- I officially put the new, highly anticipated Ranger School Physical Assessment (RPA 2.0) to the test, and I have to say, it did not disappoint! The Airborne & Ranger Training Brigade is currently working through the process of trialing and implementing the new test. Although they still have to work out the kinks, this is what you can expect!

That's impressive. A 6:30 mile in uniform and boots is moving out.
Don’t let me make you think it didn’t hurt lol
This is probably the most in shape Army UA-camr I know, but seeing him struggle on this has made me realize I have to put in a bit more work and miles.
It’s a tough standard man. I really think they’ll have to go a little easier with this test.
Wow this does look hard. I’m glad they aren’t looking to lower the standards at least, ranger school needs to stay a very hard course .
Agreed!
27min seems a bit tight yeah? You’re fit as hell and only 40 sec to spare? Lotta people gonna fail this
Yeah it’s not an easy test at all
And your point ?
But the right people will pass 😊
lotta people should fail it. that's the point
@scotth3354 it's literally just the first 30 minutes of ranger school dude, this is way out of proportion
Give that dog a tab. He stayed with you through the test!!!
I was one of the ABOLC guys that took this a couple months back. It was honestly the hardest physical test I've done so far in the Army. I came in about 29:30 and I keep around a 560-70 ACFT. I've heard possible time change to 30 mins but we'll see what happens.
I wouldn’t be surprised with 30mins, that sounds more doable. Shits hard man, for real. I’m curious if you’ve done any training lately since that test to see if you can decrease your time?
@GrittySoldier Absolutely. The thing that smoked me the most was that skedco so I've been running drills with that and the kettle bells. Haven't had the opportunity to take it again but just might test myself to see where I'm at! Makes a great workout.
@gk7754 normally it is whatever technique you chose, I didn't see a specific requirement for the sked on the RPA 2.0
@gk7754 Hardboiled is right. They let us choose whichever, I opted for the loop over body and walked normally worked the best for me.
Seems a lot like a “Murph”. Just one long suck fest.
I completed this test with all of the same weight and distances and got a 28:30. I’m a decent runner (34:30-35:00 5MR) and this killed me. The standard is very high!
11/23/2023: Just tried it again after some deliberate training and got a 25:36!
I think it's just a different type of test. Running in pt gear and runnings shoes with no weight isn't practical in a combat unit.
For training, I recommending implementing the following events into your workouts:
- 3-5 second rush for intervals (3-5 rounds worth for 50 meters)
- Burpee EMOM (10 burpees every minute on the minute for 10 minutes)
- Farmers Carry @ more than 45LBs are at slow walking pace (this will develop your overall strength & make the RPA 2.0 carry less demanding)
- Pre-fatigue run (conduct a leg circuit that will smoke your legs, THEN go run 2 miles. Start by running them at goal pace.)
I’m joining the Army this June and on the path for Rangers,
Hopefully later this year. Your videos are extremely educational for someone like me!!
Let the young do thi😢. I’m 61 years old and I went through the process. A long time ago Being a ranger in a battalion is for the young man. The best of the best are Rangers. It made me a better human being. I found out humility and strength. Rangers lead the way!
You kick ass. Crazy seeing Gritty get gassed. Great job sir!
Gassed is progress! 💪 I like to find my “struggle-zone” it lets me know the “real” me lol
The fact that we went from a 8:00/mile for 5 in APFU’s to 7:00/mile for 3 in BOOTS is insane
you should see what it takes to be an actual ranger lol
I thought we had a 5 mile run. 1998-2007
But any young men watching this , understand this is a Ranger mentality. Good information and a leader , work ethic he has is tier 1
Still got a 5 mile as of 2023 it's not been implemented as a test of record yet we will see if it does the same thing when the acft kicked off to replace the apft I expect a 3.0 to follow up the 2.0
One thing, I know he did not have a SKEDCO, but I believe on the RPA 2.0, you can walk forwards with the weight behind you unlike the backwards drag on the ACFT, which is much harder. Great Video!
You definetly can I took the course at fort Moore you can drag it whichever way benefits you the most
I'm 59 , gonna try it in the next couple days just to see how much of the 80s era 1st Batt is left in me.
Awesome! Let us know how you do!
Hooah! Love this test... 61 years old - gonna get after it and see if I can still get it! :)
This is hard but doable. The Expert Infantry/Solider Badge pt test is actually pretty similar.
Your videos help motivate me so much I'm currently training for basic and being 30 trying to push myself is hard but seeing you just absolutely kill this reminds me I have so much more to give keep up the good work let's get this man to 100k subs ASAP.
I'm also using the standards for the younger guys because if I can keep up with 18 year old kids than i should be fine.
Ranger school was odd, as the course didn’t really care how fit you were when you went into it, as you were broken down from lack of food and lack of sleep to the point everyone was on the same level.
This also makes me wonder how many UA-camrs make a living of off the “Ranger” name while never actually having been in regiment.
Being in ranger school with West Point officers and big army dudes made me realize how glad I was to never have to spend time in that pace. The army really should do better job at the distinction of the actual special operations that is Ranger Regiment and the Slog of a school that gives you the Tab.
The Army did this by making Regiment have a selection, SOCOM budgeting, JSOC elements, and CQB training on par with the boys over the fence.
The Army knows we’re different. There’s no issue about it.
It’s the dorks getting an inflated ego over a tab earned because we had to be hungry and not take a nap for 62 days.
@@skipbayless5316that’s the best description of Ranger school I’ve ever heard lol,
There’s still tons of people on the army that actually don’t know the difference and think the overweight 2ID guy that went to Ranger school in 1999 is a “Ranger.”
My point remains but still.
@@skipbayless5316 So getting a ranger tab doesn't make you a ranger? What is the incentive to go? And why do units send their people to complete the course? I had always assumed the course was like selection for a SOF unit but i guess not
@@jimmy12347654buckle up because this is gonna get confusing.
No going to Ranger school doesn’t make you a Ranger and has zero connection with the three Ranger batallions that make up the 75th Ranger regiment, which is a special operations unit.
Ranger school is just an advanced small unit tactics and leadership course that all military branches can attend but primarily the army.
Unfortunately some people that pass Ranger school get a tab that says “Ranger” and call the themselevs rangers when in reality they aren’t, they serve ina. Conventional unit but just went to Ranger school to get a tab. The incentive is it’s a very prestigious school and still very difficult to complete.
To be an actual Army Ranger, that is special operations, you have to go through RASP (Ranger assessment and selection program) if you psd that you’ll be assigned to the 75th Ranger regiment and you’ll be an actual US Army Airborne Ranger, (think the guys that saved Marcus lutrell, extortion 17, black hawk down, etc….) to make things even more confusing EVERYONE in the Ranger regiment has to go to Ranger school to get the tab and you have to do that within a year of being in the Ranger regiment or they kick you out.
Ranger regiment is a special operations unit that gets assigned to JSOC on deployments with CAG/DEVGRU, etc…. High speed shit
Ranger school is just an army leadership course, it’s difficult and sucks, but it’s not the same thing and doesn’t make you a ranger.
There a lot of guys on UA-cam that put “Ranger” in the title of everything because they went to Ranger school, the actual special operations unit that makes you a real army Ranger is actually a pretty small place, there’s roughly 3500 active Army rangers at any given time, sometimes slightly more, sometimes less

The 3 mile in 27 min feels fast, but they’re assuming you can put out 6-7 min miles on command.
I’m doing 5:30 minute miles consistently straight out of bed. And I’m not completely gassed afterward either, nor do I run as often as I should or consistently and can still get those times, even if I don’t run for a month, if I push it hard and really get goin I can I shave a minute or a little over off. If I wanna puke I can get it down to 4:30ish sometimes a little less but I’m doing 1 mile and done also. And that’s also not in boots or uniform either and I smoke regularly lol, in high school I was close to breaking 4 minutes. Can’t join the military anyway as I have a DUI on my record. I’d love to have became a ranger.
@@Cody2ndYou can get a waiver
@Cody2nd talk to a recruiter, you possibly could get a waiver

Outstanding! Thanks for taking us through all the paces of this new assessment. I am going to take my sled and plates to the park and try this.
🤘
My battalion had a competition for a slot and we did it and I came the closest at 28:30 it’s no joke really humbled me and I’ve passed an SFE so it’s legit
I did the RPA 2.0 about a month back, it was the hardest PT test ive ever done, Being a smaller guy (155lbs) on the 185lb drag was an absolute disadvantage, it took me probably 7-8 minutes for that alone, my end time was 37:30, and the standard I was told at the time was 32 minutes.
Wow 32? Damn that’s a big difference from 27mins
Looks like a lot of fun. Going to try it out next week!
The only part about this test I would say is a positive for future Ranger school students is there is almost no room for interpretation. I went to ranger school last year and a ton of dudes failed pushups and the usual story that the grader was just an asshole came up for almost everyone of them. This test really takes that out of the equation unless they get knocked for the pull-ups which I don’t think we lost anyone for pull ups.
I was a Ranger instructor and there are instructors that let people get away with less than perfect push-ups. And then there are instructors who hold students to a standard, and those are supposedly the "a$$hole" instructors.
They do have to follow rules and standards.
Well done Sir ! Respect
I was thinking this wasn't too bad until you said boots and uniform lol, that changes things up drastically
100% respect to any person who is able to pass. Never mind being tough enough to even try. Good luck🎉
Hell yeah Gritty. That looks insane.
When doing test must be one at the time depending on equipment, so the no waiting for equipment to do the no stop test
Man that’s going to take forever
I think you could fairly subtract a minute from your time for filming and transition. You still made it look a lot easier than it probably is. Good job.
Good job. You got your mission accomplished.
Thanks for the update on the RPAT 2.0. I have some before I even thinking about talking to my leadership about trying to go to Ranger School. I have some things to prove to myself first as well.
It still is definitely good to know what things to keep in rotation in the training regimen. Always useful and inspirational information.
Give it a shot and see how fast you can do it! 💪
God bless the soldiers of this amazing country
Bro heck yeah!! I’m definitely going to have to give this a shot.. You killed it!!
In my opinion I think they should keep the sled weight but lower the distance.
In combat scenario the immediate goal is to get to cover and gain fire superiority in order to get to the next level of care.
Once basic care is established and I have a clear route to a treatment/evac zone, that person is going in my shoulders.
Amazing effort!!!!!! I think instead of 6 pullups, maybe 10 pullups/20 pushups/30 squats, then the carries, IMT, sled pull, then 800 meter run or 1 mile run. But then again I am just a fat retiree. Thats why Rangers lead the way. Keep up the amazing work.
This is good. This makes sense. This is the type of thing they should do for the whole Army.
Great video! definitely excited to continue to prepare for Ranger school 👍🏽
Love your channel. Keep up the great content!
Outstanding Demo! Thanks.
The Boots and Utes run, especially in that heat, makes me hurt from here..... The non-stop nature of this takes it to a whole ’nother level as well....... Glad I'm too old to have to worry about stuff like this anymore!
I like this test. Makes sense actually. Keeps the day short, time efficient, and will almost immediately weed out those who are less prepared.
Thanks for being true to time and putting in full effort man ✊🏾
They're definitely going to bump the pass time to 30 minutes. Aint no way every RI is passing this
😂 that’s a good point!
Yea me and 6 recon guys did this new rpfa to get a PRC slot, let’s just say none of us got it and I came in at 29:00mins and I was in 2 second but even like the fitness dude I know didn’t pass but he beat me ofc. It’s really tuff and just a burner the whole time.
I know that Ranger candidates are not average people. But geez, even the three running miles alone in 27 minutes would be a massive challenge for most people out there - you don't run that time by mistake! It sounds like quite the test.
That's a great test. Excellent job of showing this to everyone. This is a great channel.
I like it. I think it’s a pretty damn good comprehensive program and much more relevant to a ground soldier’s job.
Legend status . 🔥
⚔️
I would say take it easy on mile 1 to keep the HR low for the other exercisers. I see a lot of people go out too hot on the first run of HYROX or too hot on the first few stations of DEKA and once you get anaerobic its hard to keep the engine going for an extended period of time.
The time limit means you got have a sub 7 mile time just to make the BARE MINIMUM. Very few people are running that in boots with a low HR. i get your idea though
Dang, great job man! I appreciate your videos.
Are they adopting a new philosphy focusing less on long distance running? I saw an interview recently with ex-Seal Eddie Penney and he seems to be a proponent of combat applicable training, didn't see all the running as necessary. I know nothing, just curious!
I'm gonna give this a go in January, see how I do! Keep it up boys!!
Like that watch. Is there a time penalty for dropping a kettlebell?
Not that I’m aware of (I know I let it fall 🤦♂️), I wouldn’t be surprised if they did incorporate something like that though.
That’s crazy, the worst you can do on a Marine Corps PFT is 27:40 for the 3 mile only (if you’re 18 to 20 years old). To have to do that and more in less time, you have to be extremely fit especially with boots and utes on. Respect
Do you actually know many Grunts that run it that slow or that get a second class pft? If so, were they placed in exercise hell? Just asking, because it has been 37 plus years and it was almost unheard of to see a single Marine not get a first class pft. Matter of fact, most guys enjoyed PFT day because it made for a light day with 20 pull-ups, 80 sit-ups and a short 3 mile run.
"Im gonna do this no matter what" is very much true this shit hard
That four-legged grader was not playing, lol. Thank you for the upload
She was keeping a keen eye on me. Making sure I wasn’t slacking or cheating. 😂
So much talk about this around Fort Moore. I got this major telling me it ain’t gonna happen, this captain saying it won’t be till 2026,l idk what to believe
I’m not convinced it’s coming any time soon….
I did an RPA 2.0 for the first time three days ago at a national gaurd course called Ranger sapper assessment program (RSAP) in the PA guard. It was run by Ranger instructors and some things i want to add in this comment are from my experiences that day. For the graded chin ups, the RI would stand about a foot from me and tell me when to go up or down. He did not count reps that did not go to a dead hang. So i think none or your reps would have counted, also if i swung and touched the RI the rep would not count. For the skedco drag they said their is not a specific way to drag it so most of us put the stap around our torso like a pt belt and dragged it behind us walking forwards. Also the skedco weight is much more distributed and easier to pull then the ACFT sled in my opinion and the nature of the material of the skedco slides much easier with less friction. Even after a one mile run the skedo drag seemed easier then the ACFT drag to me personally.
I passed the RPFT the previous day but got a 29:37 on the RPA 2.0, I had never trained for it before I took it. Id say its like the sprint drag carry but for half an hour. the worst part is rolling up the Skedcos at the end
Awesome time! Got one tomorrow morning, we’ll see how it goes.
Gritty Soldier is The Man!!!
Very curious to see you take a PST for bud/s just for the hell of it. Would love to see. 500m CSS swim, 2 mins max push ups, 2 mins max sit ups, 2 mins max pull ups, and a 1.5 mile run. If you ever run out of ideas please try it! Love your videos man. Take care
I know you’re in shape, out of my curiosity I wanted to just see how well you’d do!
Most army guys aren’t a big fan at swimming or like swimming
@@apacheblack138295% of the dudes in my unit are swimmers lol
@@apacheblack1382I’m in the army btw! But I get what you mean
Wow, that is a tight time window. You have to be running a 6 min mile for the first mile and 13 min 2 mile to feel comfortable.
The Army was proposing this APFT more than 10 years ago before I retired.
BTW, that's called basic APFT. You're expected to work out everyday 6am sharp for 2 hours with your platoon.
At least that's how it was when I was in the service,
My father was in 15 years ago, uncle has been in for 20+ years, brother in laws were all in for multiple contracts 10+ years ago, and I am in currently. One of my BiL’s was in 2nd Batt actually. This has never been the army standard. This includes my Vietnam era uncle and the WWII great uncle.
Ridiculous that you think that this guy was the median soldier 15 years ago
I have watched the entire video yet, but from the explanation at the beginning, this sounds like the PT that Ranger Regiment has been doing for YEARS!!! Doing all that wearing the plate carrier……. Regiment guys are some SERIOUSLY in shape guys!!! I showed some Marines the RPFT, and they were like F that!! Lol tried to tell them Regiment is a different animal
Class 8-90 here. I have to say you have my respect.
damn the army just loves that damn 2 mile run they should just do 1 mile start then 1 at the end
Your videos are always good, I hope they keep these new standards. Ranger school should be for people that are at the top of the game ,so ranger school doesn't become just another ticket punch school like airborne school has become in my humble opinion
Thanks for saying that. And I agree completely!
Just did this came in around 34:50. To be honest, I'm out of shape compared to some other guys, and this wasn't to bad. More or less if you're an absolute PT stud this should be easy.
I honestly feels like it’s a modified RPAT in a way. The sled is the most difficult part Lol
The sled is 💯 the worst part lol
Keep it forward,🍻🏴☠️ STB
Only a quick half glance at the thumbnail, and I thought you were using a floor buffer on your sandy backyard. Seemed like a pretty Ranger thing to do.
I'm 70 but think I could still pass this test. The sled may make make me a liar - I am going to try it when it's warmer - i'm at 7400 feet but not in that damn Georgia heat and humidity.
Might want to try it when it’s cooler, this test is no joke.
Gritty is my hero
😊
Sounds like fun 😊
I need to hit my workouts harder. If this is gonna be the new ranger standard
Hahaha! Much love Brother, but it ain't going to happen. If the BIG ARMY would not accept the "RPAT" specifically for Regiment, which initially did even have a "time standard"; then a "27 minute RPA 2.0" definitely isn't going to fly. Honestly, I would love to see RTB pulled into Regiment's Ranger Operations Company (ROC). Who better to set the standards for an "Airborne Ranger" than the NCO's at the 75th Ranger Regiment? I am sure the RTB O-6 would be thrilled about reporting directly to R-CSM. BUT now they can called themselves "4th, 5th, and 6th Ranger Battalion".
I believe you are allowed to drag the weight facing forward. I don't think it has to followed the ACFT format. Correct me if I'm wrong tho. overall, the time really depends on how fast you run those two miles.
Also... For everyone watching, during pull ups they will expect you to have your elbows locked (fully lowered). And they will tell you, (ex) up, down, up, down....
That’s a nice back yard!
Great job, man. What kind of boots were you wearing?
I was like oh this is easy to are they doing, and then he said + 2 miles at the end 🤣
While I enjoy seeing PT tests for combat arms schools and the like evolve away from PT gear and run, sit up, push up etc I do feel like sometimes they go a little too far.
It will be very interesting to see the final evolution of this.
I’m no longer serving but still try my best train to be able do stuff like this. But I’m not sure I’d be able to train to pass this, the run would destroy me.
It’s not. We need higher quality studs graduating.
@@skipbayless5316 I agree that we do need high standards. This I feel at the 27min cut off is pushing right at the limits. All the aspects of the test I think are spot on. Probably moving this to 30min would still be a huge effort. With this having 3 miles of running if you can’t do a 3 mile in I am having a guess of under 21 min in PT kit you will definitely be in the hurt. Just my observation and I’d be interested to try work towards this myself.
One thing we used to have for barrier/entry test was 2 mile runs with webbing/patrol order. I liked that we had to wear basic kit at least, sorted out those who were great runners in PT gear but couldn’t work with any load. We had guys running 9min 1.5miles and 12 minute 2 miles who couldn’t run 2 in 16:30 with webbing. But guys who were right at the lower limits for passing in PT gear manage to finish well within the time limit. It all tests different aspects of fitness though.
I am way better at all these events than I was at the RPFT. This is still a super tight time limit. If you’re not hitting a six minute pace of better on those runs you’re gonna be struggling to hit those numbers. Looks like a logistical pain to use between hundreds of RS students
You are a hard core soldier ! I am glad we still have soldiers like you!
ranger school is a big goal of mine one day, definitely need to put in some work!
Holy shit. I’m way way way out of the army already and the 3 miles alone would eat up all 27 of my minutes for sure lmao.
Great showing!!!
I hear dubstep in the background! You should give Sullivan King a listen!
Hmm, graduated Ranger School in 1989 (14-89); 4 phases (Benning, Mountain, Swamp, Desert). It was a Combat Arms (male only) school at the time. Then sometime in the 1990s the buzz word was it became a “Leadership” school. It sucked then and I am sure it still sucks, But what is this new “Physical” test for a “Leadership” school other than to reduce female applicants. That’s all I see. I have heard rumors that females had/have different (varying) standards compared to the males #(don’t know if this is true or false I did not have females in my class). What ever happened to being able to pass the PT test to go (ok, vast majority of us were maxing it),…but shouldn’t the School Benchmarks weed out those that don’t have the gut, grit, grind, knowledge and ability to complete it. Just appears to be another “added” obstacle focused on the weaker sex to weed them out,…instead of the Actual Army Leadership (Officer and NCO) doing their jobs to ensure the Best are graduating
Sounds like a good idea for once.
@@vincentjoyce455 yes if the goal is to keep out the axe wounds. My point was; “it’s a continuation of the chicken bullshit I saw for almost 10years”. The real men left a long time ago.
I love these so much more. Much better for over all fitness
Good stuff, Sir. Do you have any idea when your new Ranger plan will come out?
Not until they decide when the RPA 2.0 will be implemented, if ever.
Well done!
I may never be able to hit the target time for years lol, but this seems like a fun workout
Thinking it'll be timed run sections with a minimum time for the action events.
30 min seems reasonable. 8 min miles in boots comes out to 24 min of running and 6 min to do the other 4 events. In a vacuum it seems too easy with 30 min but the heat takes the life out of you.
100% hearsay, but heard from multiple different sources that the new templated standard is gonna 32 minutes.
Beast mode
Your cardio is definitely good to be able to talk so coherently while teetering toward vomiting after 26 minutes of straight effort
Barely lol
Dont feel bad. My neighbors think im crazy. I do PT in my driveway in full kit with my helmet flipping tireds and doing tire rope pulls. Nothing makes me happier than being the guy they think is insane.
