  • Learn about the last of the great ThroBak PAF pickup winding machines, the Meteor ME-301 coil winder.
ThroBak Electronics has gathered a working museum of vintage Gibson P.A.F. and P90 guitar pickup winders. The ThroBak Meteor ME-301 PAF pickup winder stands alone as being the last of the 50's vintage era guitar pickup winding machines that are still used by Gibson Guitar to wind pickups. Learn the history of the Meteor ME-301 and ME301/481A as guitar pickup winding machines. Jon Gundry explains what sets these machines apart from the other three known PAF pickup winders owned by Gibson Kalamazoo in the 1950's. The tonal impact these machines have on the final pickup is explained along with changes to the machines through the years to the present day. Changes to wire guides, tensioning, bobbin capacity and winder speed are discussed in detail.
ThroBak Electronics restored their Meteor ME-301 pickup winding machines to the original 50's era specs. This machine is used by ThroBak to make their prized P.A.F. pickup and Patent Number guitar pickup reproductions.

Great information as always Jon. I have always thought it's important to keep the past alive and its history. Especially Gibson guitars/pickups

Fascinating video. I guess that efficiency was very important to Gibson as the guitar craze took off and demand for their instruments increased and then of course profitability came into consideration. Small but significant tonal changes resulting from changes in winding machines, procedures and materials probably went unnoticed or were regarded as unimportant by those concerned in the manufacturing process.

With the 35% difference, is that 35% more or 35% less?
