Watched this to decide whether or not to buy one of his books. I have to say I get the sense that he is a great contrast to Heiser in that I think he can give us a more balanced perspective on what Heiser says. He seems to point out the need to consider more deeply the questions on each issue and not jump to conclusions too quickly. And I don't think he digresses to much from Heiser, yet he doesn't seem to want to formulate a whole worldview, and clearly intends to look at things purely through Old Testament eyes purposefully. Good point, I'm pretty sure Dr. Walton would agree something was wrong, the introduction of chaos. I believe Dr. Walton is suggesting there is purpose of evil and the devil, as a function to Gods will or plan.
Revelation 12:9 clearly calls the serpent both Satin and the Devil. I can't accept cultural river differences when the Bible explicitly makes a claim. Even when my pastor says something in a sermon I always check out what the Bible actually say if it's suspect. Paul commanded us to verify even what he taught, how much more so those who today who speak on behalf of God and what God meant and said to us.

This is a logical way of reading the Bible. A lot makes sense. We benefit from cleansing the text of layers and layers of later cultural contexts and interpretations. Or, more correct, the text benefits from that kind of reading. - But the way Dr Walton reads it, is it a way of denying evil? A clever way of saying that the devil exists but is not a problem? - That WE are the problem? And that because we are the problem, WE can and must DO something about it? Isn't that judaism? Why did Jesus have to come and die for our sins if we can fix them ourselves?? Where is the talk of MERCY? Of Jesus buying us back from Satan? Everyday life experiences show me that in me and the rest of the creation there is a strong evil force. A force that wants me to ignore it and not engage in any talk of it having some power over me that I need Gods help to get free of? God IS souverein! But over what- if Satan or demons doesn't effect us nor God? The Devil(= the power of sin) is no threat to God himself, there I agree with Dr Walton. But he is a huge threat to us, Gods created and fully loved children. Of course God fights a war for every single soul! The wars in the old testament were pure spiritual wars executed through earthly armies. Just one example of many. The guy with the black vest and red shirt was very arrogant; not taking any notes( a “you can’t teach me anything” attitude),but constantly challenging the teacher demonstrates his narcissism. Every church has people like this, just make sure you’re not that guy! 😂
This lecture seems to contradict the New Testament, especially Jude about the Nephilim and Revelation about the serpent. Cultural river or no cultural river the Bible clearly teaches the Nephilim came about because of the sin of some angels; and the serpent is equal to the Devil, Satin, and the Dragon. (Jude verse 6 and Revelation 12:9)
He addresses these points. Specifically about the serpent being Satan, he says that Revelation is using the serpent imagery as a conflation, not a 1:1 correlation / identification. Usually in Revelation, Satan is a dragon, not a snake. So it would be like referring to someone today as Hitler. You're not saying Hitler was that person, but you're building an Identity and conflating the badness that was in Hitler with this person.
@@luthlexor123 I agree that the Dragon must mean Satan as his appearance is in context with the virgin birth and fleeing to Egypt which appears to refer to Christ's first appearing on Earth. The 3 1/2 weeks (half of a 7 day week - 7 being a Hebrew symbol of completion) seems to indicate that Christ completed half his mission on the cross with his resurrection and ascension. The fullness of fulfillment would then be when Christ returns to Judge the Earth (ergo completing the week and Christ's whole mission). Anyway that was the best I could come up considering Revelation as a whole. I wouldn't mind some feedback.

28:49 Satan is referred to as the dragon AND the serpent of old that was cast out. A 60 year old lay minister shouldn't have to correct a theologian
