This was painful, like watching a couple of nervous juniors play...15, 16 double faults for Zverev? Thiem too afraid to hit topspin backhands?? My goodness. Compare this to the clutch championship play of Djok, Nad, Fed, Wawrinka...not even in the same realm.
very tight & high tension final match (i watched this match many times) between these two high level players, in the fifth set tiebreak so close, Thiem after 3 times championship points finally won the match and getting his 1st gs title here in the us open 2020
It's both. But it's works for Thiem as a tactical move as well. At this point of the game, both players would be tired. Thiem knows Zverev is more nervous than him and is more error prone, as seen in his double faults. By continuously slicing and keeping the ball so low at the baseline, Thiem is forcing an already fatigued Zverev, who is 1.98m tall btw, to get down lower to strike back. This makes it more likely for Zverev to make a mistake during rallies.
I don’t know which one is more confusing, a tall strong guy like Zverev serving like Radwanska or Thiem standing far behind the baseline to return Radwanska’s serve.
I know there was no audience due to covid but they didn't have to play such a muted grandslam final tiebreak to match the venue! ... Also Djokovic must be kicking himself watching ... he would have simply demolished either of these guys if they played like this ... 5setter or not
They wouldn't have played like this. You usually play better when you face tougher opponents. You have no doubt that you need to and that helps. And don't forget Bautista Agut (correction: Carreno-Busta, thanks Sania Naqvi) was serving to win the first set when Djokovic got defaulted.
Fairly comparable with the famous 1989 French Open 1/4 final, where Lendl lost to Chang. The injury of his opponent led him to change his playing style, believing that he could wear down Chang by prolonging every rally. The strategy, as it turned out, worked against him. Here the case is basically the same, and an empty stadium also made the match seem a bit inane.
Zverev’s mental game seems to always fail him at the crucial moment. Given Thiem’s struggle at the end, this was Zverev’s championship to lose. Sure enough, he did.
