Franco Corelli in Parma - Tosca - "E lucevan le stelle" (English subtitles)

- (Puccini: Tosca) Teatro Regio di Parma, January 21, 1967
Not only Corelli's prolonged B-flat at the climax of "Recondita armonia"; his twelve-second A-sharp on "Vittoria!"; and his 22-second "discogliea dai veli" with unbelievable control of the diminuendo in "E lucevan le stelle", but also the audience's explosive frenzy and participation has to be heard to be believed.
The shouts for "bis" after "E lucevan le stelle" went on seemingly forever. The audience was absolutely livid at being denied the encore and over and over drowned out the orchestra until Corelli hand signaled that he would sing for them after the opera, which he does, the most soulful and impassioned "Core 'ngrato," after a piano is rolled onto the stage.

Eccezionale Corelli.
Allora Sig. Unbelievable... Corelli was probably a God who came on Earth to show us how to sing.... Thank you for posting this exceptional document... I could cry...
CORELLI!! No one else can compare .. only he has the Voice of Pure Liquid GOLD!! The Best Tenor that ever lived!! Magnificent!!
He and Jussi Bjorling are my favourite tenors Blessings and peace
Very true your words say it all...
Immenso
Beato lei...
I have seen about 60 operas in person in my lifetime and listen to countless others via live recordings and I have NEVER heard applause like this. Just...astonishing.
UranusRising Agreed
He deserved it
There are 2 others I know of that are on par. Pavarotti's debut in 1961 La Boheme after Che Gelida Mania live & Domingo singing Carman in Vienna in 1978 after the flower song - both recording on youtube :)
Its because he is one of ...if not the best to do it.
I heard it once. For him. After his celeste aida with the great diminuendo, in Dallas. Met on tour.
I would say that Franco Correlli, could mos probably hold his breath under water for about six minutes. It's just amazing how long he can hold those notes for, Love ya mate
This brings tears to a grown man if one dares let the music into our cold heart and face our tender experiences through this aria. Franco Corelli’s sustained pianissimo reached into the heart and rips it out! I read that he even knew his voice was exceptional this night at the Parma. I’m glad this humble tenor-genius knew he stirred the audience’s soul with his mezza voce, and genuine vocal sentiments.
The best version I have ever heard.
Corelli’s voice arguably one of the best with de Stefano, Bjorling (both float the diminuendos effortlessly) a few others stand out, if permitted to indulge in the old style, the 1918 Beniamino Gigli performance of this aria. A scratchy recording but heartfelt emotional delivery. Also, the impossibly nuanced, Tito Schipa and Miguel Fleta’s sensitive diminuendos.
I wish more people here on YT expressed their appreciations in such a beautiful and gallant way as you have!
Bravo! Beautiful man, beautiful voice, excellent technique and the emotions!!!
I saw him sing Gounod's Romeo et Juliette at the Old Met back in the '60s. I was amaze how tall he was and I could easily hear every word way in the back of the Family Circle.
Here's a little Corelli anecdote: A few years ago a music critic asked the current members of the orchestra, "What was your most memorable performance?" The first violinist said, "I once performed with Corelli."
And that violinist was understating it.
Simply brilliant. What an amazing spinto voice. What power, breath control. You can feel the tears streaming down his cheeks as he laments here for his love. Just fantastic. And listen to the reaction, what more needs to be said. Outstanding.
There seems to be no limit to his voice . So glad these recordings exist and are posted for us all. GRAZIE!
This is a spiritual experience. The late Corelli's voice is simply spiritual and that of the Gods. This performance transcends any other version - in recording/ or that I have seen in person. I would describe Corelli's voice as having both Dramatic and Lyrical Tenor Qualities.
With all the focus on the late Pavarotti's voice - here is a performance that so far emerges from the many ones by Pavarotti - that I can not fathom how he was placed on such a high place on the Pantheon.
I would also suggest Jussi Bjorling as another great - and Lyrical Tenor - that had the Gift of God.
You should definitely check this interpretation of MDM . It was one of the best of E Lucevan le Stelle I've heard.

I heard him in Tosca in Pasadena. Possibly more extreme than this. You believe every note he sings. That "Vittoria" that went around the world caused a huge collective gasp from the audience. Melted me. I couldn't move. Premiereopera has it.
A very, very beautiful perforrmance although the end was a little bit odd. But when I hear this aria with Jussi some tears are falling on my cheeks. With Corelli, no tears. I don’t know why.
@@pederlettstroem980 Remember, I heard this LIVE. You only get half of his voice on recordings. The swell of the upper range with vast silvery overtones is unbelievable. I can't stand Jussi in anything. And I've tried. I understand his was a small voice as well as well as narrow and that irritating Swedish twang.
Yes, Jussi used a lot of vibrato up top forte, when singing very open for effect , I saw him in 1958, yes it was a bit smaller then in his studio records, but also in studio he was not as warm in his singing as live, sometimes JB was seemingly cold in studio recordings, the voice was usually larger sounding on his records, but seeing him 1958 at age 18, and in a lyric role, it was easily big enough I thought, it wasn't really small for most of his roles. I saw him as the Duke, essentially JB was a lyric tenor ---more then spinto, don't compare him to FC or some other spinto voices like Domingo, Bergonzi or of course Tucker--- JB more a Pavarotti type, he was a great musician vocally, and artist that sang many kinds of music with perfection, not hammy or bad habits, no bad habits really, he was also fine in German lieder, French, Italian, his own Swedish and English, yes he did record very well, as did Pavarotti. Live is best and you miss often overtones in studio stuff , some voices really did not record well, Tucker and MDM especially did not record very well, FC did record pretty well and accurate, I saw all of them I mentioned , of course---- I prefer FC in spinto or dramatic roles (like Calaf) more then lyric ones, he was a reeally great Calaf -- I saw him a few times, but of course in house you get the passion, even more so then here.
This (Corelli @ Parma opera theatre in 1967) is considered to be the best "E lucevan le stelle" in opera history
NOWHERE AS HOOD AS DOMINGO ,S RENDITION . SORRY .

I wish there was a video recording from that night. How I envy this audience. He was simply incomparable.
vero. sublime
My dearest Franco Corelli. I saw him live in Milan in 1959 when I was only 15 years old and immediately fell in love with him. Now I'm an old lady with several grandchildren and I'm still in love with him. His voice, his emotions, his tenderness, his modesty, his looks. Franco Corelli the man.
Wow! You just don’t hear opera sung like that anymore!!!! Absolutely incredible!!!!!
The voice of infinite depth and color. Although he is singing, this aria is so natural he seems to be talking, and to himself as should be. The diminuendo-I am swooning.
The best Version I ever heard. Bravissimo!!!
Never has this aria been sung as beautifully as this. Incomparable, supreme Maestro 🌹❤
Corelli, INARRIVABILE
Thank God for recordings!! A voice that definitely deserves & needs to live forever ...
OMG!! Do you hear him holding on to those notes!!!!! BRAVISSIMO FRANCO!!🎉
How can this be topped? No words. A voice from God. Thank you for this gift.
Caruso?
@@Ihdc1 We're talking about Corelli.
C' è tutto. La forza, la tenerezza, la tragedia, l' amore, la disperazione, la rabbia, la potenza, la dolcezza
the sound of the woman crying passionately Bravo at the end which then triggers this massive applause gives me absolute chills every time
It can't be another way. It is unreachable platinum level of connection between audience and artist. My words are ridiculous. This is heaven
The great Corelli knew what opera was all about. It is about THRILLING your audience...something he did with amazing technique, a beautiful voice and appearance, and very often! Opera is about SINGING....Voice, Voice, and Voice...Hollywood and TV do all the rest better....but singing is what makes opera.
I agree! If you go to the opera, and you are struck by how the acting could be better, then the voices are definitely not up to it. If they were, the only thing you would focus on would be the singing.
It was a night of history! Never, no way no way he sang it. What a voice, what emotion, inexhaustible air, and what a look! Thank you dear Roberta!
Who sings like this today? who inspires an audience like this now? Audiences presently don't even
have the sensibility needed to create the magic of Italian opera, which is partly the fault of the times and the ugliness generally smothering the world. Ah, to be an Italian years ago living graciously..... Corelli, Puccini, Amore, Divine.....
Un genio immenso. Chi potra mai eguagliarlo? E che prestanza fisica! Xke la televisione non lo ricorda. A
Nobody...
how true not to many people know this but franco was a big mario lanza fan
This decrescendo on a very long breath is an absolute sensation. The shock it causes the audience probably resulted in a collective swoon. I would probably have been at my wits' end after that evening. And I would never have wanted to hear Tosca again. In fact, I know of no better interpretation of this aria - and I think I know all the ones that were recorded :-)
I made the mistake of listening to this before I went to see a production of Tosca......
I saw him sing this in Pasadena. Unbelievable. I was totally mesmerized. Couldn't move.
I know exactly what you mean.
an exhibition like this should be the benchmark for every tenor. Pure beauty. Grande Franco
Lovely. E Lucevan le Stelle (And the stars shone), the final aria by Mario Cavaradossi, the hero and Floria Tosca`s lover from the very passionate opus Tosca. Sublimely performed by Mr. Corelli.
I can never listen to another version of this! There . . . is . . . no . . . better (nor will there ever be)
in the history of this universe!!
Greatest aria ever sung by its greatest interpreter. Never heard this until searching for a favorite interp on Spotify few yrs ago. He has no equals.
OMG 😲 incredible performance! The audience has gone wild.
There are no words to describe this. VIVA CORELLI!!!
Corelli immenso!
Oh how I wish I had heard this great man sing live. Extraordinary.
it would have ruined you for any other tenor singing that repertoire.
for the space of about six years, from 1968 - 74 i had the privilege which has lasted me a lifetime, to hear and see him live at the met.
though jon vickers, in another rep, was another top contender and total artist.
Franco is still my tenor god.
@@artistsf1 You're right. After hearing him sing a role/aria, I never want to hear someone else do it.
In Italy we say that the Regio Theater of Parma is the tomb of the liric singers; after almost 70 years this performance is in the legend too.
Non ho mai ascoltato qualcuno simile. Fantastico. È il Dio del canto.
OMG thank you very much for uploaded this performence...
That was the best "E lucevan Le Stelle" ever
My heart seems stop beating at the moment ...
Bravissimo ,unico, mai sentito questo brano cantato così, eccezionale ,divino Corelli
Super human breath control. I got winded just listening. Amazing feat!
Swimmers lungs, he was a swimmer for a while. It was in part of his biography somewhere.
The diminuendos are beyond this universe.
So true!
Hahahah, I was talking to a friend at that moment, and I said to him, “Corelli, you fucker. You milk that diminuendo.” 😂
Magnificent! Unbelievable voice!
Greatest tenor!!! Maestro Corelli!
This is one of the most amazing renditions that I have ever heard
Blessings and peace
He held that note for dear life. Bravo Corelli.
This performance of E LUCEVAN LE STELLA and the entire opera of TOSCA was the greatest given by any TENOR ever.Is it any wonder why this knowledgeable Parma audience were so enthusiastic in their applause. How lucky they were to have been there and see the great Franco perform.
not only knowledgeable but also very difficult to be satisfied...

Translated into English: he brought the house down with that! A marvel and a genius! That man must have five lungs, at least!

No words. NO! WORDS. I thought Luciano's version brought tears to my eyes. This makes me weep. Astonishing!!! BRAVISIMO!!!!

Wow, what a masterful diminuendo with extended pianissimo, the finale is really exciting. Great post!
From 1:55 to 2:16, he sings a 21 sec diminuendo to messa di voce and again crescendo, on a single breath and you can hear the audience holding their breath and then rustling in amazement at 15 sec and another part of the audience asking them to be quiet. Priceless!
That is seriously great.
True, but it's a mezza voce not messa di voce
It's the part that keeps me coming back!
breath, not breadth

I cried for the first time in years
Your comment actually made me cry. I agree, Corelli's performance is transcendent.
Understandable
I didn't cry for the first time in years! Only Lara Fabian and Caruso make me cry! Oh, and Meatloaf!
I am crying with you and for you. Take care, dear friend.
I cried too. His emotion is so real.

Magnifico.
Divine..transcends you in heavenly dreams!
We may not be able to see his acting through this recording, but no doubt the acting through his singing is academy award worthy!
I don’t think I’ve ever heard this aria quite as good as this. It’s just gorgeous, his high notes are as thrilling as you’d expect, but his diminuendi…they’re incomparable. And that applause at the end? Thoroughly deserved. He extracted every last ounce of emotion out of that aria, my goodness.
Corelli ti porta nello spazio infinito, oltre le stelle.
+Lea Lehaller -- You've really nailed it, Lea :)
Assolutamente d'accordo. Impossibile immaginare di meglio
If Puccini could not imagine this, perhaps the answer is that Puccini did not write the aria for a self indulgent and undisciplined freak. Singers should serve the composer and not themselves.
May be you like Bjoerling?Corelli was for liric what Shakespeare was for theater...
The irony of your statement is that Corelli was/is one of the handful of tenors working at any given time who can sing this as written, with the diminuendo. Corelli was the epitome of discipline and the consummate professional, by all accounts according to his colleagues. His voice was ever at the service of the music, as shown in various recordings of celeste Aida or Chelonia e mar where he also attentively provides sublime diminuendo. But one must consider that Corelli himself was at the service of the voice, meaning a powerful instrument like this is at times like a wild animal or a kind of force of nature, sometimes on the very razor's edge of one's control. This can be heard in Corellis singing; he often sounds like he has too much voice, and has to reign it in. How many singers, let alone tenors, can make that claim?
