pay for a yearly car registration. Approx 15€\month. No road tax. There are yearly inspections for cars over a certain age. Thanks for watching! M&D
Interesting that you can buy a car! Great news! But... what about your drivers licence? Can it be converted, or do you have to rewrite the exam and go through a driving school after a certain period of residency? Is their a special weight and horsepower for new drivers if you have to rewrite your drivers licence?
Hello! Thanks for watching! We exchanged our Canadian drivers license and presented an apostillised drivers abstract. We also had a quick medical check up. We were then given Portuguese drivers licenses. Fast and easy. I think over 60 there may be more to the process. Cheers! M&D ps.. I think the cost was 30€
@@Track_Us_Down.Thank you so much for your reply. Here in Italy our Canadian licences are not valid after one year of residence. We have to rewrite the Italian test in Italian and start all over again as new driversl. It is a royal pain. Maybe should have moved to Portugal, Ha, Ha!
You mentioned the tags stay with the car. How is the car registration procedure? If your US driver's license hasnt expired, are you still using your US driver's license or did you have to surrender it? If you have a Portugese driving permit, did you(or will you) need to pass driving exams/tests? BTW love your car!!
Hello! Right the tags stay with the car, registration is easy. We exchanged our licenses for Portuguese licenses, very easy as long as you have your drivers abstract apostillised with you. You do give your US or CAD drivers license in exchange. We also had to get a physical. ( very quick, couple questions, walk a line, blood pressure) over 60 the process may be more complex, as far as we know. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D ps… Glad you like Chappie!
@ Thank you for checking. I want to bring an F-type with me when I move. I was hoping there would be a dealer who could service it. I’ll have to find a someone who is mechanicaly knowledgeable
I'm not surprised you didn't go into importing cars into Portugal. I've heard that can be fraught with tax/duty costs and bureaucratic procedural nightmares!!
Hello Greg! We prefer parkade! Our American friends here say car park or parking garage. We’ve never heard parking structure. Interesting! Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
Hello! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts AWD would be great if you plan to do lots of island driving! 4WD if you plan to go off road. Cheers! M&D
06:40 the electric VW in the background caught my eye. 😏
Hello! Yes yes quite nice! Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D

Good to know about the EVs on Madeira. I'm in the US and have a Polestar2 and love it.
Hello! Oh that’s an awesome car! Yes EVs are the way to go here! Thanks for watching and sharing. Cheers! M&D
Good tips, especially about the smaller displacement gasoline engines having to struggle up hills. I had a car where I'd use a combo of the steering wheel, clutch, gas, and handbrake on steep hills. That 3 second brake release feature would have been very handy.

Hi Doug, Monique, what about a hybrid vehicle? We were thinking of getting the 2024 130 HP Yaris hybrid hatchback. Any thoughts? Thanks. Warren & Miri

Is there a Jaguar specialist on Madeira?
