Update: I've driven the car at two different tracks now with the new CAE shifter installed. This shifter is undoubtedly doing a great job of ensuring I get the gear I want. I definitely don't get stuck in the reverse gate no-mans-land. 4-5 and 5-6 shifts are significantly better. It has also highlighted the fact that 3rd gear synchros are pretty sad, so I need to be gentle when trying to shift to 3rd. Otherwise, I'm happy with the upgrade and the value the shifter brings, albeit yes the cost is pretty extreme.
I'm spending a lot of time sharing the car with newbies now, so I've done a turboectomy and gone back to a 5 speed and a standard clutch with just a few breathing improvements and an ME442 ECU. This enables the newbies to concentrate on aiming the car rather than on looking down at the random standard 6 speed gearshifter. Surprisingly I'm enjoying the car in this form even more than BARMY. This one is maybe 160hp with a mega chassis and brakes, whereas BARMY was more than double the power with street suspension. The 160hp car runs on fairly ordinary 195s and it's great to see the newbies getting it rotating by around lunchtime.
man this is rad brotha , closest thing i have seen to a actual Gated shifter specially for a miata trans ... hellz yeah brotha peace n love keep it rad stay safe and build on ...l8z #RaceCarForTheDaily
I thought about the CAE, but after many Subaru people owning them and getting a good look in person I opted to go with the GRacing simply because it is simplistic. The CAE has a lot of adjustments and whatnot which I didn’t want to have to deal with. But overall I believe both to be very quality products.
Not to mention the GRacing is circa half the price. The adjust-ability of the CAE makes it look bulky, but it's one of the reasons it caught my eye. I think it still stands that for a road car it's not so logical, but for my needs it's makes much more sense.
@@Bbeavis I was still shocked at the cost of the GRacing as well, but I can also say when I put it in I thought… oh man I’m not going to like this. But after having it on track and even on the street it is great. One thing about the CAE is man the install looked rough compared to the Gracing. But nothing too crazy overall. Nothing like my mustang which is just done right crazy.
Firstly, nice shirt! Secondly, what a beautiful piece of hardware! I thought to myself, ah, probably a shifter from a local seller, but no, it’s from the country right next to mine 😮 If I ever go the racecar route with my Miata, I’ll definitely get this one. Great vid Brandon!
@@Bbeavis the new gt3's are getting really nice, but if they ever go double wishbone/multilink on a gt4 i might just end up homeless sleeping in a racecar.
Looks freaking awesome! Saved this walkthrough for whenever I’m ready to upgrade. Running the IRP shifter and love the feel but can’t stand the constant buzzing sometimes. Have been debating if it’s worth the change.
@@Bbeavis absolutely agree with you there. I’m still fairly a novice with seat time but it makes sense the issue you’d have with the serious track work you do and at that power level.
@@Bbeavis Nice. For our NA / 3uz build currently in progress and the same seat we went 30mm into the tunnel and 30mm down. I struggled (at 6.0' and 110 kg's) with the position on the std floor. Your cars looking and running like a beast, still can't believe you've managed to keep the 6 speed at that power level, well done!!.
First Thanks for including a review after usage in the same vid, great for us internet folk experiencing the world through a screen and expecting everything to be just a click away. Do hope for a more thorough review after more time though, as this is something ive considered but im really stuck on just because it makes sense on paper doenst mean itll make sense in reality. So like i said, really hoping for some words on how its affected shifting overall for you.
I pinned a comment to this video a little while back to update, to paraphrase myself: I've had the car out a few times now and this shifter is undoubtedly doing a great job of ensuring I get the gear I want and prevents hitting reverse gate when going for 6th. That said, meantime the gearbox finally failed (long time coming for a track car with 300hp) and I had it rebuilt. The refreshed box is amazing and smooth (with this shifter) - but the shifter isn't the reason for that... the shifter is there mainly to get clean shifts and avoid reverse gate. So, I'm happy with the upgrade and the benefit the shifter brings, albeit yes the cost is pretty extreme.
I heavily gutted the doors, and then made flat carbon panels for the door cards. I have a video of making them: ua-cam.com/video/ZL8invUf53Q/v-deo.html
Hi Beavis, I want to run a CAE but I’m currently on a 5 Spd, I have another one ready in my garage so I want to stay on 5 Spd. for now. Do you think it’s worth it to install one on this trans ? Regards!
As he alluded to in the video, is it "worth it" for you at all? Is it solving a problem you actively want to solve? Then, are you planning to stay 5spd forever? If so, it doesnt matter what trans you have, if its worth it, its worth it. Finally, of you are planning on swapping to a dif trans in the future, hows money for you? If it solves a problem, and its an easy purchase for you financially, of its worth it once, its worth it twice, but im on a tight budget, so im sinking no money into my engine i plan on eventually swapping, i cant afford to make power twice, so im gunna live with what ive got until i can do it once and never touch it again.
Felix, as noncog touched on, I more or less addressed this in the video - that is to say, it's up to you. I don't know your circumstances or use case, I don't know what your budget is or how you drive your car. I've provided as much information as I can, for you to decide for yourself if this shifter works for you. There's certainly a reason why I've not used any other short shifters products on my car before this one.. none of the others offered what this one did for my needs.
I’m sorry my question was not precise enough. I’m 100% certain that I want to run a short shifter and that I want to run the CAE I’m just unsure if it’s with it on a 5 Spd Trans that can’t even handle power
@@slwbys are you planning on upgrading the trans any time soon? Are you making enough power that with poly dif bushings and awr/v8 roadsters/blackbird fab worx/the company that said the engine making too much power was the reason the bushings failed style motor mounts your shifting is still sloppy? Would a trans mount be a better option for you? How often are you blowing through a trans? Would you be just as happy with a miataroadster short shifter? If you plan on just swapping 5 speeds all the time swapping this shifter over would be the easy part of the job, its not like you cant transfer it when you do the trans swap. Do you track your car, do you need mechanical limits on a shifter? Are your dif bushings and motor mounts already sorted?
@@slwbys If you're 5spd is all original, and you havent already spent money making it better, and you're over 150-200whp, then perhaps grab yourself a 6spd first.
High, got any more updates on that shifter performance. I'm really sick of that 4-5 & 5-6 (which can become 5-4 and very problematic) change on the 6speed. I understand that the internals of the 6spd are pretty "mickey-mouse" and difficult to change, so doing it externally seems to be the only solution. Cheers.

A quick question, did you have to cut the floor to fit the OMP seat? (and what seat is it?)
