    I love how you always say “we” and “our” while you’re talking and dyeing, like all of us watching are there with you. It makes it more....personal(?) I can’t think of the word I want 😂 But that yarn turned out quite pretty!! When you first started washing it, I thought all the color was gonna wash away. But it didn’t and I really like it 💜💙💜💙

    There is a lot less damage to the fiber than I expected. And I see more green in person than I can see on the screen. The purple shades are very pretty. And yes, I noticed the static right away! I think it is more a result of a change to the fibers.

      There was a big difference in how the fibers held up between today and Friday's videos for sure. Thank you so much for being my lab partner!

    I really like the way it turned out with all the tonal purples. It’s weird how the green just disappeared! I wondered if it would take a bit more dye if you gave the yarn a quick wash to take out any sizing, etc. Thanks for your videos. So much vicarious fun!

      Part of the nature of this type of dye is to have a lot of excess to rinse out, so there will always be some of that. Some pre-washing could help, though. (This isn't usually a step I do!)

    i have died with acrylic and dye more. Most of the dye washed out, with the exception of the yarn that was touching the bottom of the pan. the yarn that touched the bottom of the pan, was very vibrant, the rest of the yarn was either white or pastel.

    I've dyed fabric in the washing machine, including white denim I dyed purple to make a pair of jeans. It works, but you have to stay nearby so you can restart the wash cycle multiple times and not let the machine drain the dye.

      I'd just be nervous because of past issues we've had with our washer (resulting in replacing it.) We couldn't figure out how we would get random stains on clothes - not every wash but sometimes. So I'd hate to have dye stuck in a place to come back and say hello at another time. :D

    Interesting how the purple overtook the green. I've noticed with acrylic yarn that some colors feel rougher than others. I have always assumed it was.dye related not heat related.

  • @bagladysendtheferalspinner3761

    Have you ever tried this technique for acrylic roving? If so do you have a video about this technique?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Рік тому

      I haven't. Once concern I'd have is that the dyeing process "kills" (i.e. melts) the fibers a bit so I'm not sure how spinnable it would be after. This is an interesting idea, though, I'll make note of it. :D

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials

      I don't recommend using Rit DyeMore Synthetic on any fibers other than synthetics like acrylic or polystester. For cotton you can use regular rit.

    Hey! So i am really REALLY into dying acrylic yarns and i use the Fixative, my bf says it helps even though the Rit Foxative is for natural fibers. I cant tell the difference, so is it possible for you to test this out? Maybe you can spot a dofference before i do. The fixatives are abt $3 at my local walmart.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials

      Dylan - questions are welcome! You can probably use an electric steamer if it will get hot enough. I believe that acrylic dyes need to be near boiling temperatures.

    Hi was wondering if it would be possible to stain my white acrylic yarn with natural dye. Not intending to get a super dark or vibrant colour, but was keen to try beet root, coffee, and other veges which i have quite an abundance of. Been scouring the internet for some tips and tricks but comments always lean toward not even wasting time with trying. But given im really just shooting for a light natural stain... Would this be achievable?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 роки тому +1

      In some of my natural dyeing videos I do have 100% acrylic and 100% polyester samples in there. Some of them did take up SOME tint compared to the undyed fibers.... Although I'm not sure if it was the acrylic or the polyester that took up something. (But compared to cotton and wool not much at all) ua-cam.com/video/Egz8qFSRExQ/v-deo.html

    Oh ALSO! How to prevent it from flatting as much! Dont exceed temps over 104°f, and when washing use HOT water then gradually cool down. Washing it in cold after having it in a hot pan will shock the fibers much like putting a hot pan in cold water! :)

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 роки тому

      Interesting, because 104 degrees isn't that hot. I feel like I had some decent results steaming in the past but the immersion dyeing worked SIGNIFICANTLY better in terms of flattening than steaming (which got very flat.)

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 роки тому

      I can try a cooler temperature next time I try this. I went super hot because of the instructions: Due to the complexity of dyeing synthetics, you must use the stovetop method to maintain an almost boiling temperature for the duration of your dyeing (200°F or greater). Accordingly: (1) you cannot dye anything that won’t fit into a pot on your stove and (2) you cannot use your washer because the machine won’t be able to achieve the water temperature needed for Rit DyeMore to penetrate the fabric.
