  • In order to add an ash catcher to the Weber Jumbo Joe a little DIY elbow grease was needed. With this upgrade you have a full featured "pro" level portable charcoal grill. With this mod I would argue the Jumboe Joe is the best portable charcoal grill money alone can't buy. I hope this serves as the best camping grill for many days at the beach and in the forest to come.

    Must say, that is a Jumbo Joe mod that is probably the most outstanding addition to a tabletop kettle!
    Now if you can come up with the lid hold down for transport and add the low and slow cooking side venting like the 14 inch table top joe has. I am subscribed for future mods!

    This is the best mod I've seen and the only one of its kind obviously.
    I noticed that once installed; the ash catcher doesn't come out easily.
    5:26 The legs seem to prevent it from coming out.
    Was that actually something you had to adjust?
    If so what did you do?

    I was looking for mods for my jumbo joe. I did the pizza pan baffle plate mod. Added a thermometer. But your the only one ive seen adding an ash catcher. Instead of the brackets i just drilled holes for bolts i had laying around. The way you modded the legs made perfect sense aswell. It would have been so easy for weber to design the jumbo this way, at least come up with addons we could buy.

    Now I wanna make that, too, when I get my Jumbo Joe, but I'm a bit scared of screwing it up, since I live in Europe where it's next to impossible to get a Jumbo Joe - and it took me years to finally find a (totally overpriced) buying and shipping option. I'm particularly scared of breaking anything of the original construction (like the legs or anything). I'm not that proficient when it comes working with metal (bending and stuff)...

    Great hand tool skills. Is there a big difference between the Jumbo Joe and the one touch 18” kettle?

    • @artofthegrill9235
      @artofthegrill9235  3 роки тому +1

      I think the 18" kettle is a lot taller in addition to the legs obviously. Also, the bowl on the 18" is rounder if that makes sense. The jumbo joe has a ridge on the lower bowl. I don't have an 18" currently, so I can't compare them side-by-side. I think they grill pretty much the same and have similar cooking area.

    • @MrBritishComedy
      @MrBritishComedy 2 роки тому

      Let me answer that for you, since the author of the video unfortunately doesn't seem to be active here anymore. The basket is the Slow N' Sear Charcoal Basket (the smallest version) from Adrenaline Barbecue and the drip tray is the Mini Drip Pan from the same company.
      I wish the author of the video was still around though to give us some tips on how to bend the legs so nice and clean. I'm somewhat afraid to f*ck that up.

    are the holes for the one touch system the same between the 18" inch and the 22", just wondering because the 22" 3 blade one touch is $18 cheaper than the 18" - either way its going to get trimmed but just wondering if it would matter.

    • @artofthegrill9235
      @artofthegrill9235  3 роки тому

      I remember finding the same thing with pricing. I'm guessing the 22 would work. I was hoping the 18" was a drop-in which wasn't the case. Since you're trimming it either way the 22 may save you some dollars. If you that route reply back to let other know.

    • @artofthegrill9235
      @artofthegrill9235  3 роки тому

      I "think" the 22" would work. Since you're drilling the hole larger anyways, although I'm not 100% sure on the fit

    • @artofthegrill9235
      @artofthegrill9235  3 роки тому

      @@jrocthadino You know, it doesn't. I think if I put a seal around the rim of the lid it would, but not sure I want to go that route. For now I'm using a make shift coal pan which puts the coals out instantly and makes it safer to transport in a car etc... @@artofthegrill9235 why not just use the step drill on the original vent on the bottom, size it a bit smaller then file some notches in it for the H bracket"timing" it so it's the same as the one touch then you can still choke out the charcoal - should work in theory

    • @artofthegrill9235
      @artofthegrill9235  3 роки тому

      @@RfdAviator85 I'm not familiar with a different one touch hole shape/size for the the bottom mount. I reviewed another video where he replaces his ash catcher and you can see it's a standard circle hole as well. ua-cam.com/video/R-5lXBoHQ1o/v-deo.html The one touch (lever system) doesn't look round, but when you pull the lever it needs to be in a round hole. Maybe what you're referring to is different? I DO think I could get a flashlight out to find and close the gaps on the blades to get the coals to extinguish faster.

    Why not just attach a rod to the stock bottom vent?

    • @MrBritishComedy
      @MrBritishComedy 2 роки тому +1

      This also acts as a sweeper for the ash buildup on the bottom that tends to hamper the airflow over the course of a long cook. Plus with this type of ash catcher the ash won't fly all over the place on a windy day.
