    Alec, Have you ever thought about putting a hitch on the end of the chicken tractor that will attach to the crossbar on your 3 point linkage cross bar with a simple 13mm (1/2 inch) pin? That way you can lift it off the ground enough to be able to move it around without straining your back. It would also be handy for your wife to easily move it around if you are not available to do it.

      The tractor is a bit heavy but we have used the ATV. Same idea.
      Thanks.

    Thanks, Alec, great design and set of videos. My grandfather was just like you, and thankfully, I spent a great deal of time with him learning trades and resourcefulness (if asked, I could quickly find the ball-pien in your shop ;-) but probably most importantly what I learned was that "can't, never could do anything" and that if you are willing and determined to "learn, you can know-how, to do anything." That said, at this time I do not have a welding rig nor access to one... Would you make some recommendations for places to look (ideally, order online) for the wheel housing assembly? Advanced and sincere thanks and best to you and yours way up yonder in the Great White North!

    • @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch

      Probably the easiest way to get a wheel assembly, meaning wheels and brackets all ready to bolt on, is to find a used wagon of some sort. Try Kijiji or other sale sites and look for a used garden wagon. You might just find the perfect set of wheels.
      Good luck and thanks for watching.

    I love this coop. Very good idea with the truck mat to help keep the coop clean. Do you think it would be possible to build a similar chicken tractor using PVC pipes instead of wood? Wood prices have become very high.

      Possibly! Chicken's don't care and it's whatever you have most of. Give it a try.

    Hey Alec, love your Chicken tractor. Would you be able to provide plans? I know you didn't need them, but we're stuck mid build trying to copy your design. The wheels are working very well for you, and that is so encouraging, because it's very heavy already and we don't even have the skin on it yet!

    • @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch

      All the plans are in my head sorry, and I do need it for a while longer (so my wife says).
      Just go with it and customize for your needs or hens.

      It's just an idea but, with so many people asking about the wheel assembly. Why not just show a few close-up video shots and or pictures. That way people can get a better understanding of what you did. Maybe it will help. Just an idea.

    Another easy floor covering is to get some stick down vinyl tiles. Cheap, and they will help keep moisture from the floor.

      Has anyone tried using a backer board for this? I don't know what they call it up there in Canada, but I'm talking about the cement/fiber board that you put down under ceramic tile. It looks like some of the thinner stuff would be good for this.

    Hey Alec,
    I think this is just the coop size I’m looking for. I don’t live on a ranch, but in a Monastery. And I looking at raising Bees and Chickens. So, let’s start with Chickens. Our grounds person said he would help me build a coop, but would like plans. Because I can see it in my head, but he wants something more concrete.
    I saw a couple of years ago what you typed out to LaPlam, but was wondering if you have blueprints that would help us. You said it was less than 300 dollars.... was it really that much?

    • @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch
      @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch  4 роки тому +1

      A coop similar to mine from TSC costs about $1200. I figured $300 was pretty good.
      I'm like you. I have a picture in my mind of what I want and I start to build. The finished project usually resembles my mental picture somewhat.

    Do you have any predators that want to go under the run? Some people lower the unit after they move it.

    • @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch
      @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch  6 років тому +3

      We have foxes, coyotes, skunks, raccoons and weasels but haven't lost any yet.
      The screen goes right to the ground.
      You could put a 1 X 6 board along the bottom edge.
      Or fasten chicken wire across the bottom on the ground so it will lift and move with the whole unit.
      I was trying to keep it easy to move and so the chickens were right on the ground and we've been lucky so far.
      I also use 3 Nite Guard lights. These are a bright red LED light that comes on at night only and blinks - niteguard.com .
      It is supposed to keep predators away. Maybe that's why we've been lucky. You can buy them on-line.

    Do you winter your hens in the tractor?

    • @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch
      @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch  6 років тому +3

      Yes. We wrap the coop in a tarp or plastic and seal up any gaps to protect them from the wind and snow. The waterer has a heater so it doesn't freeze and then we put a 60 watt light bulb inside the coop. Make sure it won't burn the chickens or the coop but the heat will help keep it a bit warm. The light is also needed because the chickens won't lay unless they have 10 - 12 hours of light every day. Just put it on a timer to come on early in the morning and then shut off but come on again at dark for a couple of hours. The chickens lay and it helps them keep warm.

    Hi Alec, do you think this chicken coop model of yours would see the chickens through a Canadian winter of -10 to sometimes -25? I like the build and considering a similar build.

    • @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch
      @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch  4 роки тому +3

      This will be our 3rd winter. No problem.
      I insulated the actual coop (box) with some flexible aluminum-wrapped insulation, and I put a 60 watt bulb in it attached to a ThermoCube so it only comes on when the temp drops to 10F. And we moved the whole thing into the barn so it's out of the direct wind and snow.
      8 eggs a day, every day. No problem.

    How often do you move the tractor in winter if at all?

    • @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch
      @AlecPeirceAtTheRanch  Рік тому

      In winter, all the birds live free in and around the barn. The tractor is inside with its heater and timer, see #145 for my battery blanket chicken heater. They love the heat and lay just as many eggs in winter as summer.
