  • My FIRST 💯 mile #ultramarathon - the Uwharrie 100 - took me 35 hours 38 min and 10 years of dedicating myself to this sport of long distance #running. This was the toughest thing I've ever attempted in all of my #trailrunning endeavors, but it was also the most rewarding and incredible experience.
The #Uwharrie 100 is one of the most challenging 100's on the east coast. The course traverses 102.5 miles through some of the oldest #mountains in the entire country, and is an unrelenting journey consisting of 100% #singletrack #trails filled with rocks, roots, stream crossings and grueling climbs/descents. Some of these rightfully named "Soul Crusher Climb" and "Hallucination Hill" will test anyone's mental and physical limits as you circumnavigate the 20.5-mile course FIVE times.
Please join me in my journey to #100miles and see how the event played out from my perspective and if you enjoyed the video please like and #subscribe and share with anyone you think would enjoy it as well. I've got a lot of upcoming projects and I'd love to have you on board.

Really amazing video and accomplishment. The run at the end....WOW. The average person who stubbles on to this video can't even fathom a fraction of how hard what you did is to complete. Really outstanding effort bud! Congrats. I want to call out the guy at around 27 minutes. You came in and you sat on the wet chair and things were not looking amazing and you were going down a bad path (as everyone would in that spot). Most people will follow another person down the misery loves company path but that dude snapped you out of it. "Well on the positive, you are ahead of pace, etc." In that moment that is exactly what was needed and ne nailed it. His voice wasn't wavering or giving you an inch of self doubt. Just the way he talked and presented himself in those moments were amazing. Our crew have no idea how much they can impact our mental state which intern dictates our race. Very well done!!

Thank you so much for this amazing comment. I fought with literally everything I had at the end there, after 100+ miles and over 35 hours of racing so far. The last 2-2.5mi I ran at an average of 13:00/mi which were my fastest the entire race. Literally sprinting through the woods with a complete disregard to the pain.
My crew/pacers/support and friends were essential to my finish. I was so fortunate to have such energy backing me up the entire race. THATS why I finished.

@@ScottRunsnStuff maybe 2024, not sure if I want to stay up all night, thanks for the inspiration Scott,

    • @ScottRunsnStuff
      @ScottRunsnStuff  Рік тому

I wouldn’t think of it as ‘wanting or not wanting to stay up the entire night’ but instead breaking it up into pieces. Since this was 5x20 mi it was “just a loop and a half in the dark.” Obviously this race was a bit crazy for a first (35.5h) but easier courses you can get done 10+ hours faster, and if it starts early enough you may even finish pretty early into the next day.
Maybe I’ll make a video sometime on the topic of nighttime running and how your strategy changes. Thanks for giving me an idea! But I’m pretty back-logged with videos I want to make (I’ve got two new race videos coming soon) among several others. Best of luck with your running endeavors!

I’m an Ultra running athlete also! I really enjoyed your video, congratulations on your first 100 mile ultramarathon!!! I found myself screaming and yelling, yea!! Woohoo!!! and even crying when you came into the finish line…I love my Ultrarunning community so much!!! I’ve ran 4 100 mile trail races so far, my first one I actually won 1st female and 4th overall, I was shocked and so was everyone else that knew me and what I’d been through, that was in 2015 the first year I started running ultras, I was in a high speed head on collision due to a drunk driver in 2011 and couldn’t run for 3 yrs and although I’ve been a runner all of my life, I’d never ran ultra distances before, I’ve been in love with ultras now!
I just attempted Rio Del Lago 100 M on November 5th, 2022 and unfortunately had to DNF at mile 44.6 due to major fatigue and breathing issues starting, happened last year also, it’s due to my autoimmune disease, Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, it’s caused me muscle, ligament and tendon issues, along with lung and heart issues. I had a major flare up in 2017 and I’ve been fighting flare up issues since. Then I got a Covid shot October 2021, again major flare up that I’m still fighting, but you know what, if I have to fight to continue what I love then I’ll keep my boxing gloves are on! Long, sorry…lol
Now I’m training for Cool Moon 100M in June, 2023, better training this time, I’m feeling better! 💗🥳

Wow Tina thank you so much for this comment! Sorry about your accident and other setbacks but is seems you have the right outlook and still fight every day to be your best.
There’s something so special about ultrarunning, and 100’s in specific. It’s not just a race but an entire journey through all sorts of weather, conditions, highs, lows, excitement, pain and reward. It’s almost comparable to an entire chapter of one’s life summed up in a single event, but one that spans months of training to prepare for.
Sprinting into that finish line was so incredible; everything was hurting but none of it mattered for those few moments. I was overcome with emotion.
I’m actually already signed up for my next 100 in April of next year. Im excited to tackle buckle #2 but know that with these events the finish line is never guaranteed.
Best of luck in your endeavors as well.

My longest run was 56 miles before this 100 so if you’ve done a few 50’s completing a 100k isn’t necessarily a requirement. It was daunting going from ~50 up to 100 but I’d say just go for it because you’ll never know what you can and can’t do until you try. I haven’t ever run 100k but it’s not that much different then 50 (think only like 4-5hrs more depending on the course). Going straight to the 100 makes it that much more special. Best of luck with everything and thanks a bunch for the sub!

Thanks for the encouragement. It’s a treat seeing all your different videos (skiing , climbing). Well rounded.
The mental part I’m good. My knees are what really slowed me down. Not injured, just my patella‘s were toast. Hoping to do some strength training and mileage to help with that. See you on a future trail!

Great video and epic achievement, Scott! I've known about this race for a while and it's fairly local to me but I haven't even visited the course, so it was really cool seeing so much of the event. Thanks for sharing your experience and huge congratulations on the feat of running 100 miles!

Thank you! This race is exceptionally hard since it’s nearly 100% on rocky technical single-track. There’s not hardly anywhere you can make up time. I’m not sure if you’re aware but there’s the Uwharrie (URE) marathon every year that’s free to sign up, as well as monthly supported training runs between March-October that are open to anyone (running this race or not).
I’ve got a few other videos about the marathon race and training runs if you’re wanting to see some more of the course. You should come out to one of them sometime! Great group of people.
      Thanks again for watching!

Congratulations, sir! I’ve only been running for a few months and will be competing in my longest race so far - a 12K - next weekend. I have lots of work to do before I can think about a 100 miler but I was inspired by this video. It’s people like you that motivate me to keep pushing myself past my perceived limits to see what my body and mind can really do.

Thanks Craig. Believe me when I say this, when I was contemplating signing up for this, it was beyond scary - like someone asking you ‘hey wanna run a marathon with me next weekend?’ It seemed impossible.
I’ve got a lot of new content coming soon, but one of which I’m super excited about is “My Running Journey, from 5k to 100-miler.”
You might find that particularly enjoyable, since I still remember exactly when I was where you are, and I’m sure you’d love my advice to my former self.

@@ScottRunsnStuff My 12K over Veteran's Day weekend went better than expected. I planned for a very cautious 11:30/mile but finished feeling strong while averaging 10:30/mile. Last weekend I learned a valuable lesson about NOT ignoring nagging little injuries. In the pursuit of a 5K PR - which I did get - I blew out my left hip flexor about 50ft from the finish. I felt/heard a loud pop and I was done. It's a week later now and I'm slowly healing but I'm not sure how much longer till I can run again. My main focus will now be introducing strength and mobility training into my schedule to help stay injury free in the future. I'm going to watch your 5k-100miler video later today. I'm just trying to stay motivated until I can train again. Thanks for putting out these videos!
